@B1gdeano - For Refuelling and Gas Mining would be my guess. Add atmospheric elements like that so that you can bounce along an atmosphere and refuel or mine the gas (either from planets or stars) and watch your ship get bounced around.

    2. Liqua on December 14, 2012

      @oddball - again we're in agreement :-)
      Michael ?

I'm not quite sure how many hours I spent playing the various elite games :D I'm so excited by all this!!!
I've been delighted to see David working along side the Raspberry Pi folks also.. its been inspiring!

Just pledged there! Happy Christmas folks!

Hate to say it, but i am disappointed that planetary landings is going to be left out, instead of being in the game from the start.

It sounds more and more like to be an unfinished product in the end, and that is for me a bad thing - if this game is going to have no way of getting patched offline, that is. I value being offline and still being able to enjoy a game to its fullest.

I am getting increasingly sceptical about this.

You guys need to relax. Speaking from over 20 years of experience as a developer myself. Bigger/more does almost never mean better. Most of the time dreams will stay dreams if goals are not realistic. It is always better to nail that 30 seconds of perfect core gameplay over unrealistic timeline goals/secondary features.

    6. Styggron on December 14, 2012

@Alien Yes. Most important thing is to inspire and ancourage now. Lets hit that target!

    7. Liqua on December 14, 2012

@B1gdeano - True enough. You could get reasonably close to suns / planets in the original Elite before you blew up :)

    8. HellaCMDR on December 14, 2012

@Alien I agree. There's no point in rowing about it here for twelve hours like the last issue. FD should pronounce something about this asap.

    9. Pēteris Krišjānis on December 14, 2012

By the way, landings by day one were never promised by David. I see it a little communication problem from FD side (Hype is infection without solid facts), however with Michael attached and their open honesty about how they see this project now I think they got it right this time.

In same time - can we get this pup to 60% this weekend? Let's try (or at least make it easy for Monday to push it over).

    10. SpikeCraib on December 14, 2012

@ Synchromesh - spot on with your comments. Waiting until 2014 is bad enough without further development time on top.

    11. Styggron on December 14, 2012

I want to see over £800K by tomorrow morning my time. (It's 6:34am Sat morning now).

    12. Richard Harrison
      on December 14, 2012

@ Alien: Not for me. It will define how much I finish up pledging.

    13. Styggron on December 14, 2012

@Phillip Totally spot on. Personally I think planetary landing WILL be something you get in the main game just not something available from day 1 because it is soooooooooooooooo huge.

    14. Liqua on December 14, 2012

@Andy - good for you - won't regret it. Elite Dangerous is going to be awesome.

    15. B1gdeano on December 14, 2012

Dont forget that DB didnt say you couldnt fly into the atmosphere of a planet, but you just cant land on them!

He said you will get heat effects upon entry but not be allowed due to ship not being equipped etc

SO to me that sounds like you could still take a quick dip into the atmosphere and see the clouds etc but not get deep down into it.

      Still fun!

    16. Philip Coutts on December 14, 2012

Stretch goals usually get announced once a project has made it's full funding. Now when we get fully funded and are looking at stretch goals it may well be that the first is planetary landing on the understanding that it won't be available on day one but would then be a free upgrade to everyone who participated in the Kickstarter, same with the other ideas such as walking around your ship. Make these stretch goals and then we get them for free. That said no point in talking about stretch goals until we make it to £1,250,000 so lets concentrate on that first.

      @Oddball - good idea

    18. Alien on December 14, 2012

As the total is over £500,000 short of it's target,
isn't any disagreement about what this is or isn't DLC
and if it should or shouldn't be in the game on Day 1

All a bit moot at the moment?

    19. Jason S on December 14, 2012

I was not expecting this game to have to pay more after to get the best bits.

I would have thought they could have made there money selling in game items and many more copies in the shops.

    20. Styggron on December 14, 2012

@Lars I'd say Frontier know this is the main thing people want so it would be one of the first expansions but with the detail David wants (and we expect) it will be a while I would say. Total and complete and utter guess 4-7 months. PURE conjecture on my part. Enough to keep going on the original momentum too. :-)

    21. Maxeren on December 14, 2012

Oh for gods sake... either have faith in FD or don't... who wants planets that look the same everytime you land on them, maybe with some rocks looking different and other colors.. that worked back in frontier.. won't work today, because we expect more from our games today, so it will take time to develop...

