About this project
Young Dance Collective:
Collaboration, self expression, transformation, and friendship—Young Dance Collective was built on these cornerstones, and the result has been unlike any other in dance.
The Second Generation Continued:
Young Dance Collective (YDC) is a socially-conscious, collaborative, choreographic company for young artists devoted to artistic growth, creative development and community. Currently in its fifteenth year, YDC was founded in 2001 by then artistic director Kim Cullen and the first generation members.
This year, founding YDC member, Hannah Cullen launched her own company cullen&them and it is at this amazing moment that YDC becomes part of cullen&them representing the educational arm of this new organization while retaining it's identity as a professional performing group of young artists.
Using the fundamentals of modern dance as the basis for exploration, this group, now aged 10-13, develops new work together, collaborating on themes that express their thoughts and feelings about their lives and the world around them.
YDC focuses on dance as the artistic medium because movement breaks through boundaries in a way that other art forms do not. By nature, it is collaborative – the young dancers have to cooperate, they get close, they build trust. Beyond this, in YDC they are encouraged toward discussion with one another, and are guided in conversation by an adult who asks them what they think. This pushes them to question and understand how they can express their thoughts through the art of movement.
The Family Project
On Thursday, January 19 and Friday, January 20 at 7:30PM, cullen&them presents Young Dance Collective's The Family Project
The second generation of YDC is very excited to be presenting its second full evening of original work based on family dynamics, relationships, and ancestry at a time when there are a myriad of changes happening in these young people's individual families and in the world around them.
Please join the YDC company members at the New York Live Arts for a deeper look into this project that was presented as a work-in-process at MassMoCA last fall!

YDC is an immersive model for creative collaboration among young people interested in the arts. By working with raw, talented youth, teaching them the fundamentals of a rigorous art form, exposing them to the visual and performing arts and current cultural trends, engaging them in intellectual discussion and holding them to the high standards of a professional company, the lives of these young people, their families, and all who witness their ongoing development as artists are forever and profoundly enriched.
We are proud to be molding this new company in the spirit of the original YDC. You could say that YDC birthed cullen&them and now we have come full circle, powered by the same thrill of learning, creativity, community building and innovation.

Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges
This year in particular we have had many real challenges all relating to family, much of it around illness. Throughout it all, we have stayed close, strong and resilient. We have had numerous conversations about our subject matter to create content and to stay true to our process as we push forward.
Also, getting all of the parts together in order to turn what is now a series of fantastic movement moments into a show is a lot of work for these young artists. Seeing this process to the finish line will be a major accomplishment that we will all be tremendously proud of!
Finally, two shows at NewYork Live Arts means we have nearly 400 seats to fill. That in and of itself is a major feat that we trust all of our supporters will help us with. Thank you so much for being part of the YDC family! We could never meet these challenges without you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
