@Kim: Sounds pretty awesome. I made my own cabinet for a guitar amp, but the thing took forever to build and rattles and buzzes horribly. Decided I'm not much suited to practical stuff like that!
@Chris, sounds nice :) Yes you're compromised a little with passive cooling, but what you've described is no slouch :)
@JTK Nice idea.
@Chris Booker: I'd wager they're waiting for the 70% milestone which is only £170 away.
@Chris, i made my own cabinet :p its around same size as a big tower. huge space inside, :) problems is getting long enough power cables XD
@Michael - I think I understand where you're going with the design forum now, at least well enough to write some Wikipedia text to pique people's interests. Would you say traditional publishers fulfill the role of a trusted source that can speak for the customer without being so close to the design process they miss the wood for the trees; and that the design forum is about replicating that functionality in a crowdsourced environment?
If so, would you mind saying it in your own words with the right jargon, so I can quote it in the article?
@Knarlfin: I built mine into a Fractal Design: Define R4 case, which is a real monster of a case. Virtually the size of a mini fridge, but the empty space helps keep things nice and cool! The only thing I'm worried about for playing SC/E:D is my graphics card, as I went with a passively cooled Radeon HD 7750, which might be a bit on the weak side if I want to play with the GFX settings on high. Plays Crysis 2 okay though

Well also I hope my own endeavors go well next year which would mean buying new desktop would not be an issue...
@Jason, the gpu is easy to exhange to a way stronger, even a 450 or any ati cards beat your entrance desktop card.
with that upgrade you should have enough power for standard pc per today. mabye uprade your memory only from 4 to 8gb.
Books Set in the Elite: Dangerous world:
"...And Here the Wheel" by John Harper.
"Elite Anthology: Tales from the Frontier" by Chris Booker.
"Survivor - An Elite: Dangerous Gamebook" by Nathanael Page.
"The Space Farer's Tale" by Sean A Curtin.
Supermassive: (an Elite universe novel) by Andre Czausov.
These writers will all pledge for the writers pack if their campaign succeed
You, better keep your eyes open at todays update then... ;)
That was for JTK ... my KS editor tool seemed to have an error (principally in that it doesn't exist yet ...)
@Jason, yes you could upgrade that. In 2014 it will be showing it's age, particularly the CPU, so I wouldn't spend much on it - as any graphics upgrade will likely be bottlenecked by the CPU. You'd also need to check the size of the case, to see whether it can accommodate the new GPU.
But I would imagine, for a reasonably small budget, you could get many years out of it if you don't expect all the bells and whistles in terms of graphics quality.
@Granite given that the engine is multi-platform by nature, it cannot be DirectX only.
Also I don't mind playing in low res if things are jerky.
@JT& - I would have thought so; not necessaily my thing, but the more diverse the 'books' the better (worst thing would be if all the books are almost identical style); we already have at least one 'gamebook' (I think the other gamebook author might have pulled back from the idea)
17k Backers of which 10k have pleged £20, which means more than half of the backers comes from that pledgelevel. If I were FD I would unlimit the £20 level and give the £30 something extra.
@Chris: I've just built a mini-ITX HTPC for my mother. Cool and quiet. But it's based on AMD Trinity so quite powerful too and could be used as an entry level gaming machine today.
@Andre - thanks, unsubtle clue as to planned ED tactics!
I got the first ever 2KAD when I was a kid, loved it. And a complete collection of Starlord. All long gone now, lost in some attic somewhere I should think.
Do we know when today's update will be? I need to venture out and spend some credits on Christmas stuff, don't want to miss anything :-)
Also idea for @frontier - why not do a live twitter Q&A with DB on the subject of Elite Dangerous? Great way to get the hash tag trending....
@Knarlfin & others
Ok I have one of these:
It has Graphics Card:GeForce G210, interface Interface:N/A/PCI-E/PCI-E 2.0
Would it be ok, and would it be easy to upgrade ?
