Benjamin Smythe was born in Boston General Hospital on March 3rd, 1995 to Mr. Jonathan Smythe and Mrs. Janess Smythe. He achieved high honors and was the valedictorian at his high school. He went on to receive several degrees and doctorates at MIT, Cambridge, the London School of Economics, and Harvard. He has doctorates in Quantum Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautic Engineering, Astronomy, and Philosophy.

During his Aeronautic Engineering doctorate at MIT he met and fell in love with an undergraduate student named Claudette Arnuar (see file entry Exotechnology Corporation / Personnel / Spouses / Claudette Arnuar Smythe(d) ). They were married in a private ceremony on June 12th, 2026. They had their first and only child Charlene Mary Smythe on October 12th, 2028.

Claudette was diagnosed with a rare strain of stage IV lymphoma on November 21st, 2028 and passed away on March 2nd, 2029.

At this point Benjamin abandoned several areas of study to found a small private technology think tank called Roundworld Revisited. This company was later bought and absorbed by a larger company in a friendly take-over for an undisclosed amount.

On November 15th, 2035 there was an accident involving a school bus driver having a seizure while driving a bus load of elementary school children to school. There were 9 injuries and one fatality that day. Charlene Mary Smythe was declared dead at 9:58 AM at Boston General Hospital that day due to complications arising from a broken neck. In a later criminal investigation is was discovered the school was aware of the bus driver's condition but did nothing. Benjamin Smythe received an undisclosed settlement and disappeared from the public eye for the next ten years.

During this period he perfected and created the first Instantaneous Faster Than Light drive (see Exotechnology Corporation / Technology / IFTL). He also crafted the first human vessel that would ever go to another solar system: the Charlene.
