Update #16 - Teaser video and a call to arms!

Hi everyone,

Michael here with a big update!

Thank you to Chris Roberts for giving us a shout out in his latest Star Citizen update. The Elite: Dangerous Kickstarter is now sitting at over £810,000 and we have over 16,500 backers.

This is good, but we still have ~£450,000 to go, and just 16 days to do it in – we need your help now and over the Holidays!

We need to spread the word far and wide. We’ll of course be doing that as well, and thank you to those who have already been doing it, but we now need a big push from as many people as possible to try and make sure we hit the Kickstarter total and get to make this game.

Tell everyone you can as you see them over the Holidays; tell your colleagues, tell your friends, tell your family. Everybody, try to recruit 5 fresh pledgers.

If you are on Twitter, tweet about the Kickstarter (include the #EliteDangerous hashtag) and ask your followers to re-tweet.

If you’re on Facebook, update your wall and those of all your friends who’ll be interested.

If you’re on Google +1, publically recommend the project.

If you’re on Linked In, share the news about the project.

If you blog, or are part of any online communities, post about the game.

You get the picture... any way you can spread the word, please do so.

People can learn more about the project, gets links to and pledge via either the Kickstarter campaign or directly via PayPal from our website here:

To help with the push we have a new teaser movie about the great game we want to make:

You can also help by supporting the novels looking to make the writer’s pledge. Each of these is another £4,500 towards the Elite: Dangerous Kickstarter. T James is intending to write a novel called ‘Out of the Darkness’. You can pledge to his book here:

Thanks again to you all for your continued support.

Enjoy the video and then, let’s spread the word!

      Can I buy that music?

    3. Peter Mattsson on December 20, 2012

There was a nebula visible in the second scene of the teaser.... I really hope it is really there so you can fly to it. I hate backdrops in this kind of games. All visible objects should be reachable. Every star in the background should be based to reachable stars in the game... and so on....

    4. Bromley86 on December 20, 2012

Of course, that was a finished product with reviews.

    5. Humbo [Founding Member] on December 20, 2012

@nathan the original BBC Elite was 14.95 in 1984 - equivalent to 37.82 GBP in 2012, so 30 is still a bargain :-)

    6. Brodie on December 20, 2012

I cant stop watching that trailer, the addition of those 5 tones from the Blue Danube right at the very very end gives me goosebumps!

    7. Nathan Moro on December 20, 2012

30 pounds is now minimum entry price for the game? You have bucklies chance of making it.

    8. Andre Czausov on December 20, 2012

Great video - and as others have pointed out - should have been the starting one back in December.
NB, CHECK THE HYPERLINK @ THE END OF VIDEO : there should be a 'G' in DanGerous ;-)

    9. Kevin Gilmartin on December 20, 2012

I've pledged as much as I can afford at £150 (most expensive video game I've ever bought, if you don't count a 2-year Eve Online habit [reformed]), but I'll do my bit to spread the word.

Given all the work that's gone into the game already, if the Kickstarter doesn't hit target (God forbid) will it just be abandoned?

Posted on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ - plus I have updated my pledge to £150. This games *has* to happen :)

    11. Heiko on December 20, 2012

Great teaser! That's the way this whole campaign should have started. Never would it have been necessary to literally beg for pledges now with something like this to kick of this kickstarter. But sadly the damage is done.

    12. Bromley86 on December 20, 2012

      >>>What about the Paypal ones ? Will the payment be delayed or will you have to refund hundreds or thousands people ?

Frontier have confirmed it'll be refunded. They've not updated the PP page to reflect it; if/when they do, you're right about the need to emphasise KS>PP. Wouldn't hurt to trim back the existing sales pitch and just link back to the ED webpage, which has shaped up nicely.

    13. Commander Halley on December 19, 2012

I'd have considered jumping from 20 to 90 if I also gained alpha and beta access, but to withhold access to testers until we pay more was sheer lunacy. David should backpedal, the goal would have been achieved already.

    14. Maalak on December 19, 2012

"The PayPal option is for the people that cannot contribute through Kickstarter for whatever reason."

The KS payment will be only done if the 1,25M£ goal is reaached.
What about the Paypal ones ? Will the payment be delayed or will you have to refund hundreds or thousands people ?

You should also be more strict about the fact that pledging in KS instead of Paypal is far more important so the pledge will be counted in the total in order to reach the objective.

And I still want an artwork of the imperial courrier, but that's another story. :p

    15. Walt Newhouse on December 19, 2012

Great video guys. Nice Dabube horns. Upping pledge. Spreading the word.

    16. Dung Beetle (Tim Gayda) on December 19, 2012

Excellent video! Thanks for that, this is exactly what we've been asking for, and you've delivered. Keep these updates coming... :-D

    17. Pēteris Krišjānis on December 19, 2012

      @Dan Eltis @Brodie that's already done :)

    18. Dan Eltis on December 19, 2012

This is the video that should be at the top of the kickstarter page. Awesome :)

    19. Richard Harrison on December 19, 2012

A TEASER in every sense of the word - a lapdance at Spearmint Rhino's doesn't even come close! NERDGASM! :-D

... Can you tell I'm happy with the latest update? Hope I got that across, Michael.

