About this project
What is Cheesonomics?
Cheesonomics is a cheesy original card game for 2-5 players ages 8 and up that takes about 20-30 minutes to play. It is a strategic set collecting, memory-based, hand management card game based on controlling and manipulating the supply and demand of various types of cheese from cheese markets throughout North America or Europe.
- Churn the right colors or animal types of cheese from opponents' hands to seize the supply of cheese!
- Produce the market's most demanded colors of cheese to milk the most profit!
- Sell the most of each kind of animal cheese to secure end game bonuses and earn the most curd cash by selling different colors of produced cheese at high market prices!
Extra Sharp Expansion Add-On Update!
The Extra Sharp Expansion of Cheesonomics is now available as an add-on for all backers. Please add $6 to your total pledge for each copy of the Extra Sharp Expansion you wish to order. Example: If you are ordering 2 copies of Cheesonomics and want 2 Extra Sharp Expansions (one for each box), you would add $12 ($6 per copy) to your existing pledge for the base games. The expansion cards and tray are already designed to fit inside the same base game box!
The $6 add-on price is good until the campaign funds on March 31st. The price will be $8 per copy for the general public after the Kickstarter campaign ends. If you are a backer and wish to add on the expansion after funding when we send out surveys, you will need to include a 4% surcharge for the additional PayPal payment you would make at that time. If you want to avoid the 4% PayPal surcharge when adding on the expansion you can by adding the amount to your pledge now!
The Extra Sharp Expansion introduces 25 unique new cheese wedge cards (growth hormones, organic cheese and smelly cheese wedges) that introduce an entirely new (and sharper) layer of strategy to Cheesonomics. Now you must also decide whether or not the quantity or quality of cheese will produce the most profit! Check out the rules here to see if this flavor is for you!
If we hit the $16,000 stretch goal before funding, this expansion will still be included at no additional cost only for Kickstarter backers. The expansion will be sold separately for non-Kickstarter customers after the campaign ends. See below for the Extra Sharp Expansion artwork.
Meet Dale Tolley, Designer of Cheesonomics:
What's Special about the Box?
Cheesonomics was designed to celebrate the cheese industry and leading producers of cheese in both Europe and North America, hence the two different editions we are seeking to produce. The box was designed to mimic an authentic, wax-dipped cheese wheel. As a result, the box for each edition is cylindrical and made to look like you're opening up a fancy, wrapped wheel of vintage imported cheese!
The box interior has also been designed with special inserts and spacing in mind to allow a snug fit of the pieces and to keep them relatively secure as well. Not only that, but the relatively compact size of the box and the design of its layout should make it easier to play Cheesonomics on the road! The game itself as well as the box and components were all designed to bring to life the experience of churning, producing and selling cheese! Even the game's nutritional value and ingredients (components) will be proudly displayed on the side of the box for reference:
Although the Percent Daily Value is based on a 1 game per day diet on the label, who really only ever eats 1 suggested serving? While 1 game of Cheesonomics may satisfy your gaming craving for a day, there's no such thing as too much fun, so feel free to indulge!
Cheesonomics "Aged" Rules
More Choices, Same Great Taste!
Cheesonomics is easily enjoyed by all ages of cheese lovers. In fact, you can play the flavor of Cheesonomics that suits your taste! The sharper the flavor, the older the cheese and recommended age (or sharpness) of players. For your first time, consider using the "mild" or base game rules, then sample sharper rules as you master the principles of Cheesonomics:
- Mild - You prefer cheese simple yet satisfying: Cheesonomics Mild is for feta-favoring families learning the fundamentals of churning cheese into profit. It includes all the basic rules of play that you can learn and teach others quickly so you can stop talking about cheese and start playing with it!
- Sharp - You crave complexity and control of your cheese: Cheesonomics Sharp is for Gouda gorging gamers who want the option of further manipulating and milking the cheese markets.
- Extra Sharp - Your appetite for opportunity is insatiable: Cheesonomics Extra Sharp is an expansion for Edam-eating experts who, on top of everything else, welcome the added challenge of focusing on either the quality or quantity of their cheese. The Extra Sharp Expansion to Cheesonomics is our first stretch goal including 25 new cheese wedge cards. See below for details and updates about Cheesonomics' stretch goals.
Each cheese-producing country or state has a unique pride about its world class product, and so we intend to encourage this friendly competition through the production of both the North American and European editions of Cheesonomics. Both editions feature red, yellow, orange, blue, green, cow, sheep, goat, yak and reindeer cheese, but with different states or countries spotlighted from which they can be produced and sold.
Many of the cards and pieces in Cheesonomics were designed as wedges to promote the creation of various cheese wheels throughout the game. This both helps reinforce the theme of cheese production and facilitates easy viewing and placement of pieces on the table when playing space is limited. The unique wedge shape of the cards also creates the opportunity to learn creative new ways to shuffle cheese that will be discussed in updates to backers directly from the designer!
The European edition features France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Scandinavia.
