About this project
The Ice Kingdoms is a fantasy setting inspired by and designed for old school RPG’s. We love the ‘feel’ of old school games and their rules, and we are creating materials that are compatible with several current systems that ‘retro-clone’ those older games. The Ice Kingdoms is compatible with OSRIC and For Gold & Glory, and our books can also be used with Swords & Wizardry, Basic Fantasy Role-Playing, and Labyrinth Lord with only very minimal conversion, as well as the original editions upon which these games are based. Eventually we plan to produce versions of the setting that are compatible with other popular systems, such as Pathfinder, 3rd Edition and 5th edition rules.
We currently have three books we plan to produce. The first is a The Ice Kingdoms Campaign Setting, a game setting that is sort of Robert E. Howard Sword and Sorcery meets Vikings. It captures the fantastical aspects of Norse Mythology with some Greek, Arthurian, Celtic, Germanic and Russian Mythology added for flavor. But it is firmly set in a fantasy world.
Our plan is to publish our material through print on demand suppliers such as Printer Studio and Lulu. This is to keep the cost of the Kickstarter as low as we can and pass the savings on to you. If we raise substantial funds over our goal and stretch goals, this method of production may change. The money being raised is to pay for our stable of artists and our contributing writers such as James M. Ward. We have decided to go with professional artists instead of using stock art or public domain art to enable us to precisely evoke the setting and feeling of the setting we are creating. We also want our backers to receive a product with new art and not just reused images they may already have in other products they have purchased.
Stretch goals will cover our two other planned books, including The Ice Kingdoms Bestiary and The Ice Kingdoms Adventures campaign supplement. In addition we have several adventure modules in the works that will be unlocked as stretch goals.
The base funding goal will cover the creation of the core Ice Kingdoms Campaign Setting Guide and the adventure module Into the Mournwood by James M. Ward.
The recommended pledge award for the best value and reward level is the $30 pledge that includes the following rewards: Ice Kingdoms Campaign Setting soft cover book, a PDF Copy of The Ice Kingdoms Campaign Setting, a PDF copy of the adventure Into the Mournwood by James Ward and a PDF copy of the Ice Kingdoms map. OR, for the same pledge amount, you can choose to receive pdf copies of everything this kickstarter finances (but no physical copies)...
As we hit different stretch goals each extra release will be available as an add on.
We are hoping to add in more stretch-goals as we go, such as commissioning art from industry legends like Jeff Dee, Paolo Parente and Jeff Easley. These extra stretch goals will be added as the campaign goes on.
Other add ons that may be unlocked as we go along include PDF and print versions of all books unlocked, alternate sized maps, posters and other Ice Kingdoms themed items.
NOTE: Prices do not reflect shipping.
A NOTE ON THE BLACK EDITION: The Black Edition of Ice Kingdoms Campaign Setting is an early limited run version of the main book. The final version of the actual Campaign Setting may be different. The Black Edition allows backers to get a reward almost immediately, however this version of the book is light on art and may be unrefined (meaning a higher chance of editing errors). Backers who take the plunge on the Black Edition will also receive a standard edition of the book at the normal shipping time for the main product.
The day the Black Edition is shipped the backers who are receiving that reward will also receive a copy of the Black Edition PDF in their email.
ABOUT CS BARNHART
CS Barnhart is the lead designer of the project. He has in the past worked for Fantasy Flight Games, Modiphius Entertainment, Chaosium, and Battlefront Miniatures as designer, writer and playtester for several systems ranging from miniature rules to role playing games.
He has also worked as a playtester for Zweihander (also contributor to rules), Mutant Chronicles, Mutant Future, Biosyndrome (also contributor to rules), Rogue Trader, Star Wars: Edge of Empire and more. He has been in the role playing and miniature wargaming hobby for 30 years and active as a writer and designer for the past 10.
His chief credits include: Dust Warfare Achilles and Babylon (rules), Dust Adventures Role Playing Game (Rule Design and Background), and Berlin '61 (everything).
He is currently on active duty in the US Army.
ABOUT JAMES WARD
Ward was one of the players in Gary Gygax's early Greyhawk games as Gygax developed the Dungeons & Dragons game. The Dungeons & Dragons character Drawmij was named after him; "Drawmij" is simply "Jim Ward" spelled backwards. Rob Kuntz and Ward's Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes (1976) expanded the original D&D game by introducing gods. Ward designed Metamorphosis Alpha (1976), which was the first science-fantasy role-playing game, and published as TSR's fourth role-playing game. Ward co-authored Deities & Demigods (1980). Ward wrote Greyhawk Adventures (1988), a hardcover volume that presented new rules for the Greyhawk setting. Ward, with David Cook, Steve Winter, and Mike Breault, co-wrote the adventure scenario that was adapted into the game Pool of Radiance. In 1989 he was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Hall of Fame. Ward designed the Spellfire collectible card game. Ward designed the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game. Ward founded the d20 company Fast Forward Entertainment with Timothy Brown, Lester Smith, John Danovich and Sean Everett. From 2000 - 2005, he was President of Fast Forward Entertainment, an independent game development company. Ward wrote Sete-Ka's Dream Quest (2006), an adventure gamebook published by Margaret Weis Productions. He wrote the Halcyon Blithe novel Dragonfrigate Wizard (Tor, 2006), which he considered one of his better and prouder creations. Ward joined Troll Lord Games, writing books such as the Towers of Adventures (2008) boxed set and the Of Gods & Monsters (2009) supplement for Castles & Crusades; Ward also became the editor for Troll Lord's C&C magazine, The Crusader Journal. Ward also wrote the horror fantasy game Tainted Lands (2009), based on C&C's "SIEGE" system.

Risks and challenges
The major risks or challenges for any independent game company are time and money. Writing takes time. Art, layout, editors, additional writers, printing, shipping all cost money. We are attempting to have as much of the core book complete before the kickstarter finishes to have rapid completion of our commitment to you our backers. I know how it is waiting for a kickstarter to fulfill their products to the backers. This is why we are not doing shirts or special dice or other non-gaming add ons or stretch goals. Though you can purchase Ice Kingdoms shirts through a link on our website. Everything we are offering is for the enjoyment of actually playing the game.
Therefore our major challenge is to get the core book ready for shipping in time for Christmas 2016 and any delays will be avoided as best possible.
Another issue we face is many of our core members are military members and we can not control their schedules 100%. Hopefully our talented freelancers will help us avoid any issues that arise from any military related issues.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
