The Pocket Companion: A Tavern Guide
Hello and welcome to the Kickstarter for 'The Pocket Companion: A Tavern Guide'.
We are creating a beautifully designed soft cover guide spanning over 100 pages. Filled with over 40 taverns, NPCs, plot hooks and tools; a perfect resource or gift for any DM or GM. Each tavern within the guide contains a unique take on the classic RPG trope, sure to inspire many adventures and form many parties.
Please continue to check out the rest of the page below if you would like more information on what you can expect to find in the guide along with the other rewards you could receive.
Our aim for this Kickstarter is to raise enough funds to publish physical copies of our tavern guide! With your help we want to bring you a fun and unique guide that will help you during games and won't break the bank or your back in the process.
Although we are offering other rewards in this campaign, the main focus of the Kickstarter is the Tavern Guide. The final product will be an 5x8 softcover guide that's easy to carry to games and even easier to explore and utilise. The quality is incredible and we cant wait to start sending it out! With your pledge you will be supporting a really small (like minuscule) team of tabletop enthusiasts with big dreams.
£6,500 Stretch Goal (UNLOCKED): Now we have hit target, we have introduced a stretch goal. If we hit £6,500 we will add an additional 45 pages to the book (that's 50% more book!), which will include:
An additional 25 taverns plus NPCs
- A random tavern generator (Symatt via Twitter)
- Tavern Games (Thank you Matt Patton and Ben Schmidt)
- Tavern Cellars and their Secrets (Thank you Florian Kastell and Shelley Blake)
£8,000 Stretch Goal (UNLOCKED): Reaching £8000 will mean that we are 200% funded, which would be incredible. This is what will happen if we reach it:
- Additional artwork will be commissioned for the new chapters.
- Every backer that has pledged for a physical copy of the book (£10 or above) will receive a bookmark added to their rewards.
- Every backer that has pledged for any add-ons (including packages) or have pledged at a VIP level will receive an artwork print exclusive to this stretch goal.
£10,000 Stretch Goal (UNLOCKED): A tavern-based adventure for Dnd5e
This adventure will be created and developed using the roll-tables and tools available in the Pocket Companion: A Tavern Guide and will be put together to form a one-shot adventure or side quest for Dnd5e. This adventure will then be given to all of our backers that have pledged for a copy of The Pocket Companion, and will be sent to you as a PDF for you to enjoy. As a bonus I will be sharing with you the creation process of this adventure and the rolls I made to get there. I am a huge fan of improvised games and I think this would be a really fun way of showing how the Pocket Companion can be used.
Please note: If we reach this stretch goal we will be focussing on fulfilling the existing rewards for this campaign prior to releasing the adventure. Therefore, the tavern adventure PDF may be delivered after the deadline specified on the current rewards.
What's currently in the guide?
The book contains a number of sections:
A number of our favourite adventure hooks to kick off a small adventure or an entire campaign. Each one designed to use to form parties or to entice existing ones!
The Tavern Guide
This section of The Pocket Companion is broken down into four categories to make finding the tavern you need easier: Cities and Towns, On the Road, Villages, and Wilderness. Each of the four sections is bursting with taverns and inns for you to utilise as you wish. Each page is set out with a 'Cask Rating' out of five, reviews from NPCs, and a set of symbols that relate to the services they provide, allowing you to get a feel for the place at a glance. Alongside some of these taverns you will also find a section including NPCs that give you details of some of the staff and/or patrons you and your players might encounter. The NPCs are system neutral and therefore have no accompanying stats, and each NPC comes complete with role play notes so you can quickly understand their motives.
Throughout this section you will find Taverns, Tap-houses, Inns, beer carts and festival stalls, all packed with flavour text and even more plot hooks for you to explore and discover. Every tavern was either created by us and used in our games, or have been lovingly contributed by our backers previous campaigns.
Drinks and Distractions
For us, we love a roll table, and so we had to write up a few for this guide. In this section we have included a set of roll tables to help you create a unique bar menu on the fly along with accompanying tasting notes. From the finest ale to the cheapest swill, these tables have provided us with endless amusement.
Taverns are places filled with interesting people, doing interesting things. There are plenty of ways to create strange and challenging situations for your players. In this section of the guide you will find a D20 roll table of possible distractions. Each result will lead to a challenging social encounter or event that attempts to occupy the players attention.
The Homebrew Section
If there's one particular thing we love about the Tabletop gaming community, it's the creativity that is brought out in everyone. It's one of the reasons we launched the initial campaign, eventually leading us to this project. So this section is to celebrate you, and contains blank tavern templates and grids for floor maps for you to fill in with your own ideas, as well as space to include notes on your favourite NPCs.
At each of the pledge levels you will receive rewards for your contribution to the project. Even at our lowest pledge level you will be rewarded for your generosity. In this section of the campaign we will be breaking down what each of the rewards entail.
Backer Exclusive Content
As a backer you will gain access to backer exclusive updates. Throughout the course of the campaign not only will backers be given updates regarding the campaign, but you will also receive bonus content.
