THE WANDERLUST PROJECT

wanderlust ˈwɒndəlʌst/ noun - 1.
a strong desire to travel.

Travel isn't just for those with money to burn. Adventure doesn't have to be an extravagant endeavour, characterised by lavish spending and hedonistic over indulgence.

Not only does travelling on the cheap mean that you can spend more time on the road and return home with less of a dent in your bank account, but in our experience choosing to rough it enriches the experience of travel and affords a sense of freedom that you'll never find in an overpriced tour bus.

By travelling with only what you can carry on your back and minimal plans in your head, you have a fuller and more intimate interaction with the places you go and the people you meet.

The aims of this project are simple:

  • To de-stigmatise cheap travel and demonstrate its merits.
  • To inspire others to follow our example and pursue adventures of their own.

Our Plan:

We're going to leave Melbourne in late January and spend approximately four weeks hitchhiking around the coast of Australia, documenting the places we go, the things we do and most importantly the people we meet - especially those who give us a lift!

We're also planning to keep a little blog going as we travel, so you can follow along if you're a backer, a friend, or a concerned relative. Find it here.

The Photo Book:

Upon our return we'll compile the best photos and stories into a high-quality, hard-cover photo book. Combining Kody's graphic design experience and Jesse's photos we hope to produce a beautiful graphic novel that will de-stigmatise cheap travel and inspire others to yield to their wanderlust.

We're really trying to keep the focus on the photos so the design will remain simple, but elegant. We'll include some explanatory text as well, most of which will be descriptive profiles of the people we meet.

For those of you who know a little about publishing; the graphic novel we're planning to create will be approximately 50 pages at 20cm x 50cm (when opened) of 170gsm, high quality paper printed with a lustre finish. We want this book to be something that will look awesome on your coffee table or desk, so we're going to give it a matte hardcover with an image wrap as well.

Travelling on the cheap:

To keep costs low we'll camp at night and prepare most of our own food. Our aim is to spend less than $25 a day each (which is probably less than what you'd spend on an average day in the city). We feel that this kind of budget is something that most people are able to afford.

A breakdown of costs:

Our $2500 goal is for production of the photo book only. Between us we'll need an additional ~$1500 to cover our travel costs, but we're happy to fund this ourselves if we only just make our funding goal. If per chance this project gets funded past 100%, we'll draw on the additional funds to help cover our travel costs (only within our $25 a day limit) and anything past that we'll put towards things that will improve the quality of our photo book - such as camera lenses.

We'll be upfront about any of the project money we spend, and we want to it be clear that we're not in this to make a profit - this project is all about our stated goals: of de-stigmatising cheap travel and inspiring others to follow our example.

A little about us:

We're both students in Melbourne that share a passion for travel and the outdoors - this trip was brainstormed over several rock climbing sessions in Burnley. Jesse works as a photographer and studies Arts at the University of Melbourne. Kody works as a DJ as well as doing some freelance design work, and is entering his final year of Design at RMIT.

On two separate trips to North America we both discovered the joy of travelling on the cheap and hitchhiking - between us we've thumbed over 15,000 km's and spent countless nights camping in the wilderness. We're both proficient campers as well as having considerable experience in our relevant fields of design and photography. In brief - we've got the resources, skills and passion to make this project happen, and we're really excited about it!

Stretch Goals (updated 5/1/13):

$4,000 - Wanderlust footage

Between us we have three cameras capable of recording 1080p video so If we reach $4,000 funding we'll put together a bit of a video of some short clips we record throughout the trip, to try give an insight into thumbing and some of the characters we meet. This won't be a feature length film, and we can't promise it'll be any good considering both of us have worked very little with video. But we can promise that it will be an honest account of the things we see and do, and if our batteries hold up, we might even be able to capture a couple of night-time-lapses in the desert. This video will be sent to every legend that has supported the project, regardless of the size of their contribution.

100 books sold - 10 extra pages

If we sell 100 copies of the Wanderlust Project we'll add an additional 10 pages to the book. As we've previously mentioned, we're making no money from this so it's only economically viable to add pages once we've hit 100 books.

A big thank-you to David Scott for composing some excellent acoustic music for the video.

Risks and challenges

1. Travel - While we believe travelling on the cheap is the way to go, it's important to acknowledge the inherent risks involved. That said, the hysteria surrounding hitch hiking is absolutely without merit and is a direct result of our xenophobic modern age. Risk is an intrinsic part of life, and it is our belief that if you're willing to ride a bike or walk home at night, you should be willing to camp and hitchhike. We'll use our common sense, carry a first aid kit and always make sure we've got a charged phone.

2. Book Production - We plan to arrive home at the end of February which gives us less than a week to get back into work and prepare for the start of university. Editing 20,000+ photos and compiling a graphic novel will be no small task and will likely take up a decent amount of our time. That said, this project is a labour of love and we'll both do everything in our power to get it together as quickly as possible and start sending it out to our backers! We think 2 months is enough time to get organised, and we'll keep our backers updated with how its all going!

3. Crocodiles - Is there any way to prepare for the existential peril that coming face to face with a soulless, 5 meter murder machine inevitably produces? Probably not. We're expecting some sleepless nights when we're up north. And we both have pocket knives.
