Have a question?
@Michael Your old pledge addons website hasnt been updated with the new addons such as the mug.
@Gaz - Well, yeah anything that generats publicity and interest is worthwhile, but a Q&A on something like Reddit seems pretty much ideal in that it would attract a huge worldwide audience, and be a massive response to those people who pop up from time to time complaining about Frontier being obtuse.
Alpha colony probably said the 98% stats as well...oh wait :)
@Tim I've seen that stat being banded around quite a lot and wondered where it came from.
@Talimun - Yeah, even if we don't take into acount cities and landmarks, it'd be a huge undertaking just to map out the landmasses. I'd be happy with something even vaguely similar to the real Earth, but will David Braben?
Statiscally speaking, we have a 98% chance of funding, with a 2% probability of error ;)
@ Dan Brough
Purchases of vanity items is a possibility. We're not actively looking at iit as yet though.
@MonkeyMan ermm, why are you looking at your mobile rather than the show ?
@Talimun I believe you can still hand craft planets even when the system is procedurally generating other exo-planets.
Polaris - not really! But David B said we would make it, and Chuck Norris did too (after roundhouse kicking all sub-target projections into whimpering surrender).
Only £46 away from £766k. Quite impressive considering we were celebrating passing £750k earlier
Am at the O2 watching jeff Wayne's war of the worlds.... Amazing! Makes me want to fly my cobra even more! :)
So statistically speaking we now have a 98% chance of being successfully funded?
@Matt Anything is a worthwhile exercise at this point. Updates or no funding in my opinion.
@Matt, yeah not sure how procedural generation will work for the 'known' planets. probably means Sol system will be part of future expansions as Im not sure today's technology is up for that level of realism. (We are talking about a whole world here, after all)
Well, despite it cheesing some people off, I've gone for the 'free updates FOREVER': hooray!!!! And pledges up by around £20,000 today - guess a lot of people are liking what they've heard from FRONTIER over the last 4 days or so. : D
@Talimun - Google Earth had a flight sim? I didn't even realise that. I wonder how Frontier will cope with Earth when the planetary landings come about. Will it be possible to do fly-bys of famous landmarks?
@Andy Ah, with you. I'm arguing with conspiracy theorists in another online life. No sense of humour allowed.
@Matt, with you on that one. I remember when google earth came out wth a little flight simulator built in, and I though to myself, if only we could get this level of detail in elite. Heres hoping DB can!
@Michael/David - Is there any chance of David/Frontier doing a Q&A session before the end of the campaign? A Reddit AMA (ask me anything) for example? I appreciate a lot of the answers will probably be 'we don't know that yet', but I still think it'd be a worthwhile exercise.
@Polaris @Tam It's early adoption with a pricetag.
@Gaz, [wink mode] was on for that last post. I'll see you there.
@Talimun I've been musing that too, maybe its similar to the psychology expressed with auctions? Project gets momentum and you want to be part of its success or help it towards success and then gain the rewards? The last 48 hours is final decision time, plus the backer will know for sure how much money they can spend, plus all the updates will be in place. All this could contribute :). Oh and welcome.
I just watched the update 12 video again. The planetary landings that David talks about, with cityscapes, trees, animals wandering around... it all sounds way beyond anything I ever hoped from a game. It's the whole galaxy in a box (or download)! I for one don't mind waiting for the planetary landings to be perfected if it means perfecting David's ideas. Consider me well and truly mind boggled at the scope of this game!
@Tal And yes, I see the parallel, but then life itself is just an iterated prisoners dilemma right?
sorry for double post....my 'tinternet sure been acting funny today
@David Law +lots =)
@ Michael - a penny for your thoughts regards my suggestion of following a similar approach to Team Fortress 2? I understand you're a busy bee of course...
first time poster, long time reader. Really lookng forward to see this game being made, Very fond memories of Frontier.
That beng said, is anyone else struck by how similar Kickstarter is to prisoner's dilemma? I wonder what aspect of game theory explains the sharp spike seen at the end of some projects.
@Michael: some more clarity on "the level of multiplayer is up to you" might be good for a future update. Some of us (e.g. me) are making assumptions about how the game will work by analogy with other games, and coming away with concerns.