Now THAT'S the movie you should have kicked off this Kickstarter with.
you need this as the first vid on the main page.

I agree with many that say there should be something worth the money between 20 and 50. 50 is way too much for me, but i might consider raising to 30 if there was some incentive.

One thing that i don't like about this update is that Michael says it's a "big update".... and then only talks about how the project needs more backers.
The video is nice, but pretty far from being something big.
All in all I'm a bit dissappointed :(

    23. Laszlo Horvath [ £85 @ E:D ] on December 19, 2012

i doubled my pledge from 20£ to 50£
the game must to be a gorgeous part of the history!

    24. Donovan on December 19, 2012

Great update. Splice that video in front of the homepage video and it'll be even more powerful.

    25. Laszlo Horvath [ £85 @ E:D ] on December 19, 2012

yes, but we dont let fail this project peoples isn't it???
there is somebody like me, he waited since 30 years ago for this masterpeace.

      please gain the pledge with
      "1. Digital Download of Music Add-on - £5
      2. Download digital copy of "The Dark Wheel" sequel Add-on - £5"

average we need about ~ 20 £/backer, to reach the goal.
      we can not fail!

Like a lot of people, I would be happy to add a few more pounds to my pledge. However going up from the £20 pledge to anything else currently available is really expensive when there isn't much to be gained.

      If they added say:

      1. Digital Download of Music Add-on - £5
      2. Download digital copy of "The Dark Wheel" sequel Add-on - £5

Then I would be more than happy to up my pledge. Those types of add-ons don't add any cost to them as they are digital, and you are basically encouraging people to pledge a little more, but still receiving something extra.

It's not a lot of an increase, but if the bulk of the £20 pledgers upped their pledges we would be a whole lot closer!!

      Just a though...............

I think a little bit of wee escaped!

    29. Pēteris Krišjānis on December 19, 2012

@Shadowfax haven't Godus done the same even before getting any insurance that their KS will be financed?

I think everyone's making too big buzz out of it. All it needs clearer wording on sites and that's it :)

    30. William Macdonald on December 19, 2012

The twitter button on is broken! I wanted to retweet this, but the tweet is full of gibberish and doesn't have #EliteDangerous

    31. Shadowfax on December 19, 2012

The Paypal option is pointless and counterproductive. There, I said it. Why didn't you just tell those people "sorry, no", Frontier? This makes all of our jobs more difficult.

    32. Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 19, 2012

Michael, do you have an Elite:Dangerous thumbnail we could use as our profile pic on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc. ?

    33. Ty Corcoran on December 19, 2012

The Blue Danube... Oh the memories...

    34. Coz on December 19, 2012

    35. alxnot on December 19, 2012

Fantastic teaser. Great tone and visuals, even though they're very temporary. I'm even more excited about the game now.

I wish the teaser had been ready when you started the KS campaign though. We would have more backers by now, for sure.

Anyway, this will do it! Good luck, to all of us really!
      Spread the good news!

    36. Liqua on December 19, 2012

Brings a tear to my eye this trailer ...
Nice one FD ... short, but to the point.

    37. Nats on December 19, 2012

Just wanted to echo Michael's comments that all of this video, except the first shot, is in-game 3d footage.

    38. Stuart Kerrigan on December 19, 2012

@Pascal I'd raise my £20 pledge by £10-20 if there was anything worth doing it for, like the SPL expansion! This is a game, not a charity. :)

    39. Creator Frontier Developments on December 19, 2012

The PayPal option is for the people that cannot contribute through Kickstarter for whatever reason.

    40. pascal blanche on December 19, 2012

If all existing backers add £20 at least right now, Elite will sure become a reality. just raised!

    41. isotone on December 19, 2012

fire damage on the ship in bounty hunter bit looks particularly good btw! not seen anything like that look that nice.

    42. isotone on December 19, 2012

looking good! any plans for a digital version of the £90 tier so that you can get all the future add-ons etc?

    43. Maalak on December 19, 2012

Isn't introducing paypal a dangerous game for this kickstarter project ?
As long as the 1,25M£ objective isn't reached, each pound given throught paypal can be considered as a pound lost to reach the objective.
It would be a shame to finish the crowdfunding campaign with 500k thanks to Paypal, but a KS campaign lost with "only" 1M£ obtained, so meaning "0" overall.

    44. Phil Hellary on December 19, 2012

Any chance you could add some extra reward for +£10? Early birds who got in on the £20 digital game copy might like to pledge a little extra but there's not much incentive to do so right now.

    45. Luca on December 19, 2012

      @Braben, Michael, etc.
You've asked for it... you got it! Raised my pledge instantly.

    46. Manolis Krestas on December 19, 2012

the 10k limit on the digital copy will slow down the fund... the jump from 20 to 30 pounds are a lot for some (50% more)

Okay, I'll join in with the elite stats guys by saying that I'll pledge all the ad revenue generated from my Elite fan site; to the project.

@Michael, I just this second made a comment on update #10. Basically, it's asking if you're still going to include some backstory involving Dream-Ware? It would be cool if you could. :)