The North American edition features Wisconsin, California, New York, Oregon and Canada.
Dale's Designer Dairy Diary
Excerpt from Cheesonomics' Designer Dale Tolley's Dairy Diary:
I’m passionate about cheese. I would argue that most people like cheese. Cheese goes with pretty much everything. Just try to name something that isn’t immediately improved by adding cheese. If you actually just spent the time thinking of something that isn’t immediately improved by adding cheese, then you need a break from the internet. Why not spend the next half hour mastering the exciting world of cheese production? Why not play a game all about making cheese while munching on cheese crackers covered in even more cheese? Why not add a little extra cheese to your game nights?
Cheese is a tasty wedge of almost every culinary culture. When I see pictures of cheese markets with thousands of varieties of cheese stacked and smelling to high heaven, I am left in salivating awe. Sure, some of them are meant to be nasty. How did society ever get to the point where we started letting hairy animals’ milk sit around, festering with billions of bacteria, congealing into a mouth-coating mass—and then we started eating it? I’d like to meet the guy who first gazed upon rotting milk, and before his peasants threw it out onto the streets with the sewage, waved his hands wildly about for them to stop, beseeching them to hear out his wild idea for a new delicacy. Good for that guy—and those peasants, for not throwing out that milk.
The sheer number of unique ingredients, recipes, aging and moisturizing techniques that have developed ever since those peasants spared that spoiling milk is simply mind boggling! Truly there is an art to getting the ideal animal’s milk to curdle in exactly the right way in the perfect atmospheric conditions for just the right amount of time. The texture and color and flavor are all essential considerations in producing the perfect cheese experience that will complement the rest of an exotic meal. One must inevitably walk the tightrope between delight and disgust when making a cheese that will move nations!
Ever since the milky concepts first began to curdle into prototype pieces, Cheesonomics has been a game about mastering the pungent world of cheese-making and expanding your global culinary fame—and all this from the dining room table!
-Dale Tolley, Designer of Cheesonomics

We have a few very exciting stretch goals planned for once we reach and exceed our initial funding goal, including the Extra Sharp expansion to the Mild and Sharp flavors of Cheesonomics that are already included in the base game.
Once we hit our first stretch goal of $16,000, The Extra Sharp Expansion of Cheesonomics will be included FREE in every Kickstarter copy of Cheesonomics for all of our backers! This expansion will be included at no additional cost only for Kickstarter backers and will be sold separately for non-Kickstarter customers after the campaign ends. See above under Game Overview for the Extra Sharp Expansion artwork. We will post an updated video and expansion rules after we have passed our initial funding goal and are on our way to meeting the $16,000 stretch goal.
Stay tuned for updates on more exciting additions we have planned for our generous backers! In the mean time, take a look at the Cheesonomics rules to get a comprehensive feel for how the game plays:

Risks and challenges
We stand by our products, but sometimes issues do happen. Please contact our customer service with regard to any such issues within 90 days of receiving your copy of Cheesonomics. We pride ourselves on exceptional and speedy customer service.
Shipping issues are relatively uncommon, but they do sometimes occur, especially when shipping to destinations outside of the US. We will provide tracking to international backers when possible. We cannot guarantee that there will not be shipping problems, as we cannot guarantee the service and reliability of the various postal/delivery services involved around the world. You will have to assume that risk along with us.
Gryphon Games (and its affiliate Eagle Games) have completed and delivered on over 24 Kickstarter projects to date, with many more Gryphon and Eagle Games currently in various stages of production and delivery. The Game Designer's Toolkit is now in stock in our warehouse, and has already shipped to most Backers (a February delivery date was projected and we delivered on time or ahead of this). Dawn: Rise of the Occulites is currently in production in China. We expect it to be shipped from China in April as projected and delivered to Backers in April or May (as projected). And Defenders of the Realm: Minions has completed most of its printing in China and we are now waiting for plastic miniatures to be completed. Backers have been notified by Updates that we expect shipping from China in April/May and fulfillment in May/June. We had initially hoped for a February delivery. We deliver on our promises reliably and usually on time (the very few delays we have had were related to production issues which we have only, at best, partial control over).
To put it simply, you will get everything you are promised when you pledge to one of our Kickstarter Projects, and it will be delivered to you in as timely a manner as possible. Thank you again for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Backers in the continental US must add $5 per copy of the game ordered ($15 for Canadian backers) to help defray shipping costs (not cover them). Backers in the EU, where the game costs us more in VAT and Customs, the MSRP is higher as a result and so is the internal shipping (the $10 added per copy of the game helps us to defray costs but again certainly does not cover them). The same follows for Australian backers (please add $18 USD for the first copy you order and $15 for any subsequent copies) and International Backers elsewhere in the world (please add $30 USD for the first copy you order and $15 for any subsequent copies). We have tried to be as clear and transparent as possible in our statements. In all cases, please double check the Shipping Terms chart near the bottom of the page for your total costs when pledging.
