This year, Hammerdrone has the honour of representing Western Canada (having won 1 preliminary round, the Calgary city final and the Western Canada final) in the Canadian Final of Wacken Metal Battle Canada. It's in Toronto. We are in Calgary. A mere 40 hours drive away...we could use some help with our plane tickets!
Wacken. If you’re a metalhead, you’ve heard of it. You may not have been to it (I haven’t) but you probably want to. Properly called Wacken Open Air, it started waaaaay back in 1990 according to Wikipedia. Some 80,000 attendees take in bands across 8 stages over 3 days and nights.
One of the coolest things about Wacken, however, is the Wacken Metal Battle. Each year, around 30 nations send their representative to this, the ultimate heavy metal battle of the bands! To be chosen as your nation’s band you have to first win your national battle, which is preceded by regional or city-based finals and heats. So it’s no mean feat. Since it started participating in 2013, Canada has done remarkably well (no surprise to any of us familiar with the wealth of talent in the metal scene of the frozen north); in fact, a Canadian band has won twice (congratulations to Crimson Shadows (2013) and Vesperia (2015)) and 2016 saw Profaner come second (congrats to them, too!). That’s three podium finishes in 4 attempts (Canada had a by-year in 2017). Pretty impressive, given this is the metal equivalent of the Olympics!
We hope to be the next Canadian band in Wacken, but we need to get to Toronto first!
