About this project
What is CAIN: FIRST BORN?
Cain: First Born will be a 300 page, full-color, multi-part graphic novel. It will chronicle the introduction, conflict, and redemption of Cain, the first born son of Adam and Eve and the world's first murderer.
In this action-filled series you will follow the journey of our anti-hero as he struggles to save the world from the impending Apocalypse. Ultimately, though, the story is about Cain's quest for renewal. A quest Cain does not even realize he is on.
Who is Cain?
Our main character is the biblical Cain, who murdered his brother Abel and was cursed for his actions. Cain's curse is to wander the Earth for eternity. This punishment burdens Cain with being ageless. Helplessly, he has watched those he loved grow old and die, while he lived on, roaming the Earth for millennia.
After God proclaimed Cain a murderer and Cain realized the extent of his curse, he vowed to be the perfect killing machine, to live up to the title: murderer. Cain sees himself as a force of nature, like a hurricane. He is another natural instrument of death by which the world revolves. Embracing this philosophy, Cain has been remorselessly killing throughout history.
Now, living in the modern world, Cain works as an assassin. He has perfected the art of killing, with thousands of years of experience and deaths notched on his belt.
And he knows that with each death by his hand, God takes notice.
We begin with Cain on a simple job. He must find and kill two women, no questions asked.
BANG! BANG! Mission accomplished, just like always. Story's over folks.
But this "simple job" just got complicated.
Standing in a pool of expanding blood, Cain has stepped onto the wheel of fortune and his life will spin in an entirely new direction.
As a consequence of this simple job, Cain now becomes the central figure in the battle to save the world from the impending apocalypse.
It's a job he didn't want, but is well suited to win.
We've raised enough money ourselves to finish 5 of our 7 chapters. We are looking to raise $15,000 of finishing funds for the last 100 pages of our project, which encompasses chapters 6 and 7. The funds will be used to pay for the:
- Kickstarter Prizes
- Kickstarter fees
We plan on announcing a publishing partner later in the year that will help us package and distribute our comic.
But since this book is 100% creator- owned, there's no publisher's financing. Our Kickstarter goal is enough to bridge the gap and get a copy of the first issue in the hands of readers this time next year.
Please check out our Chapter One's first twelve pages further down.
If you like what you see and read and want to see CAIN: FIRST BORN become a reality, we gratefully ask you to contribute at what ever level you can.
If you do, we have some great rewards for you. And remember: you're only charged if we make our funding goal.
But who are we to be asking complete strangers to support us?
My writing partner, Joe Kelbley and myself have been writing together for the last 15 years. In that span we've written numerous feature scripts, a book, and an award winning short film. Several of our scripts have gotten optioned, one has gotten made, SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE.
However, we had never written in the comic book/graphic novel medium, until we came up with CAIN: FIRST BORN. Cain was an anomaly. We came up with the idea over a decade ago and had tried to write the feature film version of it as a detective story, a horror story, an action film, etc...none of them were working. So, we shelved the idea for a while, until we decided to make it into a graphic novel. We thought that it was the best medium for our story. This is because the story we are creating has a vast mythology and we see it going further then just this one 300 page graphic novel. There are more stories to tell of Cain and this is the format we want to do it in.
We just created a Facebook Fan Page for this project and we will be updating it periodically with artwork at different stages in the process and updates about the project (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cain-First-Born/420847027952099?ref=br_tf). Please feel free to "like" us on Facebook and stay current on our progress.
FANBOY OVERKILL ABOUT CAIN
Unlike many of his biblical brethren, Cain had a direct speaking relationship with God. To him, God is the ultimate father figure. This relationship gives Cain a unique perspective. Unlike Atheists, who do not believe, and the religious, who have faith, Cain needs neither faith nor doubt. Cain knows God exists. But he hates him.
As the first born human from parents created by God, his natural strengths and abilities are greater than present-day humans. The curse has also given Cain additional abilities.
