About this project
Do you listen to music in the shower, by the pool, or outside? Or maybe you would like to be able to text, answer calls, write down important information you think of, watch videos or do anything else while your in said environments? If you do then you need protection to keep your smartphone or tablet safe from the steam, water, and dirt. So to fulfill such a need I created The Bullseye Bag, a protective bag that can be hung in landscape or portrait orientation anywhere you like.
The idea was spawned from having to change songs while I was in the shower. Sometimes I would want to re-listen to a song after it had played and other times the song would have a very long intro or outro sequence I would want to bypass, but no matter how much I would try to dry my hands and arms before leaving the shower area the water would always run back down my arm onto the phone and the water from my body would soak the floor.
Bluetooth is currently the go-to technology for music speakers paired with smart devices. Even if you don't currently own any Bluetooth speakers, there has been major developments in the Bluetooth receiver field, some of them available through Kickstarter, to make most speakers Bluetooth ready. Not interested in any of these? Well The Bullseye Bag is still perfect for you because the case gives you great audio quality straight from your smart device directly in the bathtub area.
1) The Bullseye Bag
The Bullseye bag is made of very thick clear plastic, over 5x thicker than the average sandwich bag, that is puncture resistant but still allows full touch functionality. They utilize a positive snap Ziploc®- type closure making them easy to use yet still very secure. The bags come in two sizes, the 7.5" x 4", with internal dimensions of about 6.5" x 3.8", Bullseye Bag for smartphones and the 11.5" x 8.5", with internal dimensions of about 10.5" x 8.3", Bullseye Bag for tablets. Almost all smartphones and tablets in most protective cases should fit comfortably in The Bullseye Bags.
2) The Smart Hook
The Smart Hook is just an unassuming white plastic hook on the surface, but on the back is some of the strongest tape known to man. This small hook, 2" x 1", is able to hold up to 10 lbs comfortably. Why would you need it to hold up to 10 lbs? Because excessive isn't a word when dealing with such expensive and personal electronics, and I wouldn't want a slight accidental tug bringing it down. Also the tape is impervious to the humidity and temperature changes of any spot whether inside or outside. The Smart Hooks come in a pack of 10 so you have all the hooks you should need for multiple locations.
Along with hooks on the market not being able to rival the strength of the Smart Hook, they also aren't suited for the humidity and temperature changes accompanied with a shower area device. After a lot of research and trial & error I found what I think is the perfect answer in vhb-type tape. It's arguably the strongest tape available, yet still able to be removed easily with widely available commercial solvents such as Goo Gone. VHB tape is even used to hold together buildings. Don't believe me? Check out this amazing stuff in the video below.
The truth is there is an endless array of uses for The Bullseye Bag and Smart Hook. Some of the more useful ones I have thought of are, using your smartphone next to you while watching your tablet (pictured below), using the your smart device by the pool, at the beach or outside, using the smart device while going to the bathroom without getting germs on the device itself, using the smart device in a sauna, etc.
I have done extensive searching and sourcing to find the best American manufacturer available with the best manufacturing capabilities for my products. After all the emails and phone conversations, I have chosen Bardes Plastic Inc. because they have the reputation and facilities that can accommodate any size order I may receive. They are a commercial plastics manufacturer that specializes in reclosable plastic bags. I knew that I wanted to use an American manufacturer over an international manufacturer because while American manufacturers may charge more, they are committed to the product quality excellence and accountability that I hold myself to. They also cut down on the wait time and potential hassles associated with international communication and shipping. Products like The Bullseye Bag and the Smart Hook must each be perfect and I will have them as thoroughly inspected as possible, by me and a team of friends and family, before shipping to you to ensure they are ready for use.
The Story, Development, & Post Success
November 2012 - I came up with the idea of hanging protective bags inside the shower area, originally devising a system that hung from inside the shower curtain. I subsequently designed and patented such a system and then sourced manufacturers.
December 2012/January 2013 - After some tinkering with prototypes I realized utilizing the inner side of the shower curtain severely limited the versatility, especially concerning watching the device and using the device anywhere you like, that could be obtained from just simply offering a hook. Like I mentioned above, the key was finding the right adhesive to not damage the walls and be usable in places where nails and screws can't go, yet still have unrivaled strength.
February 2013 - I created the designs and had prototypes made by a local plastics shop.
March 2013 - I made the finalized designs and contacted the best plastics manufacturers I could find. After a lot of back and forth communication I decided on who I feel has the best ability to manufacturer my products.
June/July 2013 - I am offering the product to Kickstarter to raise initial funding capital and gauge potential interest.
July/August 2013 - If the project is successful then I will gather all necessary information and then place the order with the manufacturer.
August/Early September 2013 - As the products are being made I will keep everyone updated with any information I know including when the order is completed by the manufacturer and when I have it in my hands. When I know something, you'll know something.
September/ Early October - The bags and hooks will be finished and sent to me from the manufacturer. My team of friends and family will inspect them as much as possible in a reasonable time frame to ensure they are ready to go. If everything is good then I will happily send them out to you guys so you can enjoy them as much as I do.
Allocation of Money
In order to manufacture this product I need funding for the
- Molds and Sealing dies
- Minimum purchase order
- Amazon and Kickstarter's cut
That's what the minimum goal will cover. Any money received after that will be to purchase more inventory, marketing, and set up distribution channels.
Risks and challenges
The risks of this project are fairly straight forward, there may be a delay in manufacturing and shipping. There is really nothing I can do because these aspects are out of my hands. I have been assured the bags will be produced on time. And by using American manufacturers rather than an international one if there are any delays I can pick up the phone and try to work out any problems as quickly as possible. Shipping is generally reliable from my experience and I will do my best to having everything on my end extremely organized and handled by the shipping service as expediently as possible. The bottom line is I have done and will do everything in my power to have the products made with the highest quality and shipped as fast as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
