About this project
You just pack these folding chairs in your vehicle for the beach, camping, or park. When you get there, take them out of your vehicle, unfold the chair(s), configure into the wagon, attach the wheels and handle, then you're ready to go.
Gypsy Mule Wagons™ are unique in that they only take up the amount of space in your vehicle that folding beach chairs would have taken up and you get the benefit of having a durable wagon too! You can easily pack the wheel assemblies under the seats of your vehicle, the trunk, floor boards, or wherever you have a little space. Our wagon(s) effectively consolidate(s) the space taken up by a traditional wagon down to just 1 or 2 folding beach style chairs. So, "Take More, Pack Less!"
Gypsy Mule Wagons™ are a patented (with additional utility & international patents pending) unique recreational product that we intend to make in the US. Currently, we are capable of fabricating about 20% of the parts ourselves and outsourcing the remaining 80%. However, to reduce our production costs we need to get those percentages reversed to fabricating 80% in house and outsourcing 20% (or less).
...will be to get production costs down. The first thing I can do to accomplish this goal is to obtain aluminum extrusion, plastic injection, and blow mold tooling for several of the parts that are currently expensive to produce. You know how it goes, "I've got something you need and you can't make it on your own, so this is how much it's going to cost you to get it." So we want to own our own tooling and equipment. Obtaining the tooling will allow us to produce large volumes of parts cheaply, which will significantly reduce our production costs in a very short time. In addition, we are also going to invest in a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) water jet that will allow us to cut our own stainless and aluminum sheet metal at will, further reducing our production costs. We have identified a 2400 sq. ft space, which is already fitted for our electrical output needs. When developing our business plan and deciding what our project goal was going to be, we had to take into account the taxes, KS fee's, and credit cards fees that are subtracted from what we set our project goal at. That is how we know that it is going to take $130,000 to successfully launch this business and be productive. Let's get our product made in the USA. Kickstarters, you are our first customers!
****Know that you are an important part of our company's success and that you can be "Immortalized" on our website (Kickstarter Plaque on our Home Page) as a "Contributor to our Success" (Contributor to our Success = a $50 or more pledge during this Kickstarter Campaign.) As a "Contributor to our Success", you will hear from me annually with updates related to company news. Also, you will be the first to be informed of any new product prior to it's release to the general public and have an early opportunity to obtain it as well.
How does the "Single-Chair Wagon" work?
To make one chair into a wagon you just position the backrest to the full upright position and press down on the armrests to lock it into place. Fold the leg rest up so that it too is in the full upright position and lock it into the sub structure of the armrests. Slide the wheel assemblies onto each leg, pull the handle from it's storage site in the frame and adjust the handle to the proper length for your height. That's it! Your done and ready to be on your way.
· A cargo netting accessory that extends both sides of either the single or dual chair wagon from the armrest up to the top fabric weld of the backrests giving you a whole lot of room for all your stuff.
·A table to place your drink or book on. This table can go on either side of your chair depending on if you are right handed or left handed.
·We have been working on backpack straps for the folded chairs so that individual chairs may be carried on a persons back.
·If we reach our Kickstarter goal it will put us much closer to being able to offer a choice of rubber pneumatic wheels for camping and suburban neighborhood environments in addition to our blow molded plastic wheels for sandy environments. The wheels can easily be exchanged from the axle. So you can swap out the wheels depending on your need.
What frame/ material colors does it come in and can I get my logo on it?
Visit our website at www.gypsymulewagons.com or click on the links below to play around with frame color and fabric color combinations:
***The website is still under construction and nothing can be purchased from it until the business goes live.
The textiles we are using can have digital printing and UV protection applied for things like logos, tag lines, and catch phrases, etc. Ultimately, these fabrics have been chosen for their wear, resilience, and ability to tolerate many years of harsh outdoor use. We are using stainless steel grommets with the fabrics.
·The wagon consists of either one or two, well constructed, over-sized chairs. We did this to allow for a roomy chair and to have a large cargo area when the chair or chairs are transformed into the wagon.
