Citadel of the Sky Pirates (Canceled)
Your Gear, Your Game, Our Cards! Citadel of the Sky Pirates (CoSP) The Steampunk Cosplay Action Card Game
Message from Ian Brody, President of Griggling Games
We have some bad news for you all. It doesn’t look like our kickstarter is going to successfully fund, and rather than have it slowly perish, we’re going to be pulling the plug. We’re looking to learn from our experience so we can successfully reboot the kickstarter at a later date. First off, if you want to be kept in the loop for future news about Citadel of the Sky Pirates, you can send us a message through kickstarter or on our contact page: http://www.grigglinggames.com/contact-us/
We are going ahead with showing and playtesting the game at Gen Con with three regular LARPing events, and an evening Soiree featuring Magician Michael Mirth. We’ll be joining the Circle City Aerodrome at a party on Saturday night of Gen Con as well, and more, depending on how much I want to challenge myself. (The number one mistake I think we did is try to rush the game to market before we had a chance to send prototypes to steampunk clubs and playtest the game at a bunch of conventions.) In order to get better feedback on our product, we’ve setup a survey we’d appreciate you filling out to get a better sense of how we might make a reboot more successful. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/K8YW699 The more you tell us, the better our product will get! In the meantime, we’ll see you at Origins and Gen Con, and more! Check out everyplace we’ll be on our events calendar: http://www.grigglinggames.com/events/ Thank you so much for your support during this kickstarter campaign and look forward to working with you all to make our product better and move it to the next step! Full Steam Ahead! Ian Tell us what you think! Take the CoSP Survey!
What is Citadel of the Sky Pirates?
Citadel of the Sky Pirates (CoSP) - a new way to spread the broads while blowing a cloud with your mates! Play in your setting or ours; CoSP makes Cosplay, Larping, and Interactive Theatre more fun.
In a fizzing new world of gears, barking irons, steam and airships, you’ll meet all manner of dash-fire allies and scurfy opponents - Sky Pirates, Toffs & Twists, Toolers & Duffers!
Citadel of the Sky Pirates (CoSP) is a Steampunk Cosplay Action Card Game. CoSP is designed to be used with whatever steampunk world you play in! Don’t have one? Play in ours!
If you're someone whose game-time mostly involves sitting, you can also play a simple table top conversion with miniatures.
Build a deck of cards that best portrays your character. While most of the game is live action, uncertainty, like a pickpocket attempt, is resolved through the use of the cards (we really don’t want players actually stealing from each other!). The cards also serve as a catalyst to more exciting play. Appreciate a little intrigue in your game but not quite sure how to make it happen? Play a scandal card! Roll the wrong mark? Well, now you’ve got a bounty on your head!
CoSP can be played with or without a moderator/gamemaster; it really depends on how you want to play. The Chronicles lay out the backdrop of a scene, and let you know what’s in it for you. Use our Chronicles or write your own!
In the full rules, we describe how to resolve interactions based on your play style. Cosplayers can use the cards to add drama and intrigue; LARPers can use the cards as a complete game system or to supplement their own. Theater groups will find the cards improvisation inspiration. All Steampunks will love the artwork!
We have been developing and playtesting CoSP for the past year, and now we’re ready to share it with the world. Being discerning individuals, you’ll agree that the game should be beautifully illustrated and packaged. Since the game is most fun when played with a group, we wanted to engage a critical mass of players - that’s why this kickstarter is so important to the game's success.
The launch of the Citadel of the Sky Pirates will be comprised of three different preset 54-card decks, each with different themes: Raiding, Explorer, and Intrigue. Each deck contains cards for 3 pre-constructed 18-card characters, so there will a total of 9 different pre-constructed characters.
For more options for character customization, you can mix and match the cards from the different decks. Our basic funding goal will have the cards packaged in boxes. Nice boxes. But if we can fund at the $25,000 level, we’ll package the cards in tin boxes - beautifully illustrated Steampunk artifacts you’ll be delighted to own, carry, and show off! Perfect for carrying your deck while playing -but only if we hit the stretch goal!
Finally, each game will contain a sheet of Celerity (quickstart) rules, an extended rulebook for the particulars, some Chronicles (adventures), background on our own setting, & more!
The game is best played with a group, but can be played with as few as three people. We recommend players be 15 and up.
The CoSP system allows you to portray your character, but some of you will want to make it personal – why not sponsor a card! We’ve decided to allow folks to help design (nearly) every single card. If you are a maker, artist, writer, run a theater group, run a convention, or are just someone who wants to show off their awesome character, you can get yourself in the game.
