"Hunt for the Padawan - A Star Wars Story” follows a young Padawan Jedi segregated from the universe on an isolated planet, forced to hide from the evil Empire after the chaotic events of Order 66. After reuniting with an old friend, he is led on an adventure across the galaxy after their wherabouts are discovered by Lord Vader and one of his Inquisitors.
We're a group of young filmmakers based in New Zealand, and have had this film in mind for two years. We feel that we are now finally ready to begin production. We've recently finalized the script, and hope that with the help of your backing we can make this film a reality. We're currently making costumes and props.
For this fan project to become a reality for how ambitious we want it to be, we're going to need to find funding. $1700 NZD (around $1100 USD) is about the minimum we need to be able to produce this film - we hope we can raise more though, the bigger budget we have the better the film can be!
We have a small team at the moment which we hope to expand, but to do that we'll need a budget behind us. With your help we believe we'll be able to achieve an authentic Star Wars feel, by acquiring high quality props and costume pieces, to camera equipment and film gear. If we beat our goal, we should be able to produce our own original score for the film too, which would be amazing! We hope to have completed filming by the end of February.
To achieve an authentic Star Wars feel and atmosphere, we will need to invest in making and purchasing realistic props such as lightsabers, stormtrooper armor and blasters like the E-11, etc.
This film requires heavy use of VFX to bring the world of Star Wars to life. Throughout this Kickstarter page you can see many different test examples of CGI, we need support to be able to make the CG in the film the best it can be.
If we reach our goal we'll be able to create awesome looking props that make the film look far more real, far more professional. We're currently making costumes, below you can see two examples of a work in progress.
The costumes are being developed, and have gone through many iterations looking better and better each time. We hope to improve on them further - we need to find Adam some proper boots for Tinto's costume. Some of the materials we have used could also be improved such as the area around the belt.
Our film will include a range of different set locations.
We intend to use green screen in a variety of different scenes, by reaching our budget we hope to be able to make use of the local SAE Insistute facilities in Auckland City, New Zealand - where we are based. For ship interiors and other difficult locations, we will be using the SAE Greenscreen studio:
The Waitakere Ranges is a mountain range near Auckland, which features plenty of the scenery we desire for this film. You can view the location at the following Google Maps link:
Another location will be Shakespeare Regional Park, northeast of Auckland. It's the location we used in the Kickstarter video above! You can view this site here:
Film-making has been a passion of ours for many years now, and we've been fans of Star Wars since we were young. This film has been an idea of ours for just over two years now, and we've been slowly realizing we can't accomplish what we want on our own, we need your help. Star Wars is something we absolutely love so we want to take this film seriously, and give back to the community.
We're an indie film group based in Auckland, New Zealand, who are super passionate about Star Wars. We're young, but we're experienced. The roles for the film will be:
James Poole - Director, Actor & Lead VFX Editor
Adam Curlewis - Director, Actor & Editor
Dylan Hollick - Lead Cameraman, Actor, Assistant script writer
Andrej Serafimovski - Sound Design, Cameraman
Matthew White - Actor
Quinn Klijn - Concept Art
We also hope to gain the support of Outpost 42 Garrison, New Zealand's representative of the worldwide Star Wars costuming group, the 501st Legion. We'd also like to thank First Scene New Zealand, from whom we will be renting Stormtrooper costumes. Special thanks to Ultrasabers, where our custom lightsabers will be coming from.
Thank you everybody, we hope we've gained your interest with this Kickstarter and choose to make this project a reality! Follow us on Instagram to see regular updates of progress on the film.
Please note this is a non-profit fan film. The final product will likely end up on YouTube, entirely free to watch. We look forward to consistently updating this Kickstarter page with our progress towards release.
Risks and challenges
There will be many hurdles to jump along the road for this project, just like any other short film. Locations are distant and the crew is small, actors could be sick or have other commitments they need to tend to. The largest aspect to overcome will be costuming and crew size - we need to find more crew members and hopefully we will gain a budget from you guys to fit them with stormtrooper outfits and the like.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
