How far would you go to live your dream?
I Want to be a Dancer is a documentary telling stories of strength, endurance and perseverance through an inside look of what it takes to be a competitive dancer.
Former Cast Member Malece Miller
We were lucky enough to have Malece Miller as a cast member in our documentary back in 2012. She has since gone on to the show "So You Think You Can Dance" and made it to the Top 12! Check out her audition from 2012
The Production Management team from Breaking Pointe: Season 2, Kelsey Daniels and Marcie Gibboney, along with Amber Strong, choreographer and artistic director, bring you face to face with the competitive world of dance. With the help from Emmy Award-winning Cinematographer, Jack Allred (The Generations Project), they will bring stories of sacrifice, struggle, and growth as revealed through the lives of dancers, each of whom represents a different style.
Our team will spend the next year with these dancers, chronicling the physical, emotional, social, financial and familial struggles they face as they compete with tens of thousands of other dreamers for a place in an industry where the median pay is less than $16 an hour and with one of the highest on-the-job injury rates in the world.
Why do they do it? And what does it take to reach this elusive goal? Interviews with choreographers, artistic directors, physicians, and professional dancers help explain what young dancers must be willing to do to reach their dreams.
We wanted to add some bonus rewards to everyone who has contributed so far and for those of you who will contribute soon!

One lesson these dancers have already learned: Sheer passion isn’t enough. No dancer succeeds without support from family, friends, mentors, trainers and fellow dancers.
Likewise, our passion for this story won’t bring it to fruition. That’s why we’re seeking your support. Our fund-raising goal is based on a budget for technology, music rights, and basic post-production services. If we can raise more than our goal, we can travel to dance competitions, hire a professional editor, a sound mixer, and additional camera support to follow our dancers to rehearsals, competitions, and to track their day-to-day lives in a way that provides the vital, nuanced moments that bring meaning to documentary storytelling.
When we held an audition to interview potential cast members, it was standing room only. Our biggest problem was the burden of choice: How would we decide from among so many amazing stories? With a limited crew — and a lot of favors — we were able to complete a trailer, and it became clear that our young cast was spot-on.
Of course, when you work on long-term film projects, things don’t always go so perfectly. We know that. That’s why we’re fortunate to have veteran leadership and mentorship, along with the enthusiasm of film newcomers, working on this project.
With our passion — and your support — this amazing story will be told.