Sponsoring a card is a great value for anyone who wants a bit of notoriety. Working with our illustrator, we will put you and/or your gear on a beautifully illustrated card.
We’ll also give you credit and there’s space for a URL that will redirect to your site, if you have one, as you can see by clicking on the final image.
The idea of card sponsorships came about as an exploration of how to ground our project in the Steampunk community. We want to increase the authenticity by directly engaging the artists, makers, and others most committed to the genre. Yes, it helps us meet our funding goal, but understand we really hope to pull a broader community into this project.
Sponsorship opportunities are available at three levels, depending on if the card appears in one, two, or three of the decks. If there are reprints of this product, you will gain even more eyeballs.
In addition to up front sponsorships, STEAMPUNK CHARACTER, POSEUR PUNK, GEARED UP, EXPLORER, or BON VIVANT backers will have a chance to contribute a photo and vote on which photos will be illustrated and included in the game! We're going to start with two illustrations, and have stretch goals to allow the backers to decide on even more! (Fun!)
How will this work? When you back at one of these levels, you will be asked to send us a photo (in reasonably good taste), which may be turned into an illustration. After the project is over, all of the photos will be loaded onto our site, and all of the backers at these levels will have the opportunity to cast secret votes on their favorites.
In the meantime, we will post the photos sent to our Facebook page, and in backer updates, to help promote your image to your friends and all of the other backers.
More details to come!
Each player in Citadel of the Sky Pirates starts with an 18 card deck including one Background card. Each of the three decks contains 54 cards, enough for three characters, and each deck has some pre-made characters arranged from the cards, just to help you get going when you’re first learning. The cards represent your gear, your skills, your motivations, and objectives.
Each card has a Vigor value. When players need to resolve uncertainty, they pull one of their cards - the higher the Vigor value, the better. Cards with the most potent game text also have the lowest Vigor values, so players must balance their deck between cards that do cool things with cards that might actually make things happen for you.
As you play over repeated sessions, your character will advance and add more cards to your character deck.
Table Top Adaptation
While CoSP is primarily designed to support live action play, we understand that sometimes you need to sit around the table while your characters do the work.
You’ll each need a miniature or some token to represent your character. Use terrain, boxes, a game mat or anything else and setup your rooms on the table. Get a ruler - each step is one inch, and an inch represents about 3 feet (one square per step, on a game mat). Then just play!
We love our retailers. Retailers are eligible for all the swag and goodies. But we need to talk to you. Support us for just a dollar, and we'll get in touch with you to figure out how we can work together. We want to make sure you're happy, give us a try and let us show you how much!
We want you to be able to use the Citadel of Sky Pirates cards in your own setting, but if you're wondering about our setting, I’ll tell you!

Risks and challenges
Citadel of the Sky Pirates (CoSP) faces three challenges: artwork, production, and authenticity. The CoSP system has been written and tested; we are confident we’ve created a mechanic that provides immediate accessibility for all Steampunks. However, the scale of this project has grown quickly.
The first challenge is art. With the core CoSP set having upwards of 100 illustrations, the volume of high quality art needed for producing the game line is daunting – but we want to publish the most amazing looking game that we possibly can, so we are asking for your commitment.
The second challenge is inherent in creating all games; manufacturing, testing, and shipping are huge up-front costs to bear with only a wish and a prayer that you will love the game as much as we do!
The third and most complicated challenge is authenticity. Steampunk has so many variations and offshoots; we really want to make sure that when you see our cards, you say, “Yeah, that’s right!” We discussed, at great length, how we could incorporate the community of Steampunk makers, artists, actors, writers, and clubs. While we have some good ideas about what you’ll want (corsets, goggles, gear-weapons, etc…) we finally realized that the best way would be to engage the community. We know some of you may wonder about having advertising in a game; but we know folks buy really expensive fashion magazines that are almost entirely advertising, for a whole lot more than our game will cost. We know that a lot of you really like looking at the cool stuff Steampunk makers make, and while card sponsorships will obviously rapidly accelerate us to our funding goal, we want you to understand that our primary purpose is to incorporate the Steampunk community into our game in a way that makes it collectively inclusive.
Citadel of the Sky Pirates is the first step in creating a global gaming experience that does not require storytellers to be present at all times. If the CoSP system is successful, we are looking at making a digital version, so thousands of folks can be in game at all times. We’re not talking about replacing the human interaction – just increasing the opportunities for connecting people.
CoSP is about real, tangible Cosplay and this will never change.
We intend to take interactive gaming in a whole new direction and you can get in right on the ground floor by joining us now!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
