Update #20 - New pledge upgrades and support banners

Hi everyone,

Not long until Christmas and I hope everyone has bought their Elite: Dangerous Christmas gifts. What better present for a loved one - or yourself, than the promise of this great game?  :-)

As I write this we are currently over £903,000 pledged and with 17,480 backers. This is great news and thank you to all our backers. We're not safe yet, so please make sure to keep up the good work and keep spreading the word. With more backers we can feel more secure in achieving the £1,250,000 goal to get this game made.

This game has to be made - if only so I can play it!

Today we're adding some new pledge upgrades and also changing the minimum pledge level needed to qualify to add upgrades. Rather than £40, you only need to be at the £30 tier or higher to add pledge upgrades.

Here are the new upgrades, note they are digital download only so you don't have any shipping charge (unless you order and physical upgrades as well):

+£5 Have a digital copy of the official sequel to “The Dark Wheel” (Delivery March 2014)
+£5 Have a digital copy of the Elite: Dangerous soundtrack (Delivery March 2014)
+£5 Pick one of the ship decals, at least 10 will be available, they can be used as the decal to access the Founders' World (Delivery March 2014)

We've also received requests for banners that supporters can use as forum signatures and similar. I've included these below:

I'd also like to shout out about "Survivor" by Nathanael Page. He's one of our Elite: Dangerous authors and is planning something a little different with his writer's pack. He's planning to make a gamebook, as a fan of gamebooks from my youth I'd love to see what he does with the Elite universe.

Visit the link and help support his book and with it the game:

Once again, thanks to all of our backers - old, new and yet to be!

Doctor Doom likes this update.

Frontier Developments say "We can't change the pledge reward descriptions."

Take a good look at the Star Citizen Kickstarter page. There are ways around that limitation...

    3. Peter Richard Brooks on December 24, 2012

Will the artwork for the decals be available, even if only in draft by the end of the Kickstarter?

    4. Atilla on December 24, 2012

@Jason, I agree... At 20 I would have been tempted to add the 5 for a soundtrack, but now it's forced to be 15 for the early birds and I'm just not going to do that. The 12 for the Eagle Mk II maybe, but it's holidays season innit... ah well. It's not like they're just going to allow 20 tier after the fact since maybe 100-200 people have already switched to a higher tier already, would be unfair to them.

However Steve, point taken - I would love it if more of the existing £20 pledgers would increase theirs too!! As one person has said at some point, if all current pledgers increased by £5, that would be a massive help, as this project may not go ahead due to not quite reaching the required level on time.

Jason Frost on December 24, 2012

Not quite true, I was a £20 pledger at one point and I viewed it as the first 10,000 got the game at a cheaper rate as an early-bird service. However, I was very much tempted to increase but especially considering some of the other pledge-points that have been added very recently, I have increased my bid quite significantly. In part this was a bid in my part to have an influence in the game as a whole, and that the Kickstarter time limit is getting ever nearer and I want this game to be made!! My vacancy of one of the £20 slots will hopefully entice a new pledger to take my position (and hopefully not someone downgrading from £30 to £20!!!) and help fund this much awaited sequel.

The fact that there were no vacancies at the £20 level and now, at the current time of writing, there are a fair few, it would suggest that there are people who have done a very similiar thing.

    7. Bromley86 on December 24, 2012

Yes, but what is the actual logic behind that? The only thing that makes any sense is that the £20 tier was regarded as a bargain-basement level and those wanting to fully participate would have to pay £30+ (actually, £40+ originally).

That's plainly nonsense now though, as (a) there are clearly thousands of people who will not move from £20 except perhaps by adding £5 for The Dark Wheel/music/decals/etc and the project needs every pledge it can get and (c) the old tier structure wasn't cutting it and has been superseded now with the inclusion of the ship tiers.

    8. intrepidis on December 24, 2012

@KikahaJones: I believe the rationale is that if you want a £5 pledge upgrade you have pledge £35, rather than £10.

    9. Bromley86 on December 24, 2012

@KJ. Very good point. The new ship tiers means that if someone is camping at £20 then they're unlikely to increase their pledge just to access the pledge upgrades. And if someone who hasn't pledge £20+ wants a decal, why stop them? :)

      KikahaJones on December 23, 2012

By my count, you have over 10,000 backers below the £30 level. What is the rationale for not allowing them to pick up a pledge upgrade if they want to do so? If someone wants a copy of the game + a sound track, for example, why don't you want the extra money?

