Nowhereisland: The Book

First mock-up of the book.
First mock-up of the book.

In 2004 artist Alex Hartley discovered an Arctic island that had been revealed from within the melting ice of a retreating glacier. He was the first human to set foot on this new land. Seven years later that island journeyed south to the UK through International Waters and was declared a new nation. It arrived on the coast of England for the London 2012 Olympics and began its search for new citizens.

Now you can become a part of creating a permanent legacy of Nowhereisland's incredible story, from the island's discovery in the High Arctic through to the dispersal of the island's territory amongst it's 23,000 citizens worldwide.

NOWHEREISLAND: the book, will hold every aspect of the project: from exploring the origins of the island and the artist's endeavours to claim the territory from Norway, through its controversial declaration as a new nation, its encounters along the 500-mile perilous journey around the South West coast of England and the story of its 23,000 citizens who collectively wrote its constitution.

Edited by producer Claire Doherty and artist Alex Hartley, with written contributions by Jeffrey Kastner and Professor Tim Creswell, and designed by award-winning graphic designer Fraser Muggeridge.

This Kickstarter campaign offers the opportunity to invest in the book and receive one of several offers including; a unique artwork, a limited edition artwork or a poster by Alex Hartley.

  •  Pledge 7

In return for £3500 you will receive a one of a kind artefact taken from the final act of Nowhereisland's dispersal in September 2012: the original piece of Nowhereisland that artist Jay Clement and Alex Hartley sent to the very edge of space. Salvaged from the island at the end of its journey, we sent this small piece of Arctic rock into the upper stratosphere 36,000m above the earth.

As part of this action, Arctic dust from the island was dispersed into the upper atmosphere to remain there forever, but this piece of Nowhereisland was recovered with GPS tracking after its return to earth. This unique piece of art history is offered here as our top fundraising option. The rock is one-of-a-kind, and will be framed over a photograph of itself at the edge of space, signed and dated by the artist. it will be accompanied by supporting certification including photographic and video evidence of its extraordinary excursion. You also get the book of course!

Risks and challenges

We have a firm offer in place from renowned publisher Hatje Cantz to produce the book. We have commissioned the writers and designer, and we obviously have all the images and stories from the expedition and from Nowhereisland's journey. The risk remains that we don't quite achieve our fundraising target, as the costs to make the publication are fixed. We are however confident we can raise the necessary funds to produce this book, and we have previously undertaken successful production and distribution on this scale. We have always had an incredible response from the 23,000 citizens of Nowhereisland across the world.
...... So lets join forces again and see what we can achieve!