·Folding chairs allow for easy storage and transport
·Each folding chair weighs 17lbs
·Adjustable seat height: The seats adjusts from a 10" sandy beach height to heights of 15.75", 16.75", 17.75" & 18.75" for patio & camping uses (standard seat height of a chair is generally between 17-18")
·Detachable leg-rest that features a height adjustment to match the adjusting seat height of the chair.
·Frame integrated wagon handle for easy deployment and storage.
·Telescoping wagon handle to adjust for the appropriate length of the handle related to the person's height, no more stooping to pull the wagon!
·Innovative and patent pending removable wheel assemblies
·Choice of wheel materials: Choose from either wide, durable blow molded plastic for sandy environments or rubber pneumatic wheels for camping and neighborhood environments. The wheels can easily be exchanged from the axle. So you can swap out the wheels depending on your need. **Currently, only the plastic wheels are available for this KS campaign unless we exceed our goal.
·Durable and exchangeable Patent Pending sling material design available in a variety of colors/ color patterns. Change the sling color/pattern on your chairs at will without having to drill out the rivets and take apart the frame of the chair to remove the sling. A "NEW" patent pending sling design allows you to either swap out sling designs at will or replace damaged sling material without replacing your whole chair!
·Adjustable head and neck pillow.
·Umbrella straps to attach beach umbrellas, fishing rods, or camping equipment to the front and back sides of the wagon when those items are too long to be put into the wagon
·Large rear backrest pocket with material lid to put anything you want to put in it.
What's it made of?
The frame is fabricated from 6061T6 aluminum & uses stainless steel parts to connect parts of the frame together. We have already invested in a manual tube bender that works well and will meet our needs for the near future. We say it's hand made, because we are hand bending it! We're bending the frame tubes, stainless steel axles, and front legs. We also make the smaller tooling needed to bend all of the sheet stainless steel and aluminum that is cut for us outside of the shop. We will be incorporating a variety of plastic parts that have been designed for many years of dependable, consistent and repetitive use.
A Gypsy Mule Wagon™ will arrive to the customer as a pre-assembled folding chair with pre-assembled "boot" wheel assemblies. A chair comes packaged to include the wagon handle, 4 wheel assemblies, and the leg-rest assembly. The chairs are ready for use upon delivery. In an attempt at being as green as we can, our website provides access to a video tutorial, which provides detailed instructions for the fun use of your chair(s). This convertible chair-to-wagon product was designed for ease of use and is a quality product. Assembling your chair(s) into a wagon is easy to do and it's fun watching the expression of others when you do it! We will provide 24/7 customer service through our website and are available through the website to answer any questions that you may have.
About Gypsy Ventures, Inc.
Gypsy Ventures, Inc. is a North Carolina company, formed in 2012 anticipating the launch of our wagon products. Through the production process, Gypsy Ventures, Inc. will be supporting small businesses in 5 states: North Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, Washington, and Texas. That number will possibly grow to 6 to include Florida once we kick off production. I have 2 other people that I am working with. Ty, my incredible fabricator and Val, the guy who does all of my digital graphic designs and website.
One of the goals for Gypsy Ventures, Inc. is to apply for a Local Collegiate License to try and sell these wagons through select university stores and online. For example, the frames will be one school color, while the sling material and shock cord will be another with images of the university mascot affixed to specific areas on the fabric. We feel a product like ours will do very well in university stores, vacation resorts, coastal rentals, and on the web. Students, alums, and families alike will enjoy owning this product!!
Where did I come up with the name?
I chose the name “Gypsy Mule" because of two things. The “family mule” reference humorously given to me by my family for carrying all the stuff we need, where we need it, and all in one trip, if possible. I added "Gypsy" to the name because this wagon can go anywhere and I really liked the way it sounded.
The idea of taking a wagon on a trip was inspired through my experiences with the Y-Guides, Cub Scouts, and family beach/ camping vacations. A wagon can be a big help while on a trip. However, packing a "fixed frame" wagon takes up a lot of room in my vehicle and that was always a problem for me. Not only that, I had to have room for chairs, cooler, etc. I loved having the wagon, but wagons or carts are generally of no use to anyone once it gets your stuff to where you need it to be. Wagons and carts alike typically just sit around until it's time to pack them up again and head back in. Ultimately, I just wanted to reduce what I had to pack, but not reduce the convenience of having it all.
