Ferguson is a 64-page, 8.5" x 11" printed magazine-style book containing 34 original black and white photographs as well as excerpts of official witness interviews in the shooting death of Michael Brown. Based on two photographic trips to Ferguson, MO after the Michael Brown shooting and then following the grand jury decision, the work goes beyond the violence to offer an intimate and emotional portrait of the community's reaction - from conflict to prayer - and puts the meaning of what occurred in Ferguson in historical context. Ferguson was photographed by internationally-recognized photojournalist David Butow whose work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times and many other publications and exhibitions.

The publication will printed in California using recycled paper and inks.

In addition to the photographs, included are a few pieces of text taken directly from raw interview transcripts used in the grand jury deliberations. One of these in particular offers a nuanced view of the neighborhood where the shooting took place and of Michael Brown himself.

From David: "The main inspiration for printing this zine is the idea of the old Life magazine, where a photo essay could be both immediate and reflective. It comes out shortly after the event but you slow down a bit while looking at it in comparison to television or the internet, and I think that helps put the event in context. And the great thing about the old picture magazines is that you could hang on to them and they would get even more interesting with the passage of time. I hope people will find the zine compelling now, but even more so in a few years."

Risks and challenges

"Ferguson" has been photographed, edited, written and laid out. The only production step that remains is the printing. Your contribution will help produce an artistic document that is both immediate and historic.
