About

Z’s Barrel House (ZBH Malting) is a small malt house that is past the planning stage and in need of additional capital to grow into a premier provider of the best locally grown grains for local brewers, bakers and distillers. We are located on the east end of Long Island, New York.

It is time to get funded, get going, and malt us some grains! Z’s Barrel House Malting is looking to you to help fund a brand new idea for the Long Island and area wide brewery market. New York State has created the New York State Farm Brewery Law which is a great law as opposed to most, which will help the brewer and the farmer grow to untold heights

Malted Wheat from Long Island Farm
Malted Wheat from Long Island Farm

New York State Farm Brewery Laws have changed the landscape of brewing, by making it necessary for farm breweries to buy 20 percent of their grain from New York State for the next 4 years then it increases to 60 percent, then it goes up again to 90 percent. New York State has 53 farm breweries in operation and more are planned. In addition to the craft brewers there are approximately 8 distilleries in the Long Island/NYC area. No local malt houses exist to provide the grains that are needed to fulfill the requirements. That leaves a huge opening for the local farmers and a malt house  to emerge and prosper. You can be a part of it!

Beer is made up of;  Water + Malted Grains + Yeast + Hops

Malted barley is the foundation of beer. Barley doesn't do anything in the raw state it needs to be transformed by malting to make the enzymes, carbohydrates and proteins necessary for fermentation.  Other grains such as wheat, rye, oats, and sorghum plus additional heritage grains when malted gives you addition beer styles and flavors. It is the building block on which brewers build beer. There are other grains that can be used and we begin to malt those as the company grows. But first things first.

The malting process takes tanks, water and heat to create the perfect product. It used to be done only in the fall and winter when the temperatures were just right. Now we can do it all year long. Our barley and grains will be ready by July. That gives us just enough time to get the facility ready, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

With the benefits of being local we have a great advantage to sell our products. And speaking with the local brewers we have some malts sold already and confidence is high the rest will go fast. We can eventually custom malt for special orders. That is pretty cool. We have barley, wheat and cereal rye. The designs are ready for the equipment and a floor plan set. Now we just need to fill in the blanks. So we are looking towards you to help buy two tanks, buy some stainless pipes, help with the build out and manufacture the newly designed equipment and a shovel (Okay, just seeing if you’re paying attention), and even buy some lab equipment if we over top our goal. People are ready to go to cut the concrete, weld the stainless, and turn on the lights.

In the future when we open the farm house brewery we will be brewing with our own grains but we would like to brew a few test batches on the small home system or have others test it with us. We have a small 3.5 bbl brew system sitting in a barn waiting for a home to produce great beer from our own malts. You can check out our website to see the styles and beers that we like to make, www.zsbarrelhouse.com  Our test batches will be made with our own grain so other brewers can see what can be done with them and you can taste them too. It is so amazing to think about that a small grain can have such an huge impact on an growing industry.

We have a portion of the capitalization already done but need more to help buy the equipment, set it up and get it ready to go. A $35,000 grant was written to help determine the most viable varieties of barley and how they grow on Long Island. The hunt has been on for a building and there are a few that look good and are being discussed but the right  fit is needed.

We have the equipment designed and fabricators, plumbers, electricians and tradesman ready to start. We just need your help to put us over the top. There are many levels from which you can help and I hope you can help us out. We are looking to fund the equipment purchases that will be capable of malting up to 2 tons a week. The building will need to be transformed from an open space to a homey factory producing malts for not only the brewer but home use and bakeries. Remember without malted grains there would not be any beer or spirits.

Check out the slide show that sums up what we are looking to do and why.

That is the simple truth. We are not only working to get the business going but are working to start an industry, preserve farming, create a sustainable industry, keep food and beer local and be environmentally focused. If you have any questions please let me know. Have a great day! i hope that you enjoyed reading about the project and it prompted you to help.

Risks and challenges

They are many but they can be overcome. It is a new idea and industry for this little island of ours so explaining what we want to do to the local officials has been difficult. It is also a concern to get the right building in the right area. Real estate brokers are an a little confused about exactly what we do. It is an agricultural crop that is weather and time dependent. That is why we are starting out with a small field and plan to expand in the future. Barley is a tricky crop to grow and needs special care in our humid environment. There are diseases and outside factors that can create a crop failure but we are working with the experts to lesson that chance. We need to get a building and pass all of the government regulations, which there are plenty, before the crop is harvested. The other challenges can be overcome with an organized approach to the setup and development of the plan.