    11. Ty Corcoran on December 23, 2012

It would be useful but I've put a banner on my facebook profile anyway.

    12. Fredrik Forsell on December 23, 2012

There should be a banner to set as your Facebook cover. These don't work well as they're not the correct aspect ratio/resolution

    13. Deliverence on December 23, 2012

      Thanks Michael appreciated

    14. Creator Frontier Developments on December 23, 2012

      @ Scott Winser

The extra decals aren't needed to access the Founders system, that is included as long as you have pledged £5 or more. To add a pledge upgrade increase the value of your pledge to allow for the value of the upgrades (don't forget to include shipping if needed). You can find more information in the FAQ and the pledge upgrades section of the main kickstarter page.

    15. Deliverence on December 23, 2012

This is confusing I thought all pledgers got access to the "Founders World" or do I have to add another $5 Decal? If I need to add this do i simply just add an additional $5 to the pledge amount I don't see an option to select.

    16. AbueloNemesis on December 23, 2012

Thanks! needed the banners, now I'm going to spread the word better in the forums.

    17. Atilla on December 23, 2012

Oh, I didn't see the other ship on the list but it's on a tier, well that's definitely a bit more interesting than another decal. :) Maybe after the end of the month...

    18. Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 23, 2012

@Atilla - The extra £12 would give you an Eagle Mk II with 1,000 Credits

    19. Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 23, 2012

@Atilla, I see your point and can sympathize with the frustration at the corporates who effect exchange rate profiteering. I personally don't think that is the case with Kickstarter projects, the currency of pledges is set when the kickstarter project is created. Star Citizen is being created on the US - so their Kickstarter is US $, frontier are uk based so their Kickstarter is £

    20. Atilla on December 23, 2012

@Tom, well if I remember correctly both were there from the start, the 30 was not added later. They also replied below with "The £20 tier is an early bird bonus, the £30 tier is the normal one for the game". So seems to me the 30 was already there. And upgrading would mean £15 from the early bird tier, which is close to €20, tbh a bit much for just a skin or soundtrack so I'm gonna stay on my early bird tier. When upgrades are supposed to get you to give just a little more, this is just not the way to do it imho. But kudos for anyone who is able and upgrading, you'll be helping getting the game made which we're all looking forward to.

    21. Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 23, 2012

@Steve, the mythical dredger could well have been some creative imagineering ;-)

    22. Atilla on December 23, 2012

Doh.. that was supposed to be £20 (€25) and £30 (€38) in my previous comment, not £30 and £40. And don't get me wrong, I do want this game to happen. I just wonder if the higher prices is what is keeping a lot of potential backers from backing. I've seen the same thing on PlayStation stores, where $20 is often just copied to UK and other EU stores as £20 or €20, but it's just making gamers angry. It may be different here, but $30 is like £19 / €23 so in comparison prices are way up already.

    23. Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 23, 2012

@atilla, the £30 tier was created when the maximum takeup of the £20 tier was reached, it seems only fair to me to give those who are pledging more money, a bigger/better reward. If you look at the £20 tier, lots of people have upped their pledges to move to a more rewarding tier, the extra £12 seems to be a small price to pay for the additional reward - just my opinion for what it's worth

    24. Atilla on December 23, 2012

The £20 tier is the early bird bonus, but it's supposed to be the same as the £30 tier. I think it's weird to say no only £30 and up get to upgrade, thanks for being in early but no upgrades for you. Well, then okay, no upgrades for me. £30 is already €38, and £40 is €49, that's basically retail price already, of a packaged game, not digital. Just saying it's already double the amount for the base game than similar games on kickstarter using dollars, like that other space sim. But now even if you got in early you have to bump it up? =/

    25. Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 23, 2012

@Peter - I'll do my best of an overview of the original Elite -
All players started their experience with a Cobra Mk III, and a single pulse laser, in game money (credits) were made by buying goods at a low price - usually food from an agricultural planet, selling it for a profit at an industrial world, buying robots and computers from the industrial world and selling them to the agricultural world. Rinse and repeat until you had enough money to buy a better laser cannon, bigger cargo bay, missiles etc.
Once my Cobra was modded to handle itself in a battle with pirates, I'd jump to an anarchy system - no police, no laws, just a shed load of pirates and bandits, they'd be wanted by the law and a bounty would be payable when they were destroyed, so a spot of bounty hunting would result in lots of dead pirates and lots on additional cash. The space stations in these anarchy systems would sell illegal goods at low prices, lots of money could be made by selling them - the risk being if you got caught you'd be classed as an Outlaw. There was a chance the cops would try to intercept you if you we're an outlaw. Getting caught multiple times would guarantee that a swarm of cops would open up on you, when you approached a space station in a law abiding system. There was a chance that when you engaged your hyperdrive, it would malfunction, and you'd enter 'Witch space' a ruthless alien race inhabited this area - 'Thargoids', they had massive Octagon mother ships and were intent on destroying all humanity.........

