A First Attempt
This Kickstarter represents a first attempt at a crowd-funded project. Many lessons were learned, many obstacles were overcome, and we are in a much better position to attempt this rather ambitious project in the future. There is much to do to get this particular project off the ground, and it may be some time before I am in a position to turn Killer Croquet into a reality. If you want to be notified in regards to Killer Croquet News, you can check our website or our facebook page.
If Killer Croquet interests you, and you would like to play, we've uploaded all of the files you'd need to create your own prototype: http://www.killercroquet.wordpress.com/print-and-play/
I want to thank my awesome supporters, my backers, and the reviewers who helped give this project a major boost. This has been an intense experience, it may take some time, but I plan to follow through with this project and turn it into a reality one way or another.
- Below is the Kickstarter Campaign Page as it stood in the final days on the Kickstarter, left mostly unaltered so that it can be studied in greater detail for future kickstarters.
Killer Croquet offers free shipping anywhere in the United States and only $15 shipping anywhere else in the world thanks to our distribution partners.
Killer Croquet is an arena board game. It is light and thematic, and has tactical positioning, risk management, and multiple paths to victory.
Six of the World's Greatest Croquet Players have been kidnapped by a Shadow Organization known as the Pall Mall. Take on the role of an ex-soviet super spy, a time-traveling steampunk cyborg, or the nordic God of Thunder as you play for the highest of stakes: your lives.
Each turn you have have two actions and can move, hit your ball, or attack. The choice is yours to either make progress along the Croquet Course or attack other players. Knock your ball through a wicket or into another player's ball to gain a Roquet and extra actions.
When you hit your ball you use custom dice, the soft dice (1,1,1,2,2,3), the fair dice (1,3,4,5,6,8), or you can hit your ball, wicked hard (both dice added together). Hit your ball hard enough to hit your targets, but if you hit the edge of the board, you lose your extra hits!
To win, pass your ball through each wicket in the correct order and direction both forwards and backwards, or score seven points through violence, or simply be the only player standing. So many options, it'll take skill and cunning to navigate a course to victory.
The Killer Croquet Standard Box contains the most polished version of the game and the following components:
- -Box with dimensions (30cm x 22cm x 4cm, roughly Pandemic Sized)
- -BiFold Chipboard Game Board
- -2 Custom Dice
- -6 Custom 3D Printed Player Stands & Health Sliders
- -18 Wooden Discs
- -Collision Deck, Character Cards, Reference Cards
- -Chipboard Player Stand Ups, Wicket Markers and Tokens.
"The rules of the game are quite simple and straight forward, as one would suspect being croquet."
"All in all Killer Croquet is a cute game with a unique premise."
“Killer Croquet is a different kind of sports game. I like that it offers multiple ways to win, and the choice of croquet is a breath of fresh air in a genre that seems to be getting filled with football/rugby variants.”
“Killer Croquet makes a terrific a filler between your space operas or Mediterranean business venturers.”
“. . . the gameplay is solid, offers good opportunities (and incentives) for interaction, and the theme does a good job of being engaging but not taking itself too seriously.”
"Killer Croquet is a game good for social play or families with kids"
"Killer Croquet comes across as a uniquely designed cross between the futility of staying alive in games like Frag with the chaotic dice nature of games like King of Tokyo."
"Killer Croquet is a relatively uncomplicated game that hits all of the notes suggested by the title. Providing a robust round of croquet interspersed with instances of deathmatch-level infighting, you’ll need to strategize between actually finishing the course and racking up the kills to inflate your score."
"Overall, Killer Croquet is a light weight romp through the wickets; a mechanically sound game with an eccentric theme that is refreshing in a time where futuristic football games seem to dominate the sports genre."
"First impressions are good, it’s certainly a unique theme – a game of croquet with killer consequences – and immediately it was clear that the designer has put a lot of love, fun and enthusiasm into the game."
"The all-important question – Is it fun? Yes, very much so. . . Overall it’s a game I’d like to play again and I’d love to see a production version of the game."
Free Shipping to anywhere in the United States, and a flat additional charge of $13 to ship anywhere outside the United States. All backers above $5 will also receive the digital rewards from the Croquet Spectator Tier.
The base game of Killer Croquet has been tested and polished for years now; you can check some of the reviews here.
Once the Kickstarter is successful, I want to put some more money into polishing the art and layout. Currently the rule book is already set in a 300 dpi illustrator file, ready to go, but I'd love to have a couple professionals go over it to make the rule book as legible as possible.
Once that is all set, we'll move into production. I already have a variety of quotes for the manufacture of the game and physical rewards. I'll have them manufacture sample copies, fix any problems that arise, then move forward with production.
Different components will be made by different manufacturers, they'll be consolidated at the primary manufacturing plant, shrink wrapped, and then shipped to my distribution partners.
There are a few more steps involved, but you get the general idea. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me directly.
My name is Mackenzie Cameron, I do a lot of things.
- I am a chairperson of a Game Design Guild in Boston
- I draw a board game themed webcomic
- I run my own 3D Print Shop
I am very heavily entrenched in Board Game culture, and, though this is my first published game, I am well versed in the production process and the ways of industry.
I have an excellent community of game designers supporting me, and giving me the feedback necessary to bring you the best game possible. You can learn more about the development of Killer Croquet on the dev blog.
You should back this project based on one thing: Quality.
Check out the game rules, see if they're your cup of tea. Print out the PnP Prototype and play a few rounds. Simple as that. Furthermore, check out the backstory for Killer Croquet. My board game has a unique theme, and I've spent months fleshing out the universe in which these Croquet Professionals play for blood.
I love this game, and I love the story behind it. You will too, that's why I'm 100% transparent about everything about the game.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter. This game has been play-tested rigorously over the past couple years, by a variety of designers and play-testers. The game is sound, but the biggest hurdle will be fulfillment.
Fortunately, I have the support of the Game Makers Guild, and already have quotes from 3 companies to handle the manufacturing.
I have cross-checked shipping quotes, and have multiple options available for fulfillment. It looks like the company "Ship Naked" will have the most solid distribution method for our needs. This may be my first game, but as a result I have quadruple checked to make sure every stage of production is air tight.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
