My Majora's Mask...
I've always been a fan of the Zelda games, especially Majora's Mask, and played it a whole load during my childhood. The actual design of the mask always stood out to me as being slightly unsettling, fitting in perfectly with the general theme of the game.
It's been something I've wanted to sculpt for a long time. I've seen many people that have done it, and a lot of people have really done the game design justice, but I wanted something a lot more... aged. Something that genuinely looks like a relic from some long-forgotten civilization, left to rot in a temple somewhere before being discovered and reclaimed. I wanted it to look worn, slightly dirty, rough around the edges. A truly unsettling item that pulls your gaze. Many of the replica's I've seen so far were just too... clean.
So I decided to make my own beat-up, chipped, marked, ancient version.
The Mask Itself
It was a very arduous sculpting process (for anyone who's interested, I've posted a few 'work in progress' pictures below), but an extremely rewarding result. The mask can be considered 'full-sized' and is definitely wearable should you wish to add straps and eye holes. It measures around 16" from tip to tip of the two outer horns, and is around another 16" from the tip of the top spike to the bottom. It's cast in white polyurethane resin and weighs just shy of 1kg. The mask has an aged wood-grain effect carved into it for the body, and the spikes are sculpted to look more like degraded animal horns. I really think it adds an air of atmosphere to the finished piece, and gives it more of an 'ancient relic' look.
I've set the funding goal to £1500, as this would allow me to bulk-buy the materials needed to create the replicas and start selling these to fellow Zelda fans and cosplay fanatics. I really enjoyed creating this mask and would be honoured if people got some joy from it.
Shipping times are based around the unfortunate fact that I have a 9-5 job to do (It would be amazing to do this as a full-time job though!), but rest assured I will be fulfilling orders as fast as I can. I will be shipping masks in batches as I'm completing them, rather than waiting until the end, so those of you who back first will receive your masks a lot quicker. UK orders include shipping via ParcelForce which should be delivered within 48 hours, international orders do have an added cost as it is more expensive to ship abroad.
I'm more than happy to ship to anywhere in the world, and all masks will be protectively packaged and sent using tracked postage to make sure you receive them in perfect condition!
The Creative Process...
Risks and challenges
As with any project of this ilk, the main risk with producing a large number of replicas would be damage to the mould. Silicone moulds are very durable, but over time tiny rips and tears can create minute imperfections that eventually spread across the piece. To combat this, I would love to create a second mould should I raise sufficient funds. Not only would that help with production times but would reduce wear and tear on the mould I'm currently using.
Apart from this obviously production times would be the next thing to consider, with me being a solo act. To counter this I have limited the number of masks available to those I believe I can complete within the times given. Rest assured however that I will not compromise on quality. Should I be funded I will be very open with the whole process and will do my best to keep everyone in the loop about any possible delays, as my priority will be getting the best possible final result to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
