Picture A Change is producing a feature length documentary film that will document human interest movements around the globe. Our purpose is to create a platform for marginalized communities to tell their stories, and to explore the positive aspects of the human spirit.

Each country will have its own segment focusing on unique solutions, but all stories will share a common theme: The resilience of the human spirit and its desire to live in a better world.

Our film is a journey through disparate and distinct regions, all facing their own social, economic, and environmental challenges. Each region also has its own community organizers working to overcome their challenges every single day. The liveliness of their spirit is not only improving their situations, but inspiring others to do so as well.

We will first go to the Mississippi Lower Delta where our subject, a strong and resilient African American woman, is building the first public library in her town of Webb, Mississippi. She believes in education as a pathway to empowerment for the disadvantaged. She sees the enlightening opportunities the library will provide as a great tool in overcoming ignorance. Racism is deeply ingrained in the city’s history, with Mississippi ratifying the 13th Amendment banning slavery as late as 2013. Our subject sees this new library as a way for future generations to move past these issues through increased access to knowledge and the written word.

In Nicaragua we will explore the realities and challenges facing indigenous peoples in a region on the Caribbean Coast. We will follow the story of an organization created specifically to address pervasive human rights abuses. The organization was started by an indigenous lawyer and local civil rights activist. Even in the face of subversion and violent threats, her work has garnered international support and empowered local communities in their struggle for clean water, healthy environments, and respect for their hard won land rights.

In the post-apartheid townships of South Africa, communities are still facing hardships like gang violence, poverty, and high instances of rape. It is hard for children especially to survive in this environment, but a small group of individuals created a school to help them not only survive, but thrive. We will be profiling the school and the individuals who run it, documenting the courageous, selfless nature of those creating solutions.

We then go to India where we will be following Lenin Raghuvanshi of People's Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) which works with Dalit communities – persons who are considered the lowest tier of India’s social castes, and many of whom are victims of modern day slavery. Access to education is scarce and human rights are routinely violated, yet there are still those willing to challenge pervading notions of superiority and status quo. Our contact is an award winning activist whose community organizing made him the target of a recent assassination attempt. We will focus on his revolutionary work and show why it has caused such an uproar among elites.

Travel arrangements are set and the project is well in motion. We have built strong relationships with each organization we plan to profile.

We need your help now for the final push in spreading news about all these inspiring movements. Together we can create a narrative journey through these experiences, discover the positive commonalities between so many people doing good, and share them with the world.

Risks and challenges

The risks and challenges are mostly physical. From covering land disputes in Nicaragua, to crime-ridden Cape Town, our crew acknowledges the harsh realities we will be facing as foreigners with expensive equipment traveling through poor areas. There are inherent risks to venturing off the beaten path, but we believe this is necessary for highlighting the resilient characters and communities around the world who do their work without recognition.

Our team relies on your contributions and the strength of the bonds with our subjects to ensure our security during the journey. Your donations will go towards reliable transportation and local guides to ensure all parties are safe during the trip.

Another challenge will be staying connected with the rest of the world, our crew back home, all of you – without falling off the radar. In such rugged contexts, the crew will rely on social media and cyber communication to bring videos, photos, and writings of the adventurous production to folks back home and around the globe.

Despite the risks and challenges, there is no question that this film will be made. This is a commitment to our partners, our viewers, and ourselves. We look forward to you joining our efforts.
