About

Lands Unknown is a cinematic historical RPG set in the early 1800s, the end of the Age Of Sail. The world is vast and detailed, everything is historically accurate, and cities are realistically scaled. The game mainly focuses on exploration and sailing, but there are many ways to play.

Get a fast, sturdy ship and sail to India for silk and spices. Explore the American West with nothing but your horse. Become a pirate, capturing merchant ships. Lead camel caravans across the desert, fighting sandstorms and other dangers along the way. You could even lead an expedition to the South Pole!

The game will feature 50 or more ship types to choose from, 50 or more cities to visit, and a massive, part procedural, part handmade Earth to explore. All of this and more will be brought to life with beautiful, film like visuals and audio.

We're on Steam Greenlight and IndieDB!

A downloadable tech demo can be found on our updates page. This is not by any means a complete gameplay experience, but rather something to show that all the videos you have seen are real gameplay.

The demo is Windows only and requires a relatively fast PC to run. Total space required is 20 GB.

There are several scenarios in the demo. The scenarios include two ship tours, an open area to explore, a sea battle, and a docking scenario.

  • Next gen graphics - powered by Unreal Engine 4
  • Seamless docking - approach a city and dock wherever you want, without any loading screens
  • A massive, detailed world - nearly 40 million square miles in size (Large game worlds are around 30-50 square miles)
  • Detailed ship models - complete with interiors that you can walk through and customize
  • Persistence - When you log out your ship will continue moving and will still be visible to other players (though they can't do anything to you when you are offline)
  • Multiplayer cooperative sailing - one player steers the ship, another operates the sails, and several more could operate the cannons
  • Believable locations - the world is historically accurate and cities are created based on old paintings and photos
  • Overland travel - walk or ride an animal through deserts, mountains,  jungles, rivers and fields to reach your destination
  • Physical cargo - instead of loading up your ship on a menu, you actually carry barrels, bags and boxes of whatever you bought and drop them anywhere on the ship
  • Survival features - your character will need to eat, so you will have to either pack enough food or eat whatever you find along the way
  • Name landmarks - If you are the first player to discover a landmark, such as a cave, you can name it whatever you want(landmarks are procedurally placed and there will be so many that all discovering all of them will take years, no matter how many players look for them)
  • Bounty records - If you attack and board other players' ships you will be listed as a pirate and other players will be rewarded for sinking you
  • Ship customization - Ships are completely customizable, all components can be swapped out
  • Realistic navigation - You will find your way at sea using instruments on your ship, as there is no game map

The game world will have an area of nearly 40 million square miles, or 1/5 the size of Earth. This size will provide a realistic sense of scale, while not being too big to travel accross. Travelling from New York to Philadelphia on horseback will take 20-30 (actual, real) minutes of playing, and on a fast ship the trip will take about an hour. On foot it will take almost 3 hours.

The world will be, for the most part, procedurally generated. Parts of cities and special locations will be handmade, and the transition from procedural to handmade environments will be completely seamless.

There are roads throughout the world, these you are not required to follow but will get you from city to city faster(the other option is wandering out into the wilderness and getting lost!)

Each part of the world has it's own distinct feel. Your home city will begin to feel like home, and countries far away will feel strange and unfamiliar.

Lands Unknown is set in the early 1800s, and huge parts of the world are still uncharted and unexplored. You can explore these areas on foot or on an animal, and a map will be created as you go. After the maps are completed, you can sell them or keep them to use yourself.

The uncharted areas include the American West, the Amazon jungle, the Andes mountains, Japan, islands in the Pacific, Antarctica, and most of Asia

Sailing the main focus of Lands Unknown, and we are putting a lot of work into making sure the ships handle realistically and look as good as possible.

Instead of seeing your ship from a third person perspective and controlling everything with the keyboard, you will have to actually walk around your ship, furling and unfurling the sails, turning the wheel, lowering the anchor, even firing the cannons one by one. On small ships sailing by yourself is easy, but larger ships are much more difficult to sail alone.

The final game will have 50 ships to choose from, and they are divided up into 5 tiers with 10 ships per tier. In each tier there are ships for several different purposes, battle type ships with more cannons, trade type ships that can carry more cargo, exploration type ships that can go into shallow waters and dock in more places, and pirate type ships that allow you to more easily board enemy ships.

If you own multiple ships, you can sail them in fleets either by hiring AI characters to control them, or by letting other players control them.

You can hire either AI characters or real players(if you find anyone willing to work for you) to do certain jobs, like operating the sails and firing cannons.

You will use instruments to navigate and find your way, as there is no game map!

Level 1: These ships are the smallest and the least expensive. They cannot hold much food or cargo and will capsize in high waves. These ships are good for short trips along the coast, and for travelling on rivers. They cannot carry enough food to cross the ocean. If you don't start with a ship, it will take 10 hours of playing or more before you can buy a Level 1 ship.

