YOXO is a recyclable construction kit that inspires kids to invent their own toys out of Y, O and X links and reused cardboard tubes.
What is YOXO?
YOXO (yock-so) is a revolutionary toy idea. It's a creative construction kit that inspires kids to invent their own toys using durable, recycled chipboard connectors that come in Y, O and X shapes.
YOXO encourages kids to create with materials they find around the house, especially cardboard tubes. There are more than 19 billion cardboard tubes discarded every year. Each one could be turned into a toy using YOXO.
YOXO starts as a 3D puzzle. Kids learn about spatial relations and how to use YOXO by assembling what's on the box from the links, tubes and curved pieces included in the kit. Then they disassemble that toy, add stuff they find around the house and create anything they can imagine.
At Play from Scratch we have two giant goals. The first is to inspire relentlessly creative kids who have imaginations powerful enough to confront and solve the challenges they will face as adults.
Our second goal is to set a new standard for sustainability in toys. Everything we make includes recycled material and is ultimately recyclable. We source our wood pulp-based products from sustainable sources and are constantly looking for ways to reduce, balance or eliminate the environmental impact of what we do.
In pursuing all of this, we also have fun. Fun is fuel for creativity and invention and critical to a long and happy life. Kids need more fun.
YOXO is a huge leap forward for us. It is our first building set and first product designed for a mass market. In order to pull it off we will need to buy new equipment, invest in better packaging and get out there to meet the brilliant young inventors hungry to create their own toys. Your support will make this happen.
We've already put YOXO in front of hundreds of kids and they love it. Kids intuitively know how to connect the links and tubes and immediately set about creating. Now the challenge is to finish the design and ramp up production - that is where we need your help!

Getting YOXO to market presents two fundamental challenges. The first is material selection. We've built prototypes using a variety of rigid chipboard composites. Our goal is to meet our sustainability requirements with a recycled chipboard that will stand up to years of creative play.
The second challenge is cutting the YOXO links. The designs are very intricate for die cutting, especially given the thickness of the chipboard. We want to avoid exploding cutting dies (for obvious reasons). We're also experimenting with laser and water jet cutting the YOXO pieces. Both techniques offer extreme precision and a gorgeous product but present challenges for mass production.
The great news is we have options and these challenges are surmountable. We are confident that we will hit a June 1 ship date for our first order.
YOXO links are made from coated recycled chipboard. Similar to very thick puzzle pieces. They are designed to withstand years of creative play and can be made any color under the sun. Early prototypes were made of thick corrugated cardboard (you will still see occasional photos with corrugate pieces) but we couldn't make the detailed die cut without smashing the cardboard.
YOXO was invented by Play from Scratch founder Jeff Freeland Nelson on a very cold day this winter. Stuck inside our warehouse, Jeff started playing with different notched shapes and discovered that by using Y, O and X links (and the resulting angles) you could create organic shapes and connect to cardboard tubes. YOXO version 1.0 was born. We are now on version 76.2.
YOXO is patent pending. We think that is pretty cool.
The name YOXO ("yock-so") derives from the shape of the pieces. The key links in each kit are shaped like the letters Y, O and X. There are also "I" shaped links that help connect the other pieces to cardboard tubes, but the name "YOXI" sounds too much like Yahtzee. Honestly.