@Kim, that's what I thought :) Very hot CPUs and very slow by today's standards. I threw my last P4s away this summer.
Just a thought: would an Elite based comic book (series?) make an acceptable candidate for the Writer's pack?
@ Jason, just leave any HW config updates for later and stop worrying about it now, it's 15 month until the game is out (if everything works as planned) and the designers are able to specify the minimal/optimal requirements. Just take it easy and spend the money currently in your pocket on ED instead ;)
£250 to 70%! Woot come on 70%
@Cmd Fozza: My old one does too! And it's got all these weird humming noises and all sorts. I built my new one so that I could mess around with music stuff, but now would actually recommend it just for normal PC usage
To who ever upped their pledge from £20 to £30, you gave me a shock. Just wrote down "740" before it dropped, and then juumped to "750"! Well done, makes me want to go and bump up mine now.
Knarfin, he use a old pentium 4, 3ghz, the last sold out at stores 6.5 years ago.
so, its so old its actualy a ancient relic of intel vs amd fight. the p4 3ghz was known to get overclocked to 3.8ghz,
that means he have the ddr first generation memory, mabye actualy rambus memory.
@Fozza - wasn't yours of the same era as the Vulcan bombers IIRC? :D
@Chris - mine sounds like a jet fighter :(
Pledged for Supermassive: (an Elite universe novel) on Pozible. http://www.pozible.com/index.php/archive/index/13383/description/0/0
For all those considering a new PC build for Elite, I suggest looking into how to make a 'silent' PC. I did, and though it did cost me a bit extra, but it was really a good decision. The only time I hear my PC is when I'm using the DVD drive, or turn on my external hard-drive.
you can get some half-decent low-power graphics cards these days, take a look at the radeon HD7750. I run one if those with a 300w stock psu from my Dell.
@Jason, it's probably better to understand your existing system specs and then you can get better advice/recommendations.
For those that sits on the £20 tier, but intend to increase your pledge later, this is the time to do it! We need as many new backers in here as possible!
The £20 exchange rate to dollar is $32
I'm of the opinion that combat rating should remain unchanged ; elite have always been the pinnacle of combateers, there could be different rankings for other skills such as trading, but should never contribute to combat rating.
I think I have one of the older PCI express interfaces. Do I need to be careful which card I get, is their compatibility considerations?
That said, most games still are able to run on DirectX 9
@Jason, dead easy. New PSU and Graphics card, but again my advice is to wait until you need to consider it. In 2014 things will have moved on and it may be better long term to just start from scratch.
Cmdr Bond: If the game needs DirectX 10 or 11 then it won't run on Windows XP.
@John Purcell. My thoughts are for a long term atrophy, not after a few days etc, but maybe weeks or months. It would need careful balancing so as you weren't having to top up every time you logged in.
I have a older desktop HP (4GB with quad core), but I think the power supply would not handle a new graphics card and it just has on board graphics and is four years old. It is PCI express though. How hard would that be to upgrade I am thinking.
@MPat : Thanks! It's the main reason I think my novel project ended up being the last :-o Love your SD avatar too... my fave story in the 2KAD!
@Knarlfin [Create The Legend]: Not too sure I'd be happy about my combat rating stating to go backwards if I decided to do some mining/trading for a bit.
@Michael -- Sounds good. I like the idea of other rankings, and it makes sense to have them combine somehow into an overall pilot's rank, but it's also reassuring to know that the "pure" combat rank will most likely be preserved in some form or other. Cheers.
@Jason, I would hold fire until you're ready to play.
Onboard/On-chip graphics are improving all the time, and this finds it's way into laptop technology.
@Andre - I absolutely love your video. Well done!
We have another milestone coming up! Soon we will overtake Project Eternity when it comes to number of comments and considering they had almost 74.000 backers I say that is quite a feat!! :)
Does anyone know of another project with more comments (game)?
I am starting to think my modest laptop with on board graphics will have trouble.
I had been thinking up buying new desktop, but to be honest that is not really on the cards.
