The Power of One Coin is a short film tackling the challenging subject of mental health in our society. It aims to portray that small acts of kindness can have huge effects on people's lives, especially those suffering from a mental illness. On the worst days, a small act of kindness can even have the power to save a life.
The story follows five characters who have never met before, and seemingly have nothing in common. This all changes however when one day their lives become intertwined, by a simple coin that travels through the hands of each person.
We see how for each character, the coin plays a crucial part in encouraging small acts of kindness. But what they don’t know, is that kindness is powerful, and small, selfless acts can have a hugely positive impact. Although they are all suffering in some way, it only takes a single moment for everything to change.
We’ve seen countless documentaries, films and series about the issues with the healthcare systems, governments and with the ideals of our societies surrounding the topic of mental health. Those are extremely important, but they can leave people feeling overwhelmed, hopeless and feel that they are powerless to make a difference.
The Power of One Coin is not about politicians or doctors or huge groups of people and societies or even simply about people suffering from a mental illness. This is a film about me and you. We want to create an inspiring story that will put the power and hope back in the hands of individual people. We feel that there is a huge need to show everyone that they as individuals can change the lives of those affected by mental illness by simple everyday actions.
You can make a difference.
The most important element for us is to portray mental illness and the issues surrounding the subject in a realistic and ‘non-triggering’ way. This is why we’ve been working closely with MIND and SANE to create believable characters and a genuine story.
The second aspect is to create a moving and compelling story. This is where the cinematography, production design, and acting are absolutely crucial. We’ve been working closely as a team over the last couple of months to make sure that all departments work together to make the best story possible.
We are strong believers in the fact that we can all come together to initiate the change that our society needs. Art has a huge impact on people’s lives - that's why it is so important that we continue to create and share inspiring stories. It counts, it has an impact, it is needed.

Risks and challenges
The main challenge will be to make sure that we portray all the mental illnesses in the film accurately and without stereotyping. In order to do this we have been in touch with charities such as MIND and SANE who have read and approved our script. They will also be ensuring the actors all have the knowledge to portray the mental illnesses correctly.
The second biggest challenge will be to make sure that the message of the film is powerful and emotional but that it's not 'triggering' to those who suffer from mental illnesses. We want to make a film that will help those who suffer and those who have experienced mental health problems as well as for those who know very little about them and want to learn.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