    22. Kim Håland on December 14, 2012

@Styggron, problem is im a completionist, thats why i usualy never buy a game with dlcs.. hate holes in my game library.

i got 400 games. and none of these have dlcs.
Expansion packs yes, but no dlcs.

    23. HellaCMDR on December 14, 2012

@Andy Stewart Nice one. I'm thrilled by the update myself.

    24. Oddball on December 14, 2012

I'll go with that but there have been 10000 backers of the £20 pledge. Surely the £200,000 generated from this deserves something in return. Maybe ONE free add-on

Maybe a new pledge tier should be created.....

      Pledge £65 or more...
Receive ALL future add-on upgrades for FREE
      plus all rewards above.

Now that sounds tempting to me. It might make a few of the £20 pledgers get their wallets out again :-)

      @Pēteris Krišjānis
I see it as an improvement because i had the feeling that there finally is some sort of communication. I found it strange when some people here were cheering up because FD was posting more about unimportant stuff whilst still ignoring certain questions.

If there are design decisions/problems/restrictions if prefer being informed in a honest way. Then both sides know how the situations looks like and what to do best. Saying so, i would prefer getting some further insights into the questions i was asking as they f.e. affect non PC users from backing the project.

What i'm not so positive about is the current pledge level but i hope that they will make it.

And you, how do you feel about it?

    26. Joe Scicluna on December 14, 2012

I found the latest update (12) very exciting.

Playing Elite promises to be a very comprehensive game experience indeed, to the extent that one might actually lose oneself in game play. There is a real risk of neglecting the real world's chores and duties...

I am confident that this game will be extraordinary !

    27. HellaCMDR on December 14, 2012

That is, in itself, a reason to up your pledges. That is what this kickstarter needs to succeed, both more backers and a massive jontyfest.

    28. Andy Stewart on December 14, 2012

As an early birthday present to myself just upped mine from 20 to 60 after that video update - can't wait :)

    29. Captain Dangerous on December 14, 2012

So if they say that at Day 1 you don't get planetary landings but that it will be released later as a free patch then people would be happy? You could just add some fiction to the universe that explains why the ships can't do planetary landings and then when the patch is released there has been some "scientific breakthrough" that means you need to buy an upgrade for your ship (with in-game credits!) that allows you to enter the atmosphere and land on planets.

    30. Missing avatar

      Associat0r on December 14, 2012

@FD - why not have simple barren planets to land on at least with simple cities and a few spaceports?

    31. HellaCMDR on December 14, 2012

Black ops style season pass for all pledgers at £200 or above. Define this in terms of time, and what features FD would like to implement in that time.

Both sides agree to negotiate with one another if this delivery schedule proves to be impossible when the time comes.

    32. Liqua on December 14, 2012

@Lars - I play BF3 so very familiar with it. DLC would be maps & weapon packs / vehicle packs. Patches would include these weapons / vehicles (but not maps) that everyone can use after certain conditions are met. (or DL them to bypass these restrictions)
Diablo 3 is suffering from the same issue right now. PvP was promised at the start - game released and it was not - so once patch 1.1 is released PvP will be introduced for free for everyone. The addon pack (Act 5) will not be free.

    33. Dwayne Dibley on December 14, 2012

I've just looked through Andrew Winter's graphs. To the naked eye it seems like there has been a slight upswing in pledges following this update, although nothing near as drastic as the one following the gameplay update

    34. Synchromesh on December 14, 2012

Ok watched the Video and heres what i think.

Looks like we are going to get the basic Elite with incredible graphics and playability.
Huge detailed space stations and the universe we imagined..Everthing and more that was in the original Elite which is what i expected...

We will get Atmospheric planets but not much or anything on them to start with.
That does not bother me to much right away due to time restraints and how quick i want the game..

Do i want to play Elite sooner rather than later...Yes
Do i want to wait till 2015 so the planets have more detail and i can walk around...No

Most of my time will be in space trading, traveling and playing...Just like the originals so walking around planets etc isnt my immediate concern but with updates im happier we will get them.

The truth is what we want will take far longer than 2 years to create so i would rather be playing the game whilst this is done than sat here wanting it...Who wouldnt say no to a playable demo now so whats the difference in my opinion.

The vision is incredible and i would rather DB kept his word and did it properly..Meanwhile il be in space kicking ass's :)

Will we pay for updates ? I would like to know that as well but if we started our own crowd fund after to keep the ball rolling they could afford to do more and faster without the need to charge for any updates...

      Just my thoughts ..