Some examples of Level 1 ships are tartanes, dhows, and sloops.

(In-Game Screenshot) A Level 1 ship (a tartane)
(In-Game Screenshot) A Level 1 ship (a tartane)

Level 2: These ships are much larger and much more expensive than Level 1 ships. These ships can go much further, they hold enough cargo to make a large profit by trading, and they can easily defeat Level 1 ships in battle. Level 2 ships can make the Atlantic crossing in good weather and steady winds, but if a storm comes you will likely capsize.

Some examples of Level 2 ships are Chinese junks, galliots, and schooners.

(In-game screenshot) A Level 2 schooner leaving an island
(In-game screenshot) A Level 2 schooner leaving an island

Level 3: These ships are large, fast and sturdy, can travel all over the world, are great in battle, and can hold huge amounts of cargo. If you start the game with nothing, it will take at least 100 hours of playing before you earn enough to get one of these. Even with these ships storms are a problem, but if you know what to do you won't capsize.

Some examples of Level 3 ships are sloops of war, brigs, and light frigates.

(In-Game screenshot) A Level 3 ship(a frigate)
(In-Game screenshot) A Level 3 ship(a frigate)

Level 4: These ships are much more diverse than Level 3 ships, which means that trade type Level 4 ships will look and perform very differently than battle type Level 4 ships. Once you have a Level 3 ship, it will take at least 50 hours of play before you are able to purchase a Level 4 ship.

Some examples of Level 4 ships are heavy frigates, two-decker ships of the line, and Indiamen.

(In-game screenshot) A Level 4 Turkish galley
(In-game screenshot) A Level 4 Turkish galley

Level 5: These ships are the best in the game. One Level 5 ship will cost the same as ten thousand Level 1 ships. Trade type Level 5 ships are extremely fast, fast enough to cross the Atlantic in just one (real life) day. Battle type Level 5 ships have three decks, up to 100 cannons, and can destroy any enemy(even other Level 5 ships!) Pirate type Level 5 ships are agile, maneuverable, and allow you to easily board other ships.

Some examples of Level 5 ships are clippers, galleasses and 1st rates

Another possibility in Lands Unknown is becoming a merchant. You can make huge profits trading overland or by ship. You can have a dedicated trading ship, or you could bring some trade goods along just to make a little extra profit while doing something else.

Instead of buying and selling goods on menus, you have to actually carry boxes and barrels of whatever you bought onto your ship and place them somewhere safe. If you are using pack animals you can either carry goods in carts or saddlebags.

You can make a profit by trading no matter how few items you buy and sell. If you just started the game and you want to get right into trading without earning money for a ship or pack animal, you can actually carry trade goods to other cities or countries on foot! (although extremely slow, doing this actually can make a profit)

You start the game with a very small amount of money(if your pledge is Boatswain or higher, you will start with more). This money is given to you in the currency of the country you started in.

When you earn more money, you receive it in the currency of the country you earned it in.

Here's an example: Let's say you have the Helmsman pledge. You just started out, and you chose Constantinople as your home city. First you would go to the Shipbuilder and use your two Level 2 ship permits to build two Level 2 ships of your choice.

Now you have two ships waiting in the harbor, you can either board one and set sail, or, if you would rather travel overland, you can go back to the Shipbuilder and sell him your ships. He would give you the money in Ottoman Lira, and then you could spend it on camels and some Ottoman specialty goods.

Whether you take your goods by ships or overland, when you arrive(let's say you were going to India) then you can go to a market and sell your Ottoman goods. The money will be given to you in Indian Rupees, and then your money will be in two different currencies.

There is no limit to the number of currencies that you can have at once, but if you want to convert your money then you will have to go to the bank in a large city.

(In-Game screenshot) HMS Victory loading up in Havana

In Lands Unknown you can play all kinds of jobs and missions. Some have a goal, others go on until you quit them. You can get jobs from NPCs in cities, or from other players. If you start without a ship or another way to get around, jobs are the only way to make money.

Sometimes doing jobs will get you items that you can't get anywhere else, like doing a job for a ship chandler might get you a special part for your ship, doing a job for someone who is making a glider might get you one, and so on.

To get a job, you need to walk around cities and look for a person(this can be an AI character or a player) with the job symbol.

You could go to the docks and get a job on a ship, which wouldn't pay much but would give you a chance to explore and find a better job in another city. You could be assigned to deliver an important letter to another city within a certain amount of time. You could even be hired by explorers searching for treasure in the jungle!

As a pirate in Lands Unknown, you will chase down passing player controlled ships, use ropes to board them, and take everything you can. When you attack a player, they can offer you money, try to run away, or stay and fight you. You can sell the loot on the black market or stash it away in a hideout.

The best pirate ships are fast(you don't want anyone getting away), maneuverable(you can only board if you are in the right position), and durable(you will probably be fired at). You will need to take these into consideration when buying a pirate ship.

