WHAT IS SPARROW LANE? Sparrow Lane is Patricia Gillespie's NYU thesis film-- but more importantly, Sparrow Lane is a story about NOW. It's a tale about America's economic tailspin, our foreclosure crisis, and our forgotten and struggling working and middle classes. It's about family, home, honor, love, and the dignity of labor. If you want some more specifics, check out the synopsis on our updates page.
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE A STORY LIKE THAT? We're going to be shooting our film, on location in Catskill, NY, April of 2011. We have a crew of 15 talented filmmakers and a cast of 10 talented actors (Including Gran Torrino's Doua Moua!) who believe in the project so deeply that they've all donated their time for free. With the support of the Chair of the Film&TV department, we've also secured NYU's generous Advanced allotment, which gives us around ten thousand dollars of insurance, equipment, facilities and cash. *We have lots more information available to you in our updates section including: Cast info budgets, stripboards, scheduling information, and storyboards. Check it out!
SO, WHY SHOULD I GIVE YOU MY MONEY? When you support Sparrow Lane, you're supporting more than a film. We're fiscally sponsored as a not-for-profit through Fractured Atlas. This means we're not trying to make money with our film; we're trying to make something happen.
Funding Sparrow Lane helps to: SUPPORT THE LABOR CLASS Sparrow Lane is a an opportunity for a working class person to tell a working class story in a medium that is usually reserved for the wealthy. It's a film about unions, union families, and the politics and social ramifications of a strike--all told from an insider's point of view. Working and middle class men and women who feel underrepresented in film will have an opportunity to see people like themselves onscreen, whereas people of the upper and upper-middle classes will have a unique opportunity to get inside the world of the blue collar American, and learn a bit more about the mechanics of labor in our great country. SUPPORT GREEN FILM Sparrow Lane is a Green Film. By using digital technology, printing as little as possible, and drastically modifying our catering, we are greatly reducing our carbon footprint. If enough independent filmmakers follow this trend, we feel Hollywood might take some much needed steps to catch up.
SUPPORT YOURSELF WITH GUARANTEED DISTRIBUTION Although the filmmakers behind Sparrow Lane are confident that our movie will be seen at festivals around the country in 2012, we recognize that funders want to be sure that their money is being put to good use--to a film that will not only be made, but used. That is why we have created the guaranteed distribution model. The cultural and economic facets of this film will make it useful to town hall meetings, labor organizations, schools, film clubs and many other social action groups around the country. The folks behind Sparrow Lane have committed to offering their film, free of charge, to a varied list of organizations. These organizations will also receive a list of "discussion starters" that will enable viewers to use the film as a way to talk to each other about labor politics, home foreclosure, family values, and the economy in general. This is great news for funders who would like to get in on Product Placement, Sponsorship, Associate Producing and Special Thanks levels. Your Name, or Your Company's name and logo is guaranteed to be seen around the country.
OKAY, BUT WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH MY MONEY? Be it a buck or a billion, we'll work hard to make your money work harder. The money we raise on Kickstarter has to be at least a third of our budget, so your donation will go into everything from transportation to post production to lodging to equipment rental, and so on.
For Example: A donation of $5 will get us C-47s so we can clip gels and diffusion to our lighting equipment. A donation of $25 will supply batteries to our entire sound department. A donation of $50 will help us rent a prime lens for one day of shooting. A donation of $250 will feed our entire cast and crew one healthy dinner. A donation of $500 will get us a steadycam for nice smooth tracking shots. A donation of $1000 will rent us an equipment van. A donation of $3000 will pay for lodging for the entire crew.
*If you have any more questions about where your money will go, please check out our fully transparent top-sheet budget in the updates section, or contact us directly! DIRECTOR'S NOTE Dear Friends, I grew up in a mill town alongside a bunch of good kids. Some of those kids are in college, some of those kids are in jail, and some of those kids are dead. I was raised in a union household and taught about a man’s right to support his family with hard work. I watched as my father worked seventy hour weeks trying to make ends meet. “Don’t be like me,” he would say, “go to college.” I am happy to say that I am my father’s daughter. I have his work ethic, his stubbornness, his passion. Those are the qualities that brought me to NYU film. I take my obligations as a filmmaker very seriously. It is my intention to devote my life to telling the stories of the working class. I feel that for such a large portion of the population, the blue-collar hero is highly underrepresented in film. Sparrow Lane is my character-driven swan song to those good kids that became the casualties of an economic war waged in small towns and urban epicenters all across this country. It’s an alternate battle plan to the war on drugs—create more jobs. It’s a story about our country that needs to be seen, and it’s my job to tell it.
So truly Yours, Patricia