    26. Bromley86 on December 23, 2012

@Tom. From the FAQs on Ian Bell's Elite website:
      Q. Where are the Space Dredgers and Generation Ships?
      A. Where indeed.

Seems they might not have made the cut.

    27. Bromley86 on December 23, 2012

@Flemming. The decals are different. As a £45 pledger, you get access to the £5 tier backer's decal. This decal allows you to travel to the secret system.

The decals above also allow travel to the secret system, but there are 10+ to choose from.

    28. Creator Frontier Developments on December 23, 2012

      @ Tom OConnell

Maybe, but blue flashing lights aren't as effective in deep space as you might think :-)

And I don't think anyone spotted a dredger.

    29. Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 23, 2012

There was always a rumour of a gigantic Dredger ship in Elite, did anyone ever see it ?

    30. Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 23, 2012

@Michael, will there be blue flashing lights on the police vipers ?

      @ Peter Baltzer Hansen

What do you want to know?

    32. Paul B on December 23, 2012

      These are upgrades.

If you're unfamiliar with Kickstarter it works like this: You pledge an amount (ie £40) and select a reward (the £40 tier), if you elect to pay a higher pledge (ie £50) than the reward tier you select, you'll be sent an email after the KS has (successfully) finished asking you what you want the difference (£10) to be used for. You can then say nothing, or ask for things from the upgrades tier, this is where the things listed above come in, plus other stuff listed on the pledging page for this kickstarter.

    33. fistynuts on December 23, 2012

Honestly, this is confusing as hell.

Hi @Michael. The banners look great, how about some square shaped icons for Twitter badges?

    38. Creator Frontier Developments on December 23, 2012

      @ Fiachra Mac Aodha

The first decal is the same for everyone. The pledge upgrade decals are different and you can choose one for each £5 you add as per the pledge upgrades.

@Michael Fair enough, but that's kinda what Raptr is about. Gaming, talking about gaming, gaming news, tracking gaming, and it's not going to hurt us if some of us actually start using Raptr to track our gaming activity, represent ourselves as gamers, define, discover, & share our Gamer DNA. That's what Raptr is all about. If it were another site it wouldn't be appropriate, but for Raptr, that's kinda the focus.

    40. Serena Nelson - Hero of the AGRM on December 23, 2012

@Fiachra: The problem is that I need to pledge at least 30, but I'm at 20 right now. I can't go for any of the add-ons unless I do so...which I don't want to.

    41. Fiachra Mac Aodha on December 23, 2012

@Serena Nelson I maybe wrong but my interpretation of the update was that you just add on an extra £5 to your pledge amount to get the soundtrack, you do not have to change your tier.

    42. Micael Pochat on December 23, 2012

      @ Frontier Developments

Was afraid (for my wallet) that you are going to say that.

I guess I'll just have to take a plunge and pledge £40 then. Guess it helps get you a bit closer :).

    43. Phil Hibbs on December 23, 2012

Those narrow banners look like "ELITE F BACKER"

    44. Serena Nelson - Hero of the AGRM on December 23, 2012

As a fan of soundtracks, I would have been willing to drop an extra £5 for it as an add-on no problem, but I don't want to move up from my early bird tier. I fully understand where you guys are coming from with the £30 minimum, but it still sucks.

    45. Fiachra Mac Aodha on December 23, 2012

I have a question about the decals, the lowest pledge of £5 gets you a backers decal for the game (and thereby all levels above) but in the addons you state that you can add £5 and choose from a number of decals, does this mean the add on allows you to choose which decal you want whereas it would otherwise be random or are they different types of decals altogether. Does the decals we receive for being a backer grant us entry into the founders system as well? Just looking to clarify the situation.

Like the banners already using one as my MWO sig.

This isn't a good idea, only upvote things if you're part of the community, we're getting some moderator heat for people doing this on Reddit.

Actually Michael you would have to be part of the Raptr community in order to post or upvote there. Which is how I posted about ED earlier. Been a member there for 2 years already. :)

So anyone of us going there to spread the word would have become a member first.