With a good ship you can make a lot of money being a pirate, but there are consequences too. Once you attack and steal from a player, you will be listed as a pirate. You will not be allowed into cities(except for a few pirate towns). Your ship will only fly a black flag.  Other players will even try to sink you for a reward.

You can also attack and sink non player ships, but this will also cause you to become a pirate. When you successfully board and defeat an AI ship,  you will be able to steal it and use it. If you defeat an entire fleet without sinking them, you will be able to steal and use every ship.

All ships in the game will be made out of the same components, and these components can be interchanged allowing for in-depth ship customization. There will be five different types of components, so you will be able to choose from five different masts, lanterns, figureheads, or whatever ship part you are customizing.

The Captain's Cabin, where you will be spending most of your time at sea, will also be completely customizable. You can put furniture, navigational instruments, and decorations anywhere you like.

You can also use wood planks and metal poles, which you can get from shipyards, to build small additions on the deck of your ship. You can build anything from a small plank to a whole house on your ship!

This is the minimum amount that we need to create the game with all the basic features. The game will support Windows, Mac, Linux and VR.

Lands Unknown will be optimized for low end PCs and released on Xbox One and PS4.

Lands Unknown will be translated into several other languages.

Lands Unknown will include an offline story mode! The storyline will have multiple endings, and there will be several storylines to choose from, each taking place in a different part of the world.

You will be able to build on land as well as on your ship. In uncharted areas there will be stacking-style building, so you can cut down trees and get planks and logs, or cut ice cubes and cylinders out of frozen lakes. In uncharted areas you can build anywhere, but in charted areas you will have to purchase land to build.

You can build anything from a small cabin to an ice palace!

A fantasy expansion will be available for free to all Kickstarter backers! The fantasy expansion adds another world, some new ships, and a new way to play! The world will be much, much smaller than the normal world, but there are many biomes, all kinds of cities, otherworldly creatures, and unique ships.

Some of the cities will be small fishing villages, others will be huge and full of towers and palaces, but all of them will be completely unlike anything you have seen before in a game. There won't be any medieval style towns, there won't be any dragons, none of the traditional fantasy stuff will be in this world.

Exploring our world, where you have some idea of where things are, is one thing, but exploring a fantasy world where you have no idea what you might come across is something completely different!

Cities will be mostly handmade rather than procedurally generated, and they will be so detailed you can spend hours walking through them and not see everything. Each street will be unique, and each city will have a different feel.

We will use motion capture for higher quality animations and enhanced gameplay.

Everything you see here was put together by one person in a little over a year and a half. Very little was spent on development up until now.  Currently Lands Unknown is being developed using Unreal Engine 4, which has so far been perfect for this game.

If the game is funded, the money will be used mainly to hire more artists and programmers, and to purchase the necessary software and equipment.

What we plan to do is first create a small area of the world by hand, and use that while we work on game mechanics. Once we have the basic game mechanics finished(trading, sailing, etc) then the pre-alpha version will be released(around July 2017).

After the pre-alpha release, we will begin working on the entire procedural world and add some procedural cities, which will be available in the alpha release(around December 2017)

Once the alpha is out, we will work on adding the remaining cities and ships. We will make as much of the world as we can by hand, and we will add as much detail as possible. The game mechanics will be worked on some more, jobs and missions will be added, more playable characters will be added, and bugs will be fixed until around December 2018, when the final game will be released.

Working on assets for Lands Unknown
Working on assets for Lands Unknown

Crowdfunding is necessary to fund games like Lands Unknown, ambitious, innovative games publishers and investors don't want to risk supporting. With Kickstarter we can both fund the game, and prove to publishers and investors that there is real interest in a game like this.

We are also using Kickstarter because we want the game to be community driven and independent, we want to make the game we envisioned and not the game that publishers want.

Lands Unknown is Joshua Giles' latest project. He has worked on games for over 6 years and has experience in nearly all aspects of game development, including animation, rigging, modelling, UV unwrapping, programming, and lighting.

Samples of his work can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/user/dogsofknowledge

Risks and challenges

We have actually done a lot in the last two years, spending next to nothing and only working during free time, so we are confident that if the Kickstarter campaign succeeds we will be able to deliver all that we promised.

The biggest risks are probably that the game will come out late, or that we will hit a roadblock and be unable to add a certain feature.

Developing a game is always challenging and the unique features of Lands Unknown make it even more so.

The main challenges we will face are:
- Our engine is built for traditional level design techniques and will need to be modified

- Creating a world with artist-directed procedural generation

- Finding a balance between fun and realism on long journeys

- Handling servers and multiplayer features in a huge world with thousands of ships sailing at once

- Keeping the amount of hard drive space needed under 50 GB

We've looked into all of these challenges and don't expect to run into any major problems, but if we do, we will definitely let you know about it.
