The SomniCloud is entirely customizable and intuitive to use. To set up, simply plug in the SomniCloud pods and place them on your night stand (mounts also included for alternative placements). Our Android or iOS app will take you through the step-by-step set up process (including integrating with Alexa and any supported smart home devices). The entire process takes under 5 minutes.

As our sensors recognize that you have fallen asleep, the SomniCloud will slowly fade out all light and audio stimuli. If you have a connected Ecobee or Nest thermostat, the SomniCloud will automatically adjust the ambient temperature to your desired setting. While this setting is customizable, we encourage selecting a temperature between 60-69 degrees, as this range has been shown to improve sleep cycle patterns.
Our unobtrusive sensors will track your sleep throughout the night. Because each pod contains a sleep sensor, the SomniCloud system can even track two sleepers at once! Perfect for couples looking to track their sleep without the hassle of wearable tracking devices.

The Smart Alarm takes into account your current sleep stage and begins administering a specialized binaural beat sequence to help ease your brainwaves to a frequency conducive to your lightest sleep stage.
At the same time, our pods will begin emitting short wavelength light that simulates the natural light cues found in an early morning sunrise. This light stimulus will signal to your brain to suppress melatonion levels, leading to a natural transition to wakefulness.
At just the right moment, the pods will begin administering a pleasant tone overlayed over the binaural beat sequence. This tone will gently increase in volume until you awaken. The Smart Alarm is designed to wake you up between 0-15 minutes before your preset wake time.

The companion app can also recall past night's data, so you can view any previous night as well as track sleep trends over days, weeks, months and years. The more you use the SomniCloud, the more valuable these insights can become. Eventually you can track seasonal changes as well as pinpoint inconsistencies in your sleep routine and the effect they may be having on your sleep.

Our founder, Dr. Michael Larson, is a mechanical engineer by trade (PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT). He has served in the Navy, participated in the private sector, and currently serves as a professor for the University of Colorado. Above all, however, he is an inventor and entrepreneur. From medical devices, to consumer products, to board games, Dr. Larson has been involved in a variety of product development fields and is the inventor of 7 different patents.
Dr. Larson turned his attention to the sleep industry in 2012 as he watched his daughter struggle with a debilitating sleep disorder and the nasty side effects of the so-called 'sleep aids' that were prescribed for her. In a search for alternatives, he found instead a market that had experienced little innovation outside of pharmaceutical approaches. He knew there had to be a better way, so he assembled a team of young, talented engineers to join him in inventing a solution.
Our parent company, Sleep Shepherd, LLC was made official in 2014 with one simple goal: provide a drug free alternative to help individuals improve their sleep. Since then, we have developed an array of device-based solutions aimed at helping individuals improve their sleep and reduce stress without the use of harmful chemicals. All of our products were first launched through crowdfunding and have gone on to find commercial success (now available through Amazon, Best Buy, HSN, Sharper Image, Brookstone, Touch of Modern, and The Grommet). All told, we have completed 3 projects on Kickstarter/Indiegogo (raising nearly $1 million dollars) and have delivered all of our perks on time to over 5,000 backers.
While product design is never without pitfalls and hurdles, we will do everything in our power to stick to the timeline below. If for any reason we do need to deviate from this timeline, we will keep all our backers in the loop.

Turning on your SomniCloud
When you're ready to go to bed, the SomniCloud couldn't be easier to use. There are three main ways to turn on your SomniCloud:
Option 1: Auto-on
The SomniCloud's cloud's auto-on feature is the easiest way to activate your SomniCloud. Simply set your typical bed time window in the app and the SomniCloud will automatically detect when you get into bed.
Option 2: Start with the App
If your bed time tends to vary drastically, it may be more convenient to simply start your SomniCloud with the app. Hit 'Start Sleep' on the app and the SomniCloud will take care of the rest.
Option 3: Use Alexa
Don't want to keep your phone in the bedroom? No problem. Just tell any Amazon Echo device that you are headed to bed and the SomniCloud will start automatically.
Syncing your Data
When you wake up in the morning, the SomniCloud will shut off the Smart Alarm and automatically sync your data. You can do this one of two ways:

It's no secret that sound type, level, and frequency can have a huge impact on our sleep. From your neighbor's dog to the train horn miles away, we all have experienced the negative effect sounds can have on our quality of sleep. When designing the SomniCloud, we scoured through scientific journals, research forums, textbook theories, and experimental data to find the best way to use auditory inputs to actually improve sleep quality. The results of this research produced the proprietary auditory mixes that comprise our individual Sleepscapes.
The SomniCloud is comprised of two, connected sound and light emitting pods. This stereo audio source allows the SomniCloud to produce a fully immersive audio experience. Having two distinct sound sources opens up our technology to provide stereo-dependent audio tracks such as binaural beats, Tibetan singing bowls, and pink noise.
Audio stimuli presented from dual sound sources activates different parts of the brain and is crucial in the quest to help a user relax and fall asleep. Binaural beats, in particular, have been scientifically proven to help entrain brainwaves to a slower sleep state - providing decreased sleep latency and general improvement to sleep cycle patterns.
To better illustrate this point, we tested our tones in a functional MRI machine to show the drastic effect the SomniCloud's dual sound source approach has on brain activity.
First, we played monaural tones (a non-stereo audio input). We then looked at how the subject's brain responded to the stimulus:
Using this as a control study, we then administered binaural beats through specially designed headphones.
When exposed to stereo-dependent binaural beats, our researchers found an increase in activity in the bilateral dorsal medial thalamus, the middle and anterior cingulate, the right hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus, as well as part of the brain stem and bilateral superior frontal gyrus.
As you can see from the images above, binaural beats are more than just music. They interact with our brain in a very unique way, and, when applied properly, can even entrain brainwaves to a desired frequency. Our specialized binaural beat sequences are biofeedback-driven and provide your brain with a natural guide wire to sleep.
Our Sleepscape library also includes pink noise and Tibetan singing bowl simulations - sound phenomenons that are best experienced using immersive sound from two audio sources. To experience any of these Soundscapes, all you have to do is select one in our companion app. The SomniCloud will take care of the rest.
By now we have all come across an article, news story or blog post detailing the effect that blue wavelength light can have on our melatonin levels (and, consequently, our sleep patterns). It seems the media has finally caught up to what scientists have known for a long time: the quantity and type of light we are exposed to before we go to bed can have a major impact on our sleep.
However, this problem is much larger than just avoiding a phone screen before bed. With a home full of light-emitting screens and artificial light sources, it is becoming harder and harder for our eyes to recognize the natural environmental cues that signal to our brain it is time to go to sleep.
The SomniCloud system helps address this problem by administering the proper wavelength of light as you fall alseep. By immersing yourself in long wavelength light prior to sleep, your brain receives a natural cue that is time to rest. This leads to an increase in melatonin production, a chemical that leads to a drowsy feeling and helps keep our sleep cycles consistent over time.
Once you are asleep, the SomniCloud shuts off all light to provide the natural blackout conditions your body was meant to sleep in. We suggest removing all other light sources (alarms, powered on screens, video monitors, etc) from your sleep environment to maximize results.

Sleep scientists have known for a long time that a sleep environment of 60-65 degrees is ideal for a healthy sleep cycle. The drawback of course, is the inconvenience of waking up to a cold room. The SomniCloud fixes this dilemma by automatically setting your Nest and Ecobee thermostats to the perfect temperature when you are ready for bed.
In the morning, we will gradually raise the temperature prior to your pre-set wake time. This variable temperature profile has shown to lead to a decrease in sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), an increase in deep sleep levels, and an overall improvement in a subjective measurement of restfulness.

We are hoping the SomniCloud will become our fourth successfully funded crowdfunding project. Through our previous 3 campaigns, we have gained valuable experience in managing timelines, production schedules and backer satisfaction. All three of our previous campaigns have delivered on time and gone on to achieve commercial success with our current retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Sharper Image, Brookstone, HSN, Touch of Modern, and The Grommet.
With that being said, product innovation and development is never easy. There are always hurdles. From mold retooling to factory shut downs to customs hold ups, we have seen just about everything. We cannot promise that this project will be without hick-ups. In fact, we can almost guarantee the opposite.
What we can guarantee is this: we will provide all of our backers with behind the scenes access to the whole process and maintain open and transparent communication.Thanks to a wealth of experience and detailed project planning, we have never had to adjust a delivery timeline of any product launch or delivery. In the unlikely event that a timeline does need to be adjusted, we will be sure that all our backers are the first to know.
