About

IMMERSEA: SUBVERSIVE SUBMERSIBLES DETAILS

ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles is water-adapted augmented reality (AR). This may include aquatic AR goggles, immersive AR environments and AR submergibles. ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles are installation experimentations creative real time and re-mashed audio visual overlays for experience alteration and tabulation of reactions. Please help us support ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles Research and Biodiversity Bank Themed Sustainable Miniature Golf Course!

Centered around a pop-up sustainable miniature golf course made for recording biodiversity, we plan to transmit live mixed Video Jockey footage to our submerged artists in the Andaman Sea. There are many other aspects of this project to explore, including: sound arts, performance, interdisciplinary arts, behavioral, cognitive and mad studies. We bring a philosopher along to unpack a psychoacoustic analysis of augmented underwater experience. With enough funding we plan to use zorb balls and biosensors which may lead us into immersive use of sounds and tactility drawn in real time from the biodiverse environment. WE may even build a version of ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles underwater and semi-submerged experiences of Augmented Reality for live human/nonhuman interaction.

ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles is about underwater and semi-submerged experiences of Augmented Reality. We are looking to report back on the experience of doubling our sound and vision under the sea. Centered around a pop-up sustainable miniature golf course made for recording biodiversity, we plan to transmit live mixed Video Jockey footage to our submerged artists in the Andaman Sea.

HEAR is Hear AR
HEAR is Hear AR

We have all been invited as a group to Thailand. We have been accepted with our projects to join THE DIGITAL NATURALISM CONFERENCE https://www.dinacon.org/ This is a conference that emphasizes Field Biology, Interaction Design and Wild Hacking. It is held in Koh Lon, Thailand this summer. DinaCon is run by Andrew Quitmeyer, PhD (www.digitalnaturalism.org) and Tasneem Khan (www.earthcolab.com) We plan to be in Thailand June 10 – June 24, 2018 and on the island of Koh Lon, Thailand from June 13 – June 20 but the dates may be extended an extra week.

IMMERSEA TEAM Kira, Jade, Oya, Adam and Izzy are a group of multimedia artists, bioartists, psychologists, biologists and free thinkers ready to collaborate in the ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles node. We are talented at manipulating live feed footage from environmental settings. We are building submerged interactive/immersive sound and video art installations using site specific sonic and tactile sources. We plan experiments in psychological experience and altered states of consciousness. The output settings are numerous, and with adequate funding, will include 3D object creations for ready made Augmented Reality headsets. We are dedicated to DIY on island, rugged prototyping but we are also flexible with any ready made technics we can bring along. We plan to use a variety of recording devices along with Ableton Live/Max/arduino to program/hack naturally occurring forms/sounds in the acoustic environment and build them into custom interfaces/midi controllers for human sensual interaction. The goal is to find creative ways to engage with biodata, including facilitating a media feedback loop between human, animal, and technological entities. The ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles team plots to evolve this into a durational performance of human & non human participants that could be fed/broadcasted live as it evolves throughout the duration of our presence at the conference.

We are running a Kickstarter to raise funds. We are rather un-funded and that’s why we decided to crowd source. We set our limit at $1000 to insure we would get some money for airfare. We would like to raise $5000 or more.

"I want to be a Human Barometer"

LIST OF MATERIALS FOR EXPERIMENTATION:

RANGING FROM $1000 TO ~$10000 DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH MONEY WE RAISE

DIY AR VJ Wireless System: $1000-$10000 includes:

Waterproof Speakers, Wireless/bluetooth transmission, Cell Phones, Sustainable lightweight shell, Underwater Masks – creative waterproofing in general, Video Jockey System with live sonic and 3D inputs (i.e. VDMX), sustainable floatation coordination, Unity or Other open source AR software access and study, total 3d immersive and responsive soundscape development, SciArtistic time and effort rewards, mockup pre-tests, planned epic fails, computers, documentation, Public relations and post-production.

Examples of expenses:

Zorb balls – $555 X 2 = $1110

Antique Diving Helmets – ~$300 X 2 = 600

Sustainable Miniature Golf Biodiversity Centre $155 – $355

TOTAL NEEDS: $7000 TO $17000. WE HAVE LISTED LESS THAN WE NEED BECAUSE WE WANT TO AT LEAST GET 3 RT TICKETS OUT OF THIS KICKSTARTER BUT IF WE END UP WITH $170000.00, I AM SURE WE CAN FIGURE OUT HOW TO WORK THAT IN (SEE FUNDRAISING).

This is a Super Dream Team: We want funding but we also kick ass!

If we raise up to $5000 it will go for ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles Airfare, Lodging and Food

$5000 – $10000 we will dedicate anything above $5000 for ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles equipment, documentation and post production

$10000 – $30000 we will form ISSAR LLC the ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles AR startup company and work together on this project beyond the scope of Dinacon.