    35. Styggron on December 14, 2012

@Kim this modular approach also totally works with gameplay because I can decide not to buy a major component because that is not an aspect of the game I want to play.

Modularity is the key just like in programming. :-)

    36. Kim Håland on December 14, 2012

mabye have a bonus pledge for the expansion pack?, dont know. thats what i woulda done though.

    37. Styggron on December 14, 2012

@OriginalBayBoy I agree re your point regarding DLC but look at the complexity and cost these amazing updates will cost Frontier, everything still needs to be viable still. The core game will be solid and extensive and these will be like no add ons/expansion we have ever seen, Frontier would be mindfull of that in their core modular design.

People will want to know how much for this update and this one but they would not know ANY of that or what kind of updagrade would cost. Going by their designs as I mentioned I would say there would be upgrade levels and yes having something SPECIAL for all the KS people is a get your pledgers in everyone..............join and jonty !!! :-)

    38. Richard Harrison
      on December 14, 2012

I personally think for something like Planetary Landing they should have it as a proper DECLARED stretch goal here or acknowledge that you'll have to pay for it later - I actually think it could be another smaller Kickstarter as well, which would be my suspicion as it isn't in the 'basic' game.

    39. Shadowfax on December 14, 2012

@Gaz yeah I guess they really, really liked planets.

    40. Kim Håland on December 14, 2012

@Styggron, of course i totaly agree that landing and running around do cost, and it should get back, but
i would say this is not a dlc package os style, its a expansion pack,
dlc for me is missions, and other retarded things.

    41. Pēteris Krišjānis on December 14, 2012

@Gaz Bailey Maybe few, but really not that noticeable

    42. HellaCMDR on December 14, 2012

Wow, somebody withdrew because there's no planetary landings on day 1? Really?

    43. Richard Harrison
      on December 14, 2012

@OriginalBadBoy: I'm in agreement mate. I posted something earlier (and in the comments section of the latest update) for a breakdown of what we are getting and then what we may have to pay for and what we'll get free (differentiated by pledge tier if that's significant). We need this vagueness addressing in my opinion.

    44. Lars Jørgen Kire[Lortsamler] on December 14, 2012

Liqua: Yes,somebody that pledged a lot of money in here, should in my opinion not be asked for anything more later.

    45. Shadowfax on December 14, 2012

@Gaz it was always bound to be controversial.

    46. Styggron on December 14, 2012

@Associat0r THey would develop "update levels" I would say, some free, some small $$ some much more extensive. eg planetary landings is something that sounds even MORE amazing than what I would have thought it would be that is a major update I'd say and probably a paid one. I'd say details of that are coming too.

    47. Pēteris Krišjānis on December 14, 2012

As small contributor I second that those who has pledged £150 or more should receive addons for free. I really like to see dedication from those guys and I can agree that success of this KS comes partly from them and their passion for Elite.

For me I'm ready to pay full price for addon. I know that it will be worth it.

    48. HellaCMDR on December 14, 2012

Oh dear, I see this is proving divisive.

    49. Lars Jørgen Kire[Lortsamler] on December 14, 2012

@Liqua: Let's for example use Battlefield as a example. The game mechanics are already there, future patches are free, but things like new weapons, and maps is a dlc. Do you get my poit now?

    50. Styggron on December 14, 2012

@Kim that is a good question and something they will work out in time. We know we will get a SOLID CORE game that will be amazing. This modular approach to updates are is perfect and the time and effort required to get everything right like planetary landings will be just amazing in scale so I would say it would be a mixture of paid and free. Frontier would have to get some recoup back because these are not just the usual little update or even a regular expansion, it is a giant expansion that will cost Frontier a lot of money to create depending on what it is eg planetary landings.

Maybe what they will do is have a pledge level that includes something like "1 major update of your choice" They might have update "levels".

Kim also you have an interesting question if a player does not have that expansion you mentioned an NPC might try to steal your ship so there's no problem there so the balancing aspect is very important and we know David and his team have REALLY thought long and hard for this AND have all mechanisms in place to get this done. Elements such as designing the game core code and structure that will allow this to happen which is an enormous task in itself, imagine trying to cater for something you don't know you will have yet..... this is Frontier's forte. Another element is the design decision forum this can help shape what we do have....AND we have a mention of possible stretch goals if we exceed we know what gets developed first.

Remember David is a perfectionist and it all needs to be done properly so it takes a great deal of time and money and they can't get it all out in one package day 1. This modular approach is excellent I am hoping people will be imbued with excitement over this because it is going to redefine the word AMAZING !
