Something new is coming to the neighborhood this summer, and we need your help opening our doors!

Nearly three years ago, Second Harvest Food Bank opened Providence Restaurant, a unique social enterprise to continue the training of and giving employment to our culinary school graduates. Building off the incredible success of the restaurant, we are excited to announce our Providence's newest venture: Providence Kitchen!

Providence Kitchen, located on the first floor of the BB&T building, will be at the heart of downtown Winston-Salem and our city center’s first dine-for-a cause restaurant--putting the compassion and neighborliness that the Twin City is known for on display.

We love downtown Winston-Salem. We love it for work. We love it for play. We love it for the arts and innovation that have helped put our city on the map. We also love what downtown represents. We love that it belongs to all of us and that it is a place that people from all over Winston-Salem can meet and learn from each other.

Just as a city’s downtown can create connectivity, so can food. Our Providence Kitchen will be a café-style eatery, serving breakfast and lunch with a twist on casual farm-to-fork cuisine, with classic options like our Black Tie Burger--a favorite at Providence Restaurant--as well as some brand new menu items, served exclusively at the Kitchen. But beyond a good meal, Providence Kitchen will truly be a place where you can be a good neighbor.

Graduates will have the opportunity to work at Providence Kitchen, continuing their education alongside seasoned chefs in a real work environment, while earning a living wage. In addition to learning the front and back of the house, our residents will receive barista training at this location-- developing opportunities for their future.

At Providence Kitchen you are not only eating well, you are also supporting the education of and living wages for neighbors who are working hard to move out of poverty in a lasting way. Your cup of coffee provides dignity. Your sandwich helps to break the stubborn chains of generational poverty. Your soup helps fill the bowls of your neighbors with opportunity.

How Kickstarter Works:

If you're familiar with Kickstarter, you know that we don't get any money at all unless we reach our $30,000 goal. Because of that we kept the goal low, but we'd love to raise even more--so don't be shy! We believe Providence Kitchen is a good investment of our neighbor’s money. We’re fortunate that we will not have to make any capital investment in the Facilities thanks to the generosity of BB&T. However, we do need our neighbors' help with  start-up funds to open our doors.

Providence Kitchen will be another opportunity to “dine for a cause” and the first of its kind in downtown Winston. We invite YOU to be part of bringing it to life. Again, your pledge will only be drawn from your account if we reach the goal; otherwise, you will not be charged. In other words, if this campaign is successful, then we will open our doors… and YOU will be the first neighbor that we invite in.

Won't you be our neighbor?

Risks and challenges

At Providence, we have a track record of changing lives through culinary training. For over ten years, we have changed lives and bettered people's socioeconomic standing through culinary training. Starting with our 13 week program, which has helped over 700 graduates obtain skills and jobs, we expanded to our residency program housed at Providence Restaurant nearly three years ago. Our residency program provides up to two years of training, allowing residents to earn while they learn. Upon matriculation, our residents gain jobs making $13.50 per hour or more-- and we know that matters! Providence Kitchen will be the newest training ground for our residents.

In our more than a decade of experience, we've learned that helping our neighbors lift themselves out of poverty is hard work. It also takes time and investment. But we think our neighbors in Winston-Salem are worth it. We think we are worth it.

At Second Harvest and Providence, we know that running a restaurant, any restaurant, requires hard work and lots of resources-- after all, we have taken this risk before! Add in a training component and individuals who have traditionally been considered "difficult to employ" and you might say we have a recipe for failure. Or you could read that recipe and see something else: you could see the type of city we truly want to be.

We know we're up for the challenge. And we hope that you are, too.

What we've learned in the last 2 and a half years at Providence Restaurant uniquely prepares us for the challenges ahead. With neighbors like you on our side, we're confident we can make an already amazing program even better.

Our neighbors are worth the risk.
