Following a successful tour in June 2013, vocal trio Royst and jazz sextet Metamorphic wish to record a collaborative album!
The tour coincided with the release of contemporary jazz/folk sextet Metamorphic's (www.metamorphic.org.uk) critically acclaimed second album, Coalescence, which garnered 4 star reviews from the likes of John Fordham (The Guardian), Pete Quinn (Jazzwise) and Brian Morton (Jazz Journal). Brian Morton later named Coalescence as his album of the year 2013. Coalescence has been described as 'dreamy and intense' (John Fordham); as 'ear-catching and compelling' (Pete Quinn); and as 'consistently absorbing' (Chris Parker). With Metamorphic bandleader Laura Cole knowing the members of Norwegian vocal trio Royst (www.roystrio.com) from her time in Leeds, they decided to create a tour where both groups would come together, writing new material and rearranging previous work. The lineup was made complete with very special guests Seth Bennett (www.sethbennett.com) on double bass and Ollie Dover (www.shatnersbassoonband.com) on bass clarinet. The result of this collaboration was a special musical chemistry, leaving a profound mark on all involved. With musicians who are Mercury-prize nominated, (Chris Williams from Led Bib), and with awards such as British Composer of the Year (Kerry Andrew) and Jazz Yorkshire Vocalist of the Year (Kari Nergaard-Bleivik) as part of this collaboration, this promises to be a very special recording. Here's a great review of the Royst/Metamorphic gig at the Vortex on 25/06/13, which was the official album launch gig for Coalescence (http://blueflamingo.eu/music/reviewmetamorphicroysttriovortex/).
We are determined to continue our journey!
The aim is to capture this in the studio. We would record the pieces played and developed as part of the tour, as well as including some new material, written by numerous members.
In order to do this, we need to raise funds to cover the costs. These include:
- booking a recording studio
- hiring a sound engineer
- mixing and mastering the record
- travel costs (especially Cecilie Giskemo in Royst who is flying over from Norway to record with us)
- rehearsal studio costs
- PR costs
Thanks for reading and we hope you can help us reach our goal!
Metamorphic are: Kerry Andrew, vocals (Juice); Chris Williams, alto (Led Bib); John Martin, tenor/soprano (The John Martin Quartet); Ton Greenhalgh, drums (Snack Family); Paul Sandy, double bass (The Rude Mechanicals); Laura Cole, piano/composer (Engine Room Favourites)
Royst are: Cecilie Giskemo (Suzy&2), Kari Nergaard Bleivik (Yorkshire Jazz Vocalist of the Year 2013) and Maria Jardardottir.
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges of this project is firstly bringing together 11 musicians from Leeds London and Oslo to record together! But we have managed to do this before for the tour, which was PRS supported, so we feel we are qualified to overcome this, having managed to organise it before. We've allowed a lead in time in between doing the recording (November) and the release (July 2015), in case there are delays with mixing/mastering.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
