About this project
About the work
You are (on) an island is a large blue neon sign that states quite literally, "You are on an island." The word ‘on’ blinks rhythmically on and off, and for the moments that word remains unilluminated, a new phrase with a different meaning emerges - “You are an island.”
About the exhibition
We have been invited to exhibit this sculpture at Neon Workshops in Wakefield, England, in early 2013. This is an amazing opportunity for us to exhibit our work internationally (on one of the world's most notable islands!), and we need your help to raise the funds to make it happen. From 30 January - 16 March, You are (on) an island will be installed on Neon Workshop’s rooftop platform, which is visible from a commuter train line that connects London, Leeds, and Edinburgh. Another neon sculpture by Alicia Eggert, called Speaking in Tongues, will be exhibited in Neon Workshops' indoor gallery.
About the guerilla sculpture tour
Since we're taking this large-scale sculpture all the way across the Atlantic ocean, we'd like as many people to see it as possible. With your help, we'd like our exhibition in England to begin with a two-week guerilla sculpture tour around West Yorskshire (the area surrounding Neon Workshops). We are going to rent a large commercial van and drive around the county to install and photograph the work in various public locations. We will set the sculpture up at dawn and dusk in two different locations every day - on traffic islands at rush hour, and in other scenic settings - to shake up people’s daily routines and generate public interest in the exhibition.
About the publication
Documentation of our guerilla sculpture tour will be featured in a limited edition book that will be published in conjunction with the exhibition. It will include color photographs, ephemera, a hand-drawn map of our route, and personal notes about the experience. It will also include a critical essay discussing the work and and its relevance to the United Kingdom.
About the rewards
Below are just a few examples of the rewards that we are offering.
If you pledge $30, you will receive "Limousine: It's just a long car," an original t-shirt designed and printed by Mike Fleming.
If you pledge $50, you will receive a signed copy of the limited edition publication, which will feature images from our guerilla sculpture tour.

About the costs involved with this project
$12,000 might seem like a lot of money, but it will pay for a lot of things:
- Our flights to England.
- Shipment/Reproduction of our work at Neon Workshops in England.
- Renting a large commercial van and a generator to take the sculpture on a guerilla sculpture tour around West Yorkshire (and paying for gas!).
- Printing a limited edition color publication that will allow us to share our experience with you!
