The core to Choice Playing Cards is about delivering 52+ pieces of art in a way that insist that you use them and not sit them on your shelf. I want you to take out your standard cards and compare them with the Choice Deck and be able to identify my inspiration for each design. I also wanted to give a nod to all the decks and history behind cards. At their beginning playing cards were made by hand, meaning only the privileged could afford them. I want to hand you a deck with just this in mind. Giving you the missing link between modern and historic. I often find the older more decorative the deck (anything for that matter), the less I will actually use it. I feel I am not alone on this thought and with that, the designs took on a simple form and feel, to give it that edge towards the table and into the game.
If successful I will print my second deck in color and with the same back. A series of cards that can be mixed, deck with deck, thus giving you a choice.
My first idea was to use a computer for all the final artwork. After spending a month doing this, I stepped back and deleted all the files. I knew I could take it to another level and this led me to hand ink the artwork. As well, the deck was to be black and white, however after talking with several working Magicians I realized this would hinder their ability for actual use with an audience or even in a card game. The hearts and diamonds use minimal red ink to give them this prowess.
About a year has gone by since the first thought popped in my head and now here I stand ready to deliver what I think will inspire you to go play. I hope that this helps you find its path every now and again.
I discovered three very important individuals that I contacted along my journey. The first of which is, David Salinas, the font artist for "Playing Cards" on the tuck box. After seeing his work, I knew it embodied everything that I want Choice Cards to be and I immediately contacted him to commission his talent. Other than David's font work, I have designed and illustrated all art involved in the making of this custom deck.
The second person is Ryan Edwards with his amazing work on the famous Jamie D. Grant Playing Card Vaults and Joe Porper Playing Card Clips known throughout the magic society. If you haven't seen Ryan's website yet, here it is at rehandcrafted. He did amazing work for me already, giving me the chance to show everyone what the clips will look like first thing with the black prototypes pictured.
Last but not least on the contact list was the legendary Jamie D. Grant and his gorgeous "Anything is Possible Bottles" and Playing Card Vaults. Check out his work at Sendwonder. After having several great conversations with Jamie I decided to thank both him and Ryan for all their help and hard work to come. I have customized two cards within the deck to their likeness; the Jamie of Hearts and the Ryan of Diamonds.
Add-on guide: US Backers add Price to final pledge. International Backers add Price + International shipping rates to final pledge. At the end of the Campaign a survey will be sent out allowing you to specify what your extra dollar amount is going towards.
If funded, I am relying on the USPCC to do the final sheet layout used in their printing process to ensure that all borders and art is in perfect alignment. The final quantity of decks printed will be announced shortly after the campaign has ended. This fully custom deck will be printed on Bee Casino Stock with a Linen Finish and Includes Free Shipping within U.S., but if you are going to dream, dream big.
The Stretch Goals are as follows if we can hit $20,000!
- Linen finish on the tuck box
- Custom deck seals with 1st edition marking
- Custom clover stickers with all shipping orders
- Custom certificates for all signed and numbered goods
For all of their help and support, I want to thank my family, David Salinas, Ryan Edwards, Jamie D.Grant and Charlie Zerah as well as you. None of this would have been possible without anyone of those people, especially you.

Risks and challenges
With everything in life there come risks and mine is final production. Without your help I would have never given this project a second thought due to the funding needed. I built my campaign after researching many successful Kickstarter campaigns as well as the playing card communities likes and dislikes. I have invested some of my own savings and time in order to keep me ahead of the entire process as well as build a schedule and plan for all productions. This includes the cards themselves under the United States Playing Card Company.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