$30000 – $60000 We will have a working prototype head-gear and a game proof of concept improved from our research with more depth research into the psychological data mining of the results of our research by August 2020

$60000 – $160000 We will make a floating international boat lab for the study of ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles and go Nomad on our research way.

WE have Goals and Methods for three experiments:

Eye Candy Disruptor

EcoSensual Synesthesia

Gamification of Risk

WE would like to run these experiments on Koh Lon in Thailand as a part of Dinacon.

The extent of our data as art ratio (D/A) is dependant on funding. As you can see the experimental designs are complete but there are quite a few steps that are only available to us with significant backing.

SUSTAINABLE MINI GOLF The Node of ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles is also spearheading the first ever Sustainable Miniature Golf Course, now with a Biodiversity Bank Theme!

Miniature golf is great low impact fun especially if it is sourced from local and sustainable materials. So yes, our node hosts a fun, social outpost made from crafted natural golf balls (baby casaba), DIY golfclubs (bamboo) and temporary redesign of loosely themed nature. The Sustainable Miniature Golf Course is an interface to teach-in about biodiversity, human gene editing and bioethics. It is also a chill-out node for ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles refueling, open talk about theory and practice, a think tank area hatch bioart ideas, etc.

The ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles Biodiversity Bank Themed Sustainable Miniature Golf is a home base for our ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles node as well as the source mixing and wireless beaming for our remixed Immersea databank. Beginning with local Koh Lon mangrove, rainforest and coral reef biomes, this minimal impact portable eco-minigolf course also houses the qualitative and quantitative ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles library of biodiversity.

The ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles Biodiversity Bank Themed Sustainable Miniature Golf Node is the AR-VJ immersive transmission station to our underwater ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles Human Subjects. We beam our tracks for output into the Subversive Submergibles UX AR underwater or semi-submerged transmissions from this central station. Our video, audio, photo and written collection of ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles biodiversity will be kept in a water proof lab book within a sculpted Library prop part of the nomadic minigolf course. Our media collection in mangrove, rainforest and coral reef biome interfaces will be written about as they are doctored for AR. Our tracks for output into the ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles are in the Biodiversity Bank Themed Sustainable Miniature Golf Library which functions as a VJ home base for UX AR underwater or semi-submerged transmissions.

The ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles Biodiversity Bank Themed Sustainable Miniature Golf is a space for meeting to talk about genetic intuition. Lets talk about how the genes for the natural excesses of exuberant traits in the tropics might be pasted into the human genome. The Public Lab Book includes a tabulation and interpretation of Natural Excesses and Exuberant Traits. The ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles open lab book will be on hand for editing as a part of the miniature golf course. WE create a Collaborative Library of field notes detailing conceptual aesthetic BioBanks for Future Human/Nonhuman Germline Hybrid Experiments in Human Inherited Genetic Modification. What do you think the range of possible future bodies is? Which GMO humans should be included in the Transgenic Human Genome Project (THGP)? What can the biodiversity of Koh Lon and the Andaman Sea tell us about the range of potentials, enhancements and options for future human anatomies?

Our open source ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles proprietory video, audio and photo collection of biodiversity will be kept in a water proof lab book within a sculpted minigolf mushroom prop. This is a part of the nomadic The ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles Biodiversity Bank Themed Sustainable Miniature Golf course. Our media collection in mangrove, rainforest and coral reef biome interfaces will be written about as they are doctored for AR. We will make tracks for output into the ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles. The Biodiversity Bank Themed Sustainable Miniature Golf Library and can function as a VJ home base for UX AR underwater or semi-submerged transmissions.

More about our research for the in depth investor:

EYE CANDY DISRUPTOR

Experiment One: Immersea Eye Candy Disruptor

Goals: Through the taking over of the augmented visual and audio field with Live VJ Blipvert Video Monitor Exposure Therapy, we plan to modulate variables such as: Percentage of audio visual augmentation (loudness and field of vision superimposed), speed of editing-jumpcutting, strobic/distorted sonic and visual time alterity, and applied repetition media regimes. As a return we plan to monitor reaction to live remashed madvertisments, focusing on Annoyance, Habituation and Recall.

Methods: Much of our ‘data’ is based on pre and post surveys of human performance volunteers including qualitative and quantitative empirical collection points. This is compared to motion analysis of video documetation of body language tracking. With the right amount of funding we will go beyond simple motion into emotionally deep learning using facial recognition software, eye tracking, blink assessment and live cortisol level monitoring. We would like to amass full physiological data to go with our biopsyche theme. For now, we are considering using binaural new age meditation with 31% translucent clouds as a control to compare to our repetative, strobic, vaporwave, remash noise ratios.

ECOSENSUAL SYNESTHESIA

Immersea: EcoSensual Synesthesia

Goals: We intend create an instrument inhabitable – the semi-submerged wireless human augmented reality zorb ball interface – to measure sonic arousal in a spherical 360 degree sound space that is semi submerged with user controlled motion and multisense intensities.

