Origin of Carbon Grey
I started this project back in 2002 with a sketch and two sentences. But the best way to describe Carbon Grey is for me to show you a progression of images.
I initially did a pencil drawing of Mathilde around 2002 and was immediately flooded with story ideas. I wanted to tell a story about innocence lost, in a war that would consume the world.
I then fleshed out her design and proceeded with her painting. And it wasn't until I painted Giselle (red haired girl) that the story started to solidify in my head. From then on it was work done between jobs and family, whenever I can find the time. I often stay up till 2 or 3 AM to work on it, but knew that I could not do it alone. I brought in Mike, Khari, Paul and Kinsun to help me finish the book. And last year we put out the first chapter of Carbon Grey from IMAGE Comics.
What's the story about?
SummaryThe sisters of the Greys; descendants of Gottfaust – Godlike hero of the nation’s Golden Era.
Both are flawed; imperfect in different ways. Giselle is disobedient, stubborn; but her faults are hidden. Mathilde does not share the physical perfection of her sisters, something she cannot hide. And an exposed flaw can be exploited.
This war is a diversion, orchestrated by the ruthless Queen, Raisa Vasilyeva. She conspires to manipulate Mathilde, twisting Gottfaust’s prophecy to turn sister against sister, all to gain possession of the Stone, the source of Gottfaust’s Godlike power.
When the Kaiser is murdered Giselle must run, traveling west across the scorched battlefields of Mitteleuropa on a mission to deliver a mysterious letter into the heart of enemy territory. Pursued by the sisters and hunted by the enemy Giselle must discover the prophecy’s true meaning before the Cossack queen harnessed the power of the stone to rewrite history itself.
Why is the production so expensive for a comic book?
Carbon Grey is not like any ordinary comic book, it's structure more like a graphic novel. The story is epic in its scale and we wanted to do justice to it. We hand painted each and every panel on the page, it is a slow and meticulous process, but the end result speak for itself. Here is an example of a page we had to redraw and repaint. The final version in the book looks nothing like the original anymore, but it was necessary to propel the story forward.
Why should I care? and why did this project take so long?
Carbon Grey has been a labor of love for me and my friends. We have been working on and off with this project for almost a decade. It is a dedication born of passion, perseverance and hard work. And the belief that one day we'll complete this journey.
I have been self-funding this project for a while now, unfortunately, I've now ran out of money. The budget for the first arc was 40K and the second arc will be the same. I'm now reaching out to the KickStarter community to help me fund the second story arc. It will be another 3 issue mini-series published by IMAGE Comics.
I need to finish Carbon Grey just as much as I need to breathe. It's hard to explain, the need to be creative can be overwhelming at times. "What my mind sees, my hand cannot create fast enough." Please help me and my friends finish what we have started.
Thank you for your generosity.
