When I set out to learn how to paint almost 20 years ago, I was frustrated by the lack of expert level instructional materials in the bookstores and libraries. Where was this information?? There were amazing painters out there, but they weren't the ones writing the books or teaching. As a younger artist looking for direction, it was easy to find beginner and basic instructional materials, but almost impossible to find master-level resources. Fast forward to 2017 and we now have the media technology in place to capture and distribute more in-depth and specific information to a world wide audience thirsting for the same knowledge. This instructional DVD aims to help the painter understand what it takes to make an EPIC work of oil-painted fantasy art. The in-depth information touches on many of the things I have learned in 20 years as a video game and fantasy illustrator. It's the video I wanted 20 years ago, and the video you get...NOW!
We are already in the final stages of production! The painting, filming and editing are complete and we are putting the final touches on it. For a taste of the production value and more complete introduction to the project and the artist, the video below is the first 5 minutes of the completed DVD:
This instructional painting video shows in thorough detail the production of a major multi-figure oil painting. There is a second additional demo painting that details the planning process, from drawing to digital color study, transfer process and painting...
- construction-drawing techniques
- how to use photographic reference
- traditional and digital tools for planning
- color theory and color studies
- Under-painting and layering
- mediums and materials for oil painting
- Brushes and other studio equipment
- how to mix and apply paint in a logical and methodical manner
- how to paint both in a controlled manner and expressively
This video aims to be a more complete description of the painting process. There are hours of dialogue and discussion about minute details of paint handling and artistic decision-making. I have tried to differentiate this video by not just showing a process but also describing reasoning for my process. I go into great detail about professional-level considerations and the finer points of the craft of oil painting.
Another major difference between this video and others on the market is the production value. 2 cameramen captured footage for the ability to swap angles between the painting and the palette-mixing process. The video was filmed over a number of months, allowing us to capture far more footage of a variety of subjects, versus a quicker demo of a limited scope. This also allowed us to fully prepare for each filming session and ensure the completeness of the information.
This video is almost finished! We are currently color-correcting the camera angles and adding music. Your support gets you this huge DVD and allows us to add additional features! Being one of the original backers of this project, you will get the video first and can start your own epic fantasy painting right away!

Risks and challenges
This video is basically finished and just needs end-polishing. The next step is packaging and manufacturing. I have 2 video editors who are splitting the work and are both capable of finishing the project. The playmats are prepared and ship directly from the manufacturer in the USA. I don't foresee issue with the completion of this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