Methods: In order to transmit the sensual sounds of the island into a semi-submerged wireless human augmented reality zorb ball interface, we will live transmit six tracks to 6 speakers in the Zorb Ball (Front, Back, Up, Down, Left, Right). These sounds will be of Koh Lon local sounds. The soundscapes will either be made pre-recorded from digital audio field recordings or streamed live from sites of interest in the island ecosphere. Some projection of videos emphasizing sensual interaction with the island flora and fauna may also be projected in, on or out of our semi-submerged wireless human augmented reality zorb ball interface. WE are more interested in smell, taste, CNS nerve stimulating (touch) and proprioception for this experiment. With the right funding there is instrumentation used to collect data to measure arousal, for instance a penile or clitoral plethysmograph, as well as a electromyograph for rythym contraction data, Doppler velocimetry penis cuff/sleeve etc. but these are only available if we receive extra funding and we are interested in these types of techno weather reports but less for sexual response data, more likely we are all into sensual psychophysiology arts.

GAMIFICATION OF RISK

Immersea: Gamification of Risk

Goals: This experiment is about the level of virtual overtaking of the actual is possible by sudden and incremental alarming risk suggestion. We are looking at demonstrating extreme what ifs, neurotic paranoia and underwater fear factors in a way that causes panic.

Methods: The intention is to compare notes on threatcasting of augmented reality with innate media potential to induce panic attacks. Working with the generation of Psychotic states or schizogenesis are attempted by overlaying the audio visual experiences of emergencies. So, this is predominantly a genre of overlaid media to be explored. Flashing lights, loud voices giving orders, warnings and crashed impeded glitch audiovisual environments are increasing (possibly in relation to heart beat) until a breaking point is reached. Underwater related themes are appropriate in the Immersea context, i.e. sensory emergency shark attack (starring shark boy TBA) etc.

Our Discussions and Conclusions remain to be seen but we are a smart and savvy crew with many insights into the borderlands between art and science. Our lab book will be part of our final publication. Please help us support ImmerSea: Subversive Submersibles Research and Biodiversity Bank Themed Sustainable Miniature Golf Course!

Q: What is the Digital Naturalism Conference or Dinacon?

From the DINACON Site:

“Join us for the first Digital Naturalism Conference! You will get to live with a diverse group of professionals from around the world and explore natural environments and topics such as art, technology, field biology, and design.

This event is quite different from traditional conferences! In the way that we have explored digital design for naturalist field expeditions with our Hiking Hacks, this conference investigates interactive tool-making in the setting of our own DIY biological field station.

We chose our location so that you can do both terrestrial and marine exploration! We will have access to nearby water bodies and inland forests to explore. Plus there are many groups nearby through which we might charter ships to explore deeper in the ocean.”

This is an email that each of our group got from Andy and Tasmeen:

“Hi! This email is to let you know that your application has been accepted to the Digital Naturalism Conference!

We will be following up with additional information regarding how to pay the 20$ USD deposit, and other important information about your visit!

Congrats, we look forward to working with you on our island! Please stay tuned for more info!

Andy (and Tasneem)”

Q: What is Augmented Reality (AR) to Us? Augmented Reality is a super-imposition of digital media onto the natural world for both Computer aided User Deprogramming Experience (UDX) as well as push-advertisment styled media as an undersea layered-on disruptor of immersive relaxation (i.e. a needless stressor or stim excess).

Q: How and Why are We Using AR?

This project engages with topics of behavioral immersion by connecting environmental and experiential bio-data-tics across human, animal, and technological populations. Here, media manipulation serves to make environmental and biological information experientially available, stimulating curiosity and interest previously inaccessible to large populations.

Q: What Is Our Experimental Design?

To start off with, this is an art and science collaboration built on ideas of bioart and virtual or augmented reality. The Submerged augmented reality experiences: Snorkle, Scuba, Zorb Ball and/or Antique Diving Helmet

The semi-submerged augmented reality experiences: conducted within the clear bubble container of a Zorb Ball. Once inside the clear plastic bubble and set to sea, the field agent will observe underwater, above water, and watery realities that are augmented with live media sent from the On-Land On-Line MiniGolf Lab Base

Sound and video collection on island are added to our VJ library for Live VJ AV UX in AR.

TERMS KEY AV = Audio Visual AR = Augmented Reality VR = Virtual Reality VJ= Video Jockey XR = Extended Reality UX = User Experience UI = User Interface

Risks and challenges

What we are promising is a finished project during our stay at DinaCon. This is like an outdoor Hackathon that wants fast experimentalism and fast turnaround. If someone gets cold feet or a high fever or the fates have them unable to make the escape velocity, we have to be able to carry on without them. Barring unforeseen physical or mental illness striking more than three of us, we can complete!

What are the official “rules” of the conference?

1. You must complete something. Aim big, aim small, just figure out a task for yourself that you can commit yourself to that you can accomplish during your time at the conference. It can be any format you want: sculpture, a movie, a poem, a fingerpainting, a journal article – you just have to finish it!
