MIKS © - The Language Domino Game

It all started with a school project. We were bachelor students 2 years ago, and had a linguistics course in which we had to create something that could improve the mutual understanding between related languages. Scandinavian languages in this case. English was replacing the usage of their monther tongue during their interactions. Danes, Norwegians, Swedes and Icelanders couldn't understand each other while they did few generations ago. We realised that english was everywhere around them: TV shows, magazines, and so on. English is fine, but they weren't using their own language between them any more. People could learn their neighbouring languages one after the other, but they don't need it, since their languages are so similar. They just need to be exposed to them more often. That their similarities and differences could be simply explained and shown by other means than reading old books from the last century.

Educational games were the solution to us. And we worked through this simple idea: Making language learning and teaching simple, less boring and more interactive. Whether it is between scandinavian languages or slavic languages, such as Czech and Slovak, or even north and south Korean, and many others. They used to understand each other a few decades ago. But they no longer do so for political, geographic or cultural reasons. They are no longer exposed to each other. Even though political and cultural measures have been taken to improve the situation, no concrete work tools have reached classrooms or homes.

MIKS©, has been created with that purpose in mind. Why can’t we make a domino game where numbers are replaced by words of different/similar languages ? And make them correspond to each other as we normally do with numbers. Yes, we can. And we did so. That idea was simple, yet incredibly efficient. No need to explain the rules, dominos were already embeded in everyone’s mind. So how do we proceed ?

  • By choosing words that are relevant enough to be on the dominos. Words that have just this or that syllabus different from a language to another. Include false friends.
  • Arrange them by themes like Nature, Family, Body parts,... 3 themes per game.
  • Place them on the dominos, one language per brick, 4 languages max in each game for obvious playing convinience.
  • And by creating an algorithm so that similar combinations doesn’t occur.
  • Lastly, fabricate the game using cartons, wood and foam boards and cut from 67 to 91 domino bricks depending on the version.

So in january of this year, and with the blessing of the Nordic Council and our university, we have started our own business, AE Spill i Norden, without any funds and just launched our website ( www.spillinorden.com ). Creating our games out of wood boxes and foam boards. And investing our pocket money worked just fine in the beginning. Although we're already getting some orders from schools and from the Nordic Council itself, which is great, foam boards aren't really qualitative. Plus it is very fragile and children should be able to handle them without breaking them. And it takes a lot of time to cut each piece straight with an utility knife. But fortunately we have upgrading ideas. We want to print the dominos on colored acrylic or wood sheets and carve the domino bricks, which would make the game stronger and aesthetic. We could have different colors and editions, and so on. And the look would be more professional and qualitative.

We need a 4000€ funding to buy an acrylic/wood printer and a CNC 3D carver to cut all the domino bricks (+ a simple laser printer to transfer our images & logos on the wooden box). In a long term perspective, we gain time, save money and increase our production – we could take more orders. Invest that money to grow bigger and make other type of educational games for other purposes or languages. Plus the selling prices will lessen.

The MIKS graphic chart and rules has been copyright protected in 125 countries since 2014. AE Spill i Norden is a Startup company created in Paris, in january 2015. Two people are working on fabricating the game. We have a team that work on other games that will come out on our website very soon. And an english version button will be added to the website for people that are not from the nordic countries. The founder of the MIKS and the chief of the Startup is David Phan.

Risks and challenges

There aren't that much risks. Not more than other artisanal projects. We already know our clients and potential clients. We just need this help to speed up the process, and grow professional.

We already have orders from the Europeen Commission (Belgium) and the from Language Coordination Council from the Nordic Council. We just want to turn professional.
