About this project
What am I Creating?
I am creating an architectural-scale installation just below West River Parkway near the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis from the humblest of materials — cardboard. I will create eight blooms ranging in height from 15 to more than 20 feet, assembled into a cluster. Each bloom has a round ten-foot diameter top that forms a permeable enclosure, creating an environment that can be explored throughout the night as part of Northern Spark 2012.
With these Night Blooms, I am constructing a structure where pattern and decoration can thrive in architecture and creating a spatial graffiti as a purely decorative enhancement to the built environment. Using my own specialized CNC cardboard knife, I will leverage to produce and assemble my first outdoor cardboard construction. This project uses my interests in the history of architectural ornamentation, as well as its expression today using contemporary tools in unexpected ways with unusual materials.
Your support and contribution to my project will go towards funding stacks and stacks of cardboard, cutting knives, electricity for my CNC, and cool installation lighting. As a thank you, My CNC cutting machine and I will be making interlocking 16" cardboard circles for DIY sculptures. Every contributor of $6 or more will receive a note written on actual scrapes of cardboard cut for this project. Donations starting at $25 will be rewarded with at least 8 circles to build your own cardboard sculpture.
