LITTLE WOODS tells the story of two women living in an oil boomtown in North Dakota. In towns like these, men out number women nearly 2 to 1, housing is exorbitant, crime rates are rising, wait times at hospitals and emergency clinics are weeks long and many people fall through the cracks. When we meet the women in our story they are risking life and limb to illegally sneak across the border into Canada for a life or death medical procedure.
The feature, LITTLE WOODS, is one of the 12 projects chosen for the 2015 Sundance Screenwriters Lab. The short, for which we are fundraising here on Kickstarter, is a way for us to tackle the story creatively in a different format. We wanted to not only provide a short-form glimpse into this world but also show how interesting, engaging and pertinent stories like these are.
Some of the people making LITTLE WOODS include the writer/director Nia DaCosta, producer Carrie Fleming, director of photography Alexandra Stergiou, and our cast of Kate Bolger, Carrie Fleming, Seth Cantebury, Marc Baker and Jonathan O'Reilly.
Half of the short's budget is already fundraised but we still have a ways to go. The money we raise on Kickstarter will go to the following:
Equipment rental - making sure we have everything we need to get the best looking and sounding film possible!
Location rental and permits - getting the most interesting and authentic locations.
Insurance - making sure the equipment, cast and crew are protected.
Catering - ensuring that everyone is well fed!
Travel - Car rentals and gas for getting from place to place.
Any contribution to this project would be greatly appreciated by us all! LITTLE WOODS is a project that the entire team here is incredibly passionate about and we would love it if you could help us make this film!
Risks and challenges
As an independent, short-film production the main challenge we'll face is getting everything done in time and on-budget. Collectively the cast and crew have been through every possible bad-luck-Murphy's-law scenario and to every obstacle we say, "bring it on."
But, in the case of reshoots or rescheduling we will keep all of our backers updated!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
