We're developing a hybrid world for you to touch magical space bubbles, feel a cool breeze of 1s and 0s, and fall down a digital rabbit hole with us
AVRA is an immersive wonderland that creates new ways to interact with inanimate objects and everyday surfaces. In this world, walls become canvases for masterpieces, tabletops become pianos, and fans churn out streams of candy colored bubbles.
We want to welcome you to escape reality and join us for a night complete with music, art, cocktails, and the opportunity to explore this hybrid world.
We’ve worked really hard to construct this virtual world and need your support to fund the full development of AVRA into an experience that can be shared with others.
And if you're in the New York area, consider pledging to our project by choosing the ticket reward option to secure your spot.
So what is this AVRA thing?
AVRA exists as a prototype. With limited funds (we're on graduate school student budgets after all) we've been using our department's VR room, and building the space out of whatever props we can find (we've snuck out about 20 carpet samples from Home Depot!).
Play with wind
Hide and seek
Peek through the floor
With your help, we want to raise enough money to build AVRA as a glass room in the middle of a gallery space. We'll also build the props in the room as well (though we do like our pilfered carpet swatches), and create a space that is more intentionally interactive.
Here's what people who have tried out our prototype have said:
"Whoa." ~ Angel
"Your project changed my life... I almost cried." ~ Heba
"I felt like a child exploring the world." ~ Fei Liu
"Nothing felt like I expected, or moved like I expected. It was like being in an extremely tactile and unusual playground." ~ Jenny
A two-day tangible VR pop-up in New York
You show up to the space. There is a gallery area with mirror art, music, drinks, and interesting people hanging out. You check in, and once your appointment is ready, you get fitted with a VR headset and experience AVRA.
Once that's over, you're free to hang out! We're hoping to raise enough money to be able to add an extra thing — a presentation, performance, or something else — at the end of each night to wrap up the party.
What your pledge would fund
Our goal is to have a two-day event in New York, but if we reach our stretch goals we will be able to exhibit AVRA in other cities as well. Your pledge will help us pay for:
- Renting out a space big enough to build a room in, and have an open area for an exhibit
- Collaborate with artists to create an showcase of art in the gallery area
- Drinks and snacks for pop-up attendees
- Props to create the experience inside the room
- Furniture for the waiting area
Who we are
Hi! We're Nour and Janel, two designers and students who are exploring how technology can change the ways we perceive the world around us. Industrial designers by training, we're now harnessing the potential of digital art to go beyond what is possible in the physical world.
Why are we doing this
AVRA is our most ambitious VR project yet. We want to go bigger than our current prototype, but we can't afford to rent a space large enough to create the experience we want. With your support, we could get an event space for a weekend and have a big party where people can experience AVRA in person.
$5 ~ A digital thank you
You'll receive our undying gratitude! We'll credit you on our website and in materials related to the project.
$10 ~ The project soundtrack
We're working with musician Firas Abou Fakher, composer and guitarist for Mashrou Leila, to develop a custom soundscape for our project. Back us at the $10 amount and you'll get to download these tracks.
$15 ~ Stickers!
We've designed stickers for VR headsets like Google Cardboard or Oculus Rift. No more boring boxes!
$25 ~ Producer Your name will be added to the VR environment.
$30 ~ Early Bird Tickets (NYC event) We're only selling 10 of these at this price, so act fast!
$40 ~ Regular event ticket (NYC event) Come to our party and experience AVRA first-hand! We're limited to 40 people a day.
$60 ~ Executive Producer
Your face will be on one of the bubbles so your friends can hit them and your name will be on the Executive Producer list.
$80 ~ Name Explosion
We'll take your name (or a name of your choice) and create a 3D model of it, then explode it! This can be a cool gif or video to put in your own videos, on your website, as an email signature, or as a gift for someone.
$125 ~ Pre-Screener
You will be one of 10 people that will test the new AVRA experience before anyone else! We'll invite you to try out our setup a month before the event, where you'll give us feedback and suggestions on what to add to the experience, and how to improve it.
$250 ~ Virtual Reality Workshop for Kids Age 6-12 / 13-17 It's the future of storytelling! We want to inspire the next generation of creative technologists. Together we will co-design a 360 degree virtual reality experience based on a story we all create. Everyone who participates will get a Google Cardboard to take home.
$1,000 ~ Sponsor
Be an official sponsor of our event! We'll embed your logo into the VR experience in a way that won't disrupt the art.
$1,500 ~ A customized room for you (NYC only) We will take a room in your house or business and set up a VR experience where visitors can touch what they see.
$6,000 ~ Bring the event to your city (US only!) We will recreate this even in your city! As long as you're in the continental United States, we'll find a venue, bring our gear, and throw another party!
[we'll include renderings / illustrations of our rewards]
We're based in New York, and so our main goal is to throw a party here in the city.
If we raise $15,000 ~ We'll be able to build two rooms so that people can experience AVRA at the same time. We'll also explore a multiplayer mode!
If we raise $35,000 ~ We'll take our party to Los Angeles so backers on the West Coast can try it out.
If we raise $50,000+ ~ You, our backers, will get to vote for one city anywhere in the world for us to take AVRA to in 2018.
Special thanks to Angel, Bentley, Fei, Jenny, JiYoung, Heba, Sean, Jerome, Will, Matt, Sarah, Gama, and our classmates at SVA.
Risks and challenges
This is our first major VR project, and so the experience might be rough around the edges in parts. People have been enjoying our prototypes, and we hope you will too. The more money we raise, the better we can make the experience (by hiring people to help go over our code, and being able to dedicate more time to the project ourselves).
We have an idea of which space we want to rent for the main event, but that may change based on how much money we raise, availability of the space at the time of the event, and weather.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
