Contrary to popular belief the French did not stop fighting after the fall of France in the summer of 1940, French troops fought around the globe against a wide variety of enemies on several different continents, nor did they all fight for De Gaulle. Soldiers loyal to the Government of France fought bravely to defend their Empire from all invaders. They ended up fighting British and Commonwealth troops, the Americans, South Africans, Japanese, Germans and other Free French in a series of battles from border skirmishes in deepest Africa to resisiting full scale invasions in Syria, Vietnam, Madagascar and North Africa.
The goal is to create a range of 28mm Colonial French figures for the 2nd World War which are suitable for use in a wide variety of settings. The basic goal is to get 10 metal figures with a set of differing detached heads into production, allowing them to be made as regular colonial troops with either an Adrian or sun helmet, as French Foreign Legion in Kepis or as Senegalese Tirrallieurs in chéchia. The uniform is the 1937 summer dress which was issued widely in Syria, Madagascar and Indochina to all troop types. Should enough funds be raised support, command and artillery troops will be added to this project.
Skirmish 8 LMG
Senegalese in Chechia
The sculpts seen are resin masters from which production moulds will be made and mental miniatures cast from them.
The figure seen was moulded and cast in resin by Kamil Milaniuk from Poland and the objective is to use Kamil to create the entire range, ensuring a continuity of style across the board. Some examples of his work can be seen here:
Simple, it is too expensive to start a whole new range from scratch and people don't want to buy part of a range in the hope that further releases will happen, if they don't buy anything then the producer won't expand the range. This way everybody wins!

The crew will allow you to have an appropriate gun crew for your campaign.
What about the other troops such as the Spahi, Troupe Speciales and the other types? Are they going to appear in this Kickstarter?
No. This is my first Kickstarter project and I wish to keep it on a managable (and deliverable) scale. If this project is a success these troops and many more will be launched at a later date.
The cost for shipping is included in the pledge costs. Because we're shipping from the UK there won't be any hidden customs and import costs to the EU. All packages will be sent out via the Royal Mail. Please be aware that we are not responsible for any customs charges or import taxes though if you are outside the EU.
So where is the money going?
Sculptor and production fees take the lion's share. Kickstarter and other fees come to 10% of all backer contributions, Mould making is self explanatory and misc covers everything else.
Who am I?
Hi, my names Campbell and I am a wargamer. I first started playing with toy soldiers over 30 years ago with a copy of "Operation Warboard" by Gavin Lyall borrowed from my local library. Since then my love for the hobby has only become deeper and stronger. I'm currently a member of South East Scotland Wargames Club where I tend to play games mainly set in the 20th century but have been known to play Black Powder too. I'm increasingly attracted to the more obscure conflicts these days and have been planning this move into producing figures for some time now as everyone seems to cover the same old areas. Should this Kickstarter be successful I have plans for plenty of other periods of 20th century warfare once the French have been fuly explored that have either not been covered or have been barely scratched on the surface.
On the business side I have experience of running a small business before and also with larger organisations bringing various diverse elements together for roadshows so I know what lies ahead of me.
Personally I love to spend time with my family, mountain biking, reading anything from trashy alternative history to factual books about almost anything and walking a varying number of dogs, introducing kittens to the world outside and cleaning the fish tank. I also do the Scout accounts.
I'd like to publicly thanks my wife for her unstinting support in this endeavour, without her support it would have remained a dream.
I am very excited about this Kickstarter and look forward to plugging many more gaps in the market in the future. Thanks for taking the time to look at this campaign and if you're ever in Edinburgh pop down to the club for a game and a chat - all the details are on it's website.
Risks and challenges
There are two main challenges, I can't sculpt and I don't spin cast.
I am turning this to my advantage by hiring a sculptor whose work I like to produce figures of a high enough quality.
Casting will be done in the UK. By outsourcing the casting I can use the professional services of Griffin Studios who currently cast for a significant % of UK war games manufacturers. This will ensure that the castings are all of the highest quality and are produced in the most professional manner possible by a highly experienced team. It also allows access to their expertise to solve casting issues should they arise.
The main challenge will be in meeting the completion goal date of August 2015. I have very high expectations where production quality is concerned, so if I feel that the sculpts needs to be improved or polished at the cost of slight delays, I'll take this route & get it done right. I would rather give a long lead time and deliver early than promise an impossible delivery date.
What about vehicles?
There are no plans or intentions to produce any vehicles. The aim is to produce sculpts which are not available, not to reproduce items that exist already. The Vichy vehicles are produced by Scheltrum and mad Bob miniatures (Bob Emmerson) who is producing an increasing number of suitable items and seems likely to keep on expanding his range. Guns can be purchased from a number of sources and there are a wide range available, from 25mm ATG to 75mm and beyond.
There are still significant gaps in the wargames market which it is my goal to fill should this kick starter be successful. The near future goal is to finish developing a website so that sales can be done directly to customers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
