Core: Extended is the first major expansion to the HC SVNT DRACONES role playing universe, which was successfully funded right here with your generous support. HSD C:E Includes new playable families, new species abilities, new surgical options and morphisms, and expands and expounds upon the lore in the core book to provide Guides and players with a richer understanding of their universe. Also included are game rules variations to help you tailor your gaming experience to your players, in an effort to give all HSD fans the gaming experience they'll most enjoy. The initial design and construction process for Core:Extended was funded as a stretch by the original HSD kickstarter, so there's already lots of material to show you!
C:E will introduce several new families into the Vector universe, including bears, horses, rodents, and even sharks and dolphins. New rules and lore for these families will give you a solid foundation for where to include them and how to play them, as well as expand your overall vision of the HSD environment. With new families that function as well in the water as on land, and a new flying species, your ability to expand your play environments will increase significantly.
The Cog was an oft-discussed but never featured factor in the HSD rulebook. Pagecount is a limiting factor in a published operation when you don't own your own printing company, and the core rulebook is already an expensive tome. But no worries: Core:Extended features an entire section on Cogs including their society, their appearance, rules for playing and associating with them, and a host of wonderful images to help you imagine how your own Cog character will look! Cogs stand side by side with Vectors in the Sol system, and with C:E, you can reflect that in both your NPC's and your player parties.
C:E has an assortment of new Morphisms to include in your campaigns, with new public opinions and new momentum triggers. Aside from increasing the variety in your party, several of these new body types directly correlate to actions taken over the course of Vector existence (or perhaps even before they came to be) and open several plot doorways for your Guides to exploit.
Along with new Motivations (several of which are more plot-based than the generic options provided in the core rulebook), C:E includes an optional Compulsion mechanic which will allow you to reflect somewhat more...unhinged individuals, turning your Motivation into something a character needs to actively fight to resist, lest they leap blindly into danger in pursuit of a personal goal.
C:E features several dramatic new elements for Guides and players to actively re-define their realities. Hive implants for the inclusion of frightening collectives of fanatical devotees, Drone control systems to allow fragile characters to seek shelter while sending the heavy metal in to do the dirty work, and 2 foot tall Cogsunes whose technology is so profound it can literally re-write the definition of death.
Included in C:E is a large section dedicated to detailing some of the most commonly asked questions about the HSD setting, as well as providing context and suggestions for how to use the material in your own campaigns. A mixture of story and exposition will provide readers with an understanding of both the reality of a situation, and the commonly accepted perception of it. Don't fret, though. C:E includes over 120 pages of solid rule and mechanical material for you to expand your game with, so people with a fear of "filler" can rest easy.
Risks and challenges
Core:Extended has had a solid foundation already laid down thanks to previous funding from the HSD kickstarter. It has allowed for the purchase of initial artwork, the completion of the majority of the text, and a good chunk of the layout process. Your fundraising will cover the completion of the book, its editing, and all the costs associated with getting it ready for print (proofing, shipping, etc.). As these processes have been done before with the HSD core rulebook, we foresee limited difficulty. At worse, deployment of Core:Extended will be delayed due to proofing issues or artwork delays. Barring injury or illness, there is virtually no risk of cancellation.
The deadline that has been set for this book's release was chosen as a conservative estimate that assumes the need for several proof prints. Should the initial proof be sufficient, it's possible the book could become available sooner. While I would like to get the digital and print versions of this book out at the same time, if it turns out there are going to be extensive delays in the print (it happens; between printer weekends, email read times and action delays, and shipping times, every problem takes 3 weeks to fix when printing is concerned) the digital version will be distributed first so as not to keep you waiting.
During our last kickstarter, we ran into a miscalculation regarding the sheer amount of paper needing to be mailed out for rewards, as well as the poor treatment of the packages by the postal office. This time, every printed product in this kickstarter is being handled by drivethrurpg, shipped through their systems and protected by their cardboard, which will ensure that we know the cost of rewards and the quality they'll arrive in across the board.
