About this project
One Die to rule them all!
Meta Dice are 16mm PolyEurea plastic etched dice designed to be compatible with a variety of pen & paper RPGs. These dice can, for instance, double as Fudge/Fate dice and regular d6. They can also be used with games such as Burning Wheel, Mouse Guard, Torchbearer, the FU RPG, Dying Earth, Ubiquity, Prince Valiant, Story Engine, Foreign Element, and countless others that use a success/failure dynamic.
The hit locations correspond with those used in the Warhammer 40k RPGs, the older Warhammer Fantasy RPG, Reign, the OD&D supplement 'Blackmoor,' and many, many others. Heck, more limber people could use these for a really complex game of Twister!
The dice colors available are red, blue, green, yellow, ivory, and black.
At the top quadrant of the dice you will find standard d6 numbers.
On the left quadrant is a simple success/failure symbol, usable for any RPG that uses a 50/50 split of success or failure, usually in dice pool systems such as Burning Wheel and Mouse Guard. These symbols can also function as a d2 or a simple coin flip.
On the right quadrant you will find Fate/Fudge symbols, as well as a 'neutral' symbol. There are two "+" symbols, two "-" symbols, and two "•" symbols. These can also be used as qualifiers, acting as and or but. These symbols can also function as d3.
On the bottom quadrant are hit locations corresponding to Head, Torso, Left Arm, Right Arm, Left Leg, and Right Leg.
Three Types of Meta Dice
There are three variations of Meta Dice you can pledge for. Each one of them is etched. The first is the Unpainted variety. With the exception of the ivory die, the details on the unpainted dice are still relatively easy to see. You can easily paint them yourself using paint markers found at most office supply stores.
The second is the Pro-Paint version. Also etched, these dice are painted with highly resilient paint in one color, all by the pros at Custom Dice, Inc. These dice take longer to produce but are well worth it! They also show up better than unpainted dice, especially in dim lighting.
The third variety is the Dual-Paint Ivory version. These ivory dice use two different color paints. Black paint is used for sides 1-3, while red paint is used for sides 4-6. This pattern makes it easier to quickly eyeball rolls of 'failure' and 'success.' They are also well suited for play with The One Ring RPG, where players occasionally need to discard results of 1, 2, and 3.
Design Your Games Using Meta Dice
It is my hope that you will design your own games that use any or all facets of these dice. Let me know when you do -- I would love to see what you dream up!
Included with every order of Meta Dice is a pdf of my Red Mists RPG, a sword & sorcery game designed specifically to use these dice. The game has been play tested and revised several times, but you will get a chance to add your 2 cents to its development as the game undergoes a final round of play testing after this project is funded. You will receive the beta pdf as soon as funding is complete. The final pdf version of 'Red Mists' will arrive with the actual dice. You may get a peek at the game here.
$3500 Every order receives one extra die of the same type they pledged for!
$5000 Every order receives a total of two extra dice of the same type they pledged for!
$10,000 Every order receives a total of four extra dice of the same type they pledged for AND I will create a new design that replaces hit locations with something you get to vote on! You will receive a free copy of this new die along with your pledged dice. This may add time to the delivery of all dice, possibly up to a month.
Risks and challenges
While this is my first Kickstarter project, the dice themselves have already been designed and created. After several prototypes were made, the final versions can be seen in the pictures provided. The dice are being carved and produced by Custom Dice, Inc., a professional dice manufacturer since 2001. The only risks are Acts of God at this point. Even the Red Mists RPG included with the dice has been finished, complete with commissioned artwork.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