Bards, Brewers and Bandits! An NPC Collection.
Though far too big to be included in the printed guide, backers that choose a pledge level including this reward will receive a PDF full of NPCs that you may use at your leisure. Filled with fun and interesting characters that can be used to either staff or frequent your establishments. With this collection of misfits and muppets you can rest assured when your players slaughter every single one without fail that at least they didn't destroy your creations!
The Pocket Companion: A Tavern Guide
This is what it's all about!
Every backer that pledges on a reward level that includes this reward can expect to receive a physical copy of The Pocket Companion once it has been published. Each guide will be shipped with a thank you note from us and will include our undying gratitude. Each pledge including this reward means more to us than you can imagine, so thank you for your support.
Throughout the creation of our initial Kickstarter project we enlisted the support of some incredible artists. Not only did it feel awesome to give back to the community, but we made some great friends along the way. Backers that pledge at levels including this reward will receive a digital pack containing the artwork of The Pocket Companion. The pack will include the artwork, along with the story behind the commission and the details/history of the incredible artists that made them.
Overheard in a Tavern
One of our favorite things about taverns is the opportunity for storytelling. Every backer that pledges on a level that includes this reward will receive an additional series of one-hundred quest hooks relating to things/rumors overheard in a tavern.
Dice and Dice bag gift set
We love dice! We love buying dice, we love looking at dice, and we love giving dice to our friends! Backers that donate at a level containing this reward will receive a set of polyhedral dice with a Wis Save Media dice bag. This will be shipped along with their copy of The Pocket Companion as a thank you for making such an incredible donation.
A Sneak Peek
As we have mentioned before, we are a small team, but we have big dreams. The Tavern Companion started out as a test run for a much larger project and thanks to the previous campaign we are one step closer to reaching this dream. Any backers that pledge at a level containing this reward will receive an exclusive look at an upcoming project. You will have the opportunity to have access to the new product before anyone else, and will be first in line to invest.
Exclusive Access and Invite
Now if your looking at pledging to receive this reward we just want to thank you for considering it. We know its a serious amount of money, but we felt we wanted offer our supporters the opportunity to be a part of our community. You will receive a copy of the book, plus all of the other awards. But, you will also receive a Wis Save Media goodie bag, filled with loads of table top gaming treats.
With this reward you will also have exclusive access to our new project in development stage, and will be able to contribute your own ideas, helping us shape the product before it is launched. You will also be invited to a game night, getting the chance to join the team for an evening of fun.
Shipping and Delivery
For this campaign we will be handling postage and packaging after the campaign has ended, at the time of postage. One of our main considerations when creating this product was shipping. There is nothing worse than paying more for shipping than you did on the product itself when it comes to Kickstarter projects, so we will ensure that the cost of shipping your rewards are the best value for you. The lightweight design of the guide and the small packaging will allow us to ship to most places in the world without a hefty price tag. Once we are ready to ship, we will contact you with the shipping costs and we will ship once payment is received.
NOTE: Please do not add any allowance for shipping costs to your pledge during the campaign, all funds received during the funding period will go towards production.
Our Origin Story:
Just over a year ago a few friends and I launched a week long campaign to fund the creation of a PDF guide called 'The Tavern Companion'. The idea was simple: to celebrate one of our favourite tabletop RPG past times, the tavern. The book would be filled with taverns, inns, plot hooks, roll tables and other useful things that a GM could use in a pinch should they need to throw something together for their wondering band of adventurers.
One of the things we wanted to include was a way for the tabletop community to get involved. So we added an option for our backers to contribute their favorite taverns and characters from their previous games. We had always found the creativity our hobby instilled in us inspiring and we wanted to harness that throughout our project.
After a week, we had raised an incredible amount of money (way more than we anticipated) and had amassed a huge number of backers that wanted to contribute to our project. It was safe to say our project had been a success.
Now came the difficult part: converting our idea into reality. Over the next few months we began gathering the stories and taverns from our backers and painstakingly prepared them to be woven into the final product. It become apparent very quickly that we had a mammoth task on our hands and felt an incredible weight of responsibility caring for the stories our backers had shared with us.
Unfortunately the deadline came and went and we lost some of our team as life priorities shifted. We were left stressed, broken and concerned that we would never finish, but thanks to our incredible backers support we picked ourselves up off the floor and drove for the finish line.
Our final product ended up over 150 pages long (a far cry from our initial estimate of 40-50 pages) and had more content than we could have dreamed of.
The previous project inspired us, and we were determined to produce a product that celebrated the contributors to the initial project. As a result, this new product was born, and we are so excited to be able to offer a hard copy version of the guide.

Risks and challenges
During the last campaign our biggest challenge or barrier to completing the project was being able to deliver on time, and the huge number of contributors last time made this a challenge. As a result, we have ensured that the project was ready to print before the Kickstarter was launched.
Provided we hit our funding target, the book just needs to be sent to the publisher and will be complete before the end of the year.
The only issue we have envisaged is around shipping, but we have ensured that we are working with partners that are experienced in this area, who can support us and ensure we are getting the best possible value for our backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