I've mentioned before that economic gameplay is as big a part of the fun as anything else, and buying in-game credits is a big deal there. The other guy doesn't need to shoot me, he just needs to sell enough goods at a loss that my trade route starts losing money, or buy up all the goods in my favourite frontier system, or appear out of nowhere with a ship that has a better profit margin. On the other hand, I don't need to be the universe's best pilot, I just need to lend money to the guy that is, or play the in-game stock market, or make the right bet which way a war will go.
This is an aspect of the game that will be hard to get right, and will need to be right on day one. I'm really excited about the possibilities, and I apologise if that gets lost amongst my concerns about details.
There is only 1 person that can deliver this game (with his team), I think he has shown us all in the videos, just what he sees as the future. I for one have had my mind opened to just how fantastic this could be.
If he can get stage one created to his standards, then the future expansions will never be in doubt.
Lets give this all the support we can
@ Chris Herbert: Planetary landings were hardly a core element of gameplay in Frontier. For me it was just something i did a few times for amusement, then went back to docking with stations because it was less of a faff. It's right the FD team concentrate on getting the core game right at launch and save the side fluff for later. That way the will have the time make planetary landing something that brings a new play dynamic, rather than something that is just a pretty distraction.
What isn't clear? What do you want to know?
@Chris That's right. At least he's cool enough to tell us all. As FD Michael said, let's get the game made first and deal with pressuring FD to come through later.
@Gaz Bailey Good point. Its basically what I was suggesting but the reverse. I was just suggesting the possibility that we have a basic landing from the outset. But I can understand David wanting it done properly and waiting a bit longer for it.
@Thiago What's unclear?
I fully support the game, after all the first ELITE game made me spent many nights flying trough space and trying to dock in stations (without the docking computer of course, how fun is that?).
But those last announcements made the development path very unclear to me, at the point that I'd rather wait and see than increase my pledge...
Anyhow, I still can't wait to see the game.
@Chris And it doesn't occur to you that, if landings can't be implemented as Braben wants because of unforeseen financial disaster, that they wouldn't implement a lesser solution because, after all, he did say they want them in the game?
@Chris If demand isn't there then I'd imagine he could quite easily do as you suggest as the technology is already there.
@Chris Not sure why DB/FD took so long in setting expectations, but honestly isn't it better to have the game actually delivered in March 2014 than adding another year or two for development to bring the game up to the point where SPL (Seamless Planetary Landings) actually mean a lot more in the game rather than a neat feature no-one uses? When people were discussing SPL a common argument against them was concerning what use they would be as well as how they will look when you reach yet another planet looking very much alike another one in another system. To bring this up to the level DB mentions is going to take a lot of work and yes I believe he can do it, just not within a year. I see your argument about having a standard landscape as it was in Frontier, but for everyone who wants that there will be others who will ridicule it.
@Gaz Bailey I wasn't suggesting I or anyone distrusts them. I can see how passionate David is about this game - I just meant its a possibility that we may never see the future expansions if the demand isn't there.
@ Graeme Fryer
Pledges and pledge upgrades are separate deliveries so you need P&P for each. However multiple pledge upgrades only need the one P&P cost.
I just had a thought....to support continued development of the game, FD could do worse that adopt a similar model to that of TF2...allow micropayments for cosmetic items ie parts to customise your ship with and suchlike
@ Chris Herbert
You're right we should have made it clear earlier, we did look at ways of even a partial implementation, but that doesn't come close to David's vision of the game. There is a risk that if Elite fails (and we'll do what we can to make sure that doesn't happen) then the expansions don't get made.
But if we don't get the core game made then there's no chance at all. Part of the reason for the long wait was that we couldn't deliver what David wanted the game to be. This is his baby and he wants it right. But we all wanted the game to come out and a staged approach is the most sensible way to make that happen.
There's something about postage in the FAQ. As others say, maximum payable is £30.
@Chris Flippancy argument has some merit, but where are these 'many' people who distrust DB and FD. You're the first to suggest they won't come through that I've seen.
