About my work:
The voice is a powerful instrument, and its abilities to convey meaning, imagery and emotion have myriad forms.
In this work, I try to bring forward textures and expressions that are uncharacteristic to the voice, and paint an abstract reflection of the world around us, intertwined with the wide palette of colors and emotions within us.
These last few years I have been researching the various sounds my voice is capable of producing. I play with various song forms, gestural sounds, movement with voice, negating or complementing expressions, and language, in an attempt to unravel our habits of interpreting song and sound.
In my exploration I am also interested in the music of different cultures that have evolved along differing geographical and topographical terrain, and how phonetics developed to emulate their surrounding sounds - trying to emulate the sounds surrounding me.
Vougheauxice - represents all the unpronounced phonemes that need attention!
My solo vocal pieces are scored and performed in ways that allow the natural rhythm of breath and conversation to dictate their duration and progression. The scores are often graphic, using notation proportional to my inner timing at any given moment - meaning there will never be an exact version of the same piece twice.
Because of the dynamic range of the pieces, we will be recording in various locations that befit our needs. We'll be in the recording studio, a solar powered home in Joshua Tree, tunnels, and canyons. The natural acoustics of the space become part of the composition as well as the microphone itself, which is used at times as an instrument.
My history in a nutshell:
I was born in New York City, by far the last of 3 children, to a Yemenite Israeli family. I attended an orthodox Jewish school through the 8th grade, studied theater in high school, sang in a military band in the Israeli army (which I started), trained as a yoga instructor, got a BFA in jazz vocal performance and an MFA in composition and alternate dimensions. I dreamed of being a Hollywood actress as a kid and now I live in Los Angeles as an experimental artist. It all makes sense.
Risks and challenges
There is always a risk and challenge to face, especially when translating a performing, experiential art, and limiting it to a single medium. Something is lost and something is gained. Space, silence, time and atmosphere are compromised, yet a new form is presented, fit for only listening and imagining.
In order to best preserve the natural quality of the voice and the integrity of the live performance, I am working with an engineer who has taken great care in the delicacy of the recording process. Many sounds emerge which are unique to the recording, affected by the equipment and amplification.
The support earned here will go towards further enhancing that delicate process, by enabling the ideal environment to overcome challenges, and allowing the wide range of sounds and textures to transcend the physical cd.
