About

We are about to take an alley in a wasted space between a grocery store and a coffee shop, full of shopping carts and dumpsters, and transform it into an innovative Pocket Park that will provide recreation, gathering space, and arts access for residents of Maple Valley WA. With about $25,000 already pledged from grants and local businesses, we are crowd-funding the remaining $43,000 necessary to complete the project for two reasons: First, the Pocket Park project is for and about community, and we want to give our community the chance to get behind it. Second--we are ready to pour concrete, and it's time  to come up with the rest of the cash!

The space is a long, narrow alley which residents tend to walk past without noticing its existence--it looks unloved and little-tended. But that's all over now! Working in collaboration with the Maple Valley Creative Arts Council, artist Kathleen Fruge-Brown has designed a complete makeover of the space. The Park's design addresses the following specific needs:

A Space for Reflection and Recreation

The Pocket Park is a gem for those needing a quiet moment in a stressful day. The design of the Park is based on three roundels connected by a serpentine path. At the entrance, the first roundel is a large circular graphic, the 'Ripple', in hand-painted stained-concrete. Leading onward past a circular rain garden, the path incorporates a children's hopscotch court to inspire some old-school play. The path then leads to a labyrinth, created in the pavement with glass mosaic. Our labyrinth is based on an ancient seed design; a meditative walk along its spiraling path brings you to a circular bench at its heart.

A Space for Gathering and Community

The seven curved benches and dozen or so boulders do more than provide seating--they are designed and located to encourage conversation and to allow small groups to use the Pocket Park for meeting. The boulders will be engraved with words of welcome, in English and in other tongues currently spoken as first languages by children in Maple Valley's Tahoma School District. The 'Ripple" graphic invites meditation on the theme of the individual's effect on the community: The three benches located near the center of the 'Ripple' will each bear one section of the motto "From each small act...the ripples spread...ever outward".

A Space for the Arts

The small stage at the far end of the Park is designed for lunchtime or summer evening concerts, poetry readings, etc. Maple Valley has a thriving music community, with local performances already occurring at the Arts Center and other community locales. This new venue will give more opportunities to local performers and will increase their audience by luring in shoppers who will stop to listen. A public artwork in its own right, the Park will also include brightly-colored children's mosaics in the hopscotch court and in game boards built into the benches.

Who's In Already?

We've received approximately $25,000 in generous donations so far. Our hats are off to:

Quality Food Centers, the Park's landowner;

4Culture (King County's art commission);

King County Council, Reagan Dunn

Wallace Foundation Initiative through the WA State Arts Commission, ArtsWa

City of Maple Valley;

Local donors.

Now it's your turn! If everyone who's ever walked past that unsightly alley gave us a dollar, we'd be over the top! But they might not, so go ahead and donate at any level you can.

Who Benefits?

Every individual who needs a moment and a space for beauty, play, or quiet reflection in the midst of his or her busy day. Every business in Wilderness Village, which, as an older shopping center, has been bypassed by recent development in the Four Corners area a mile down the highway. The Pocket Park will give Wilderness Village a unique calling card--its design and amenities will make it a destination, and bring traffic and business back to Wilderness Village. Ultimately, the town of Maple Valley benefits both in terms of economic vitality and quality of life.

Risks and challenges

We have planned for as little risk as possible, due to the comprehensive team ready and able to implement our pocket park. We have a top notch designer plucked from our local community, as well as, our contractor, another local resident. The City of Maple Valley has staff on board to offer us advice and assistance. The Transitions Program, for special needs students ages 18-21, in our local school district is poised and ready to be stewards of the rain garden in the pocket park. The team of architects, designers, contractors and engineers working on the construction of a new high school in our local school district have volunteered to be actively engaged in the implementation of the pocket park. With all the eager expertise surrounding the pocket park, we believe that the implementation will be successful with little hiccups along the way.