“And now art thou cursed from the Earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand. When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength. A fugitive and a vagabond shall thou be in the Earth.”
This curse has many consequences for Cain. As a restless wanderer, Cain has roamed the Earth unchanged for millennia. He does not sleep. He does not age. He does not forget a name, face, or fact that he encounters. To preserve his life, he heals much faster than others. He cannot die from the four earthly elements in the course of his wandering.
Before the curse, Cain was a farmer. He loved the smell of fresh-tilled soil, the feel of the vines between his hands, the beauty of bringing forth life from a seed. The curse robs Cain of this. His touch decays any living thing that grows from the ground: a rose, a tree, a blade of grass. Wine turns to ash in his mouth. An apple rots between bites. Bereft of these earthly pleasures, all Cain has left is the mark placed on him, the ultimate symbol of his fratricide.
WHAT IS THE MARK OF CAIN?
“And the Lord said unto him, “Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.”
This mark is more than just a tattoo or brand. It is the blood of Abel. It is Cain’s conscience -- a bleeding wound of grievance at the atrocities he has committed. The original mark on Cain’s body constituted the wounds Cain inflicted upon Abel when he struck him dead. But the mark changes. Any time Cain commits a great evil his mark flares and spreads. Over these many millennia, the mark has grown and changed to reflect Cain’s actions. Anyone he kills, he feels the pain of their death. The greater the injustice of the death, the greater the pain, and the greater the mark will change.
WHAT HAS CAIN DONE THROUGH THE AGES?
After his exile to Nod, East of Eden, Cain raised his two small children with his wife. Ageless and sterile from the curse, he watched his wife grow old and die, and then watched his children marry and have children of their own. But his progeny shunned him as an outcast. Soon, the bonds to humanity fell from Cain and he was forgotten into the pages of time. Alone and rejected, he had nothing left, but his curse.
Embracing his curse, Cain became what God had proclaimed him -- a killer. He killed and killed to show God what his proclamation had wrought upon the world. And each time Cain killed, his mark would flare in pain and he felt a connection with God that he thought he had lost. His actions were those of a forsaken child desperate for the attention of his father’s love.
Armies rose against Cain, but he vanquished them all under various names and countless flags. He was a scourge upon the land, attacking even the Pope’s own entourage. Eventually, his actions led to the creation of an organization dedicated to stopping him: The Penumbra. But if you want to know more about who and what the Penumbra are, you will have to contribute.

SAMPLE ARTWORK (first 12 pages of our Graphic Novel):
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest challenges in the comic book industry is time, and the management of it. This is a work-in-progress, and as with any work-in-progress, delays can happen at any stage in the process. To help mitigate those delays, as writers of the project, we have completely finished the 300 page book before coming to Kickstarter. Therefore, there will be no delays at the script phase. The only challenge we currently face is the supervision of the artwork and the on-time delivery of it, and the only potential delays we face are with the artwork.
We strategically came to Kickstarter with our project only once we had the first two chapters completed. We wanted to ensure the 100% commitment of our artistic team and a productive work flow amongst ourselves. Having artists in Spain, Germany, and Indonesia, we felt we needed to do this to ensure productivity and good time management. We took the risks first before approaching Kickstarter backers, as a way to have a better grasp on the real risks and challenges facing not only us, but our potential backers as well. And although this is our first comic book, we feel very confident that artwork delays will be minimal, although they do still exist.
We are 100% invested in this project financially and creatively. I mention this because unlike other celebrity based projects looking for financing, we personally have put up more than half the funding for this project ourselves, before coming to Kickstarter. We are simply looking for finishing funds. All this is to point out that we have as much, if not more, to lose as all of our backers. So all the risks our backers face, we face them too.
Please rest assured we plan to meet all of the upcoming challenges head on while doing whatever it takes to deliver the best work we can deliver. We are completely invested in this project and we hope you will enjoy what we created as much as we enjoyed creating it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