So, I created Gypsy Mule Wagons™! They are a great solution! My wagon concept lets you configure either one or two folding beach style chairs into a wagon. Enjoy these comfortable, reclining, lounge chairs and when you need a wagon, just configure the chair(s) into a sturdy wagon that can easily match and even out perform a "fixed frame" wagon. You are also reducing the amount of room you need in your vehicle to pack all your stuff by not having to pack both your chairs and a wagon. So, even if you typically only pack chairs with you on a vacation, you now have the option of being able to use a wagon! You will find that very handy. When you don't need the chairs or the wagon, you just fold the chairs up for easy, minimal storage. No kidding, this Gypsy Mule Wagon™ is amazing!
The Eureka Moment...
One July 4th evening, my wife and I had the family set up on the beach in anticipation of the fireworks. I had just been talking with her about how everyone seemed to be using a wagon or beach cart to get their chairs and coolers on the beach and I was saying that I wished there was a better option than what I had because it was such a pain to pack in addition to all our other stuff. As we were talking, a couple just set up their beach chairs next to us on the beach and situated them very closely together so that from our angle of sight, the front of each chair nearly touched the other. My wife said, look at how those chairs are sitting? The two chair frames together kind of looked like the frame of a wagon. I began thinking of how to make a wagon out of two chairs. When I returned home I started playing with folding beach chairs in an effort to try and create a wagon. As it turns out, it wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be, but finally got it worked out anyway. It's a great product!
Gypsy Mule Wagons™ and this Kickstarter project wouldn't have happened without the combined efforts of these 4 talented people.
I would like to proclaim my profound thanks to Val Valgardson at Suburban Artworks for the many, many hours of deciphering my art work, CGI renderings, long, enjoyable conversations, computer generated analysis of moving parts to prove the concept prior to pursuing fabrication, and the amazing work on the website to this point (lots more to do). Ty Oberlin at Dynaform for taking the leap on what he thought was a very convoluted and difficult project (and he was proved right), his many, many hours (sometimes incredibly frustrating hours, hole in garage door kind of frustrating) of additional computer generated analysis of moving parts, further engineering and fabricating. Mick McKenna (founder of NC's "All Clean Comedy") for answering the call every time I needed a sounding board and friend. He knew I needed all my money to go towards tooling and materials and that I didn't want to spend a lot of money toward having a video produced for this KS project. Mick is a big GMW's advocate and willingly gave up his time (Thanks Shirley!!) and talent to sit down with me to produce the KS video.
I came up with the concept, but I couldn't have done this on my own. We all need people in our lives to help move us forward, irregardless of what we are moving toward. These folks have put in a lot of hard work, over a long period of time, and are the reason I am able to address you here today on Kickstarter to show you the amazing product that is Gypsy Mule Wagons™!
Risks and challenges
Parts availability and supply - Currently, we rely on our vendors for many parts that will provide us with key components of our product. Receiving these parts on time from various small business vendors is key to keeping up with production. We have been working with our vendors for a couple of years ordering different parts and trying out new designs in the development process of the wagons. So, we have great relationships with the vendors we purchase our material and parts from. We have confidence that the number of parts we are ordering to fulfill our production runs related to this kickstarter campaign will be available on time.
If there was one component of the chair that had the potential to vary in the timing of delivery, I would have to say it would be the chair slings (Sling" = name for the fabric on the chair.) These "slings" are all hand made in the USA (don't mess with Texas!) and there is the chance that for reasons beyond our control a delay may occur. I don't think that will happen, but stranger things can and do happen all the time. I have an alternate source for the slings should I need to use them. For the time being, or for however long it is in the interest of both of our businesses to work together on the slings, I will outsource the production of the slings until I can develop my own sling production. I have invested in professionally produced sling patterns for production purposes. We have made a small improvement to the slings you see on the chairs currently due to an extra 1" of total length of the fabric from the top of the backrest to where the fabric connects to the forward seat frame causing the waviness you see in the images in this Kickstarter campaign. That has been resolved.
Having direct contact with the owners of the small businesses that we are working with helps to guarantee strong cooperation and to productively deal with potential problems early. After all, we depend on each other for the success of our own businesses.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
