The forest comes alive at night. The wind howls and whistles between the trees, and every snap of a branch may be an animal, a witch, or something far, far worse. Keep a careful eye out for shapes and shadows. The white horse rides.
Praise for The Witching Hour
“Hoelzemann is one of comics’ most promising storytellers, and with The Witching Hour she once again brings her confident line and elegant gloom to bear and demonstrates why.”
Antony Johnston, Atomic Blonde, Umbral, Wasteland
“Robin uses her ever-elegant lineart and alluring colour palettes to offer up a cautionary tale that feels like it’s been plucked from a dusty book of fairy stories – one with gorgeous illustration plates that you pour over for ages. Classic, timeless and very, very beautiful.”
Emma Vieceli, Breaks
“As pristinely beautiful as a snowstorm, as deadly, as chilling. File next to Becky Cloonan’s morbid, unresolved, wonderful fables. File prominently, file with pride.”
Kieron Gillen, Wicked + The Divine
The Witching Hour is a self-contained graphic novel. This will be the first time the comic is available in print and we've decided to go big or go home. You'll be able to read The Witching Hour in full colour, in a beautiful, glossy, A4 book. Including development sketches, a fantastic logo design by Paul Duffield, and a cover coloured by Triona Farrell, this is your chance to dive into the definitive edition of The Witching Hour. By supporting the comic at various tiers you can get:
ACHIEVED: Our first stretch goal is this absolutely fantastic and spooky print by the amazing artist Fez Baker. Having reached £4,600, we'll add a copy of this beautiful piece to every pledge of £16 or more. ALL Early Bird Backer tiers will receive a copy as a thank you for their swift support! You can find more of Fez's designs on her website here, or follow her on social media.
ACHIEVED we'll include an original, five-page short story in both the digital and print versions of The Witching Hour. The Edge Effect will be written and illustrated by Robin and coloured by the fantastic Triona Farrell! Triona's colours are absolutely amazing, and we'd be lucky to have her on board!
They say in London there is a woman who can create wishes from the dust of fallen stars.
ACHIEVED We will now be able to increase the print run for The Witching Hour. This may not sound very fancy, but it helps me tremendously. Creators rarely get a chance to take advantage of economies of scale on independent print runs and having stock for conventions is a really big deal. In addition, we've hired Aditya Bidikar to add his lettering talents to The Edge Effect and Paul Duffield will be rejoining us to design the logo.
This breakdown represents the cost of running the Kickstarter to its initial goal, making and shipping the books and rewards. There may be some variation in the shipping figure, depending on the geographical split of orders. Incidentals include fun things like an ISBN, labels, jiffy bags, the bookmarks, and bookplates.
Robin Hoelzemann is a comic creator and illustrator. She is very excited to bring the gothic fable The Witching Hour to Kickstarter, and is currently at work on a new story about a store that sells wishes. She enjoys baking, reading, tabletop RPGs, and long walks (with or without a beach).
Robin's first comic, Curia Regis, has been collected into a 190-page, full colour, softcover graphic novel. It has french flaps and contains the first eleven chapters of the comic. A limited number of copies are being made available through this Kickstarter.
Jacques has always held his cards close to his chest, but he’s rising to new levels of secrecy these days. He’s sure to have his reasons…. It’s probably just the stress of trying to steal an entire country.
Risks and challenges
No project comes without risks. We are, however, doing everything possible to minimise them. The art for this book is complete, with the exception of any additional content prompted by stretch goals. Our printer, Comic Printing UK, is notoriously reliable, and did an amazing job printing the book for the Curia Regis Kickstarter campaign.
Backers will be sent regular progress updates. If any delays do occur, all participants will be updated through Kickstarter and social media.
As the goal is to have the comic finished by the Autumn convention season, all physical rewards are expected to ship latest by October. Assuming an engaged response from backers at the £120 tier, the digital commissions for the highest tier will be completed by the end of December.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
