About

Launder is a solo money-laundering game that tasks the player with managing resources and transforming a small amount of illegally obtained money into a larger amount of legitimate money through the purchase of legitimate businesses and the hiring of semi-trustworthy business associates.

Over the course of twelve months/turns, the player will have to deal with a series of unexpected events, avoid the attention of local authorities and the FBI (represented by Heat and the FBI Track), and strike the right balance between investing their money in purchasing new businesses and hoarding enough money to meet their Boss's quota.

There are two types of cards in Launder: Assets and Events.

Assets represent the businesses and people the player can purchase and hire to help launder their illicit funds. Some particularly seedy Assets are marked with the Vice Icon, indicating that they are Vice Assets. While Vice Assets have no inherent game effects on their own, a number of other cards in the game interact with Vice Assets in unique ways.

Both types of Assets have the same basic layout:

Event cards, meanwhile, are similarly divided into two different subtypes: Immediate Events, which resolve as soon as they are drawn and are then discarded, and Lingering Events, which remain in play and influence various aspects of the game.

Gameplay in Launder is divided into 5 Phases:

1. Start Phase: The player advances the Month by one space. If the Month cannot advance in this way (i.e., the player is attempting to advance the Month from the December space off the edge of the board), then the player has run out of time and the game ends in a loss.

After advancing the Month, the player then Refreshes all Activated Assets by straightening their cards. This Phase is skipped on the first Month of the game.

2. Event Phase: The player draws the top card of the Event Deck. If the Event is an Immediate Event, its effects are immediately resolved and it is discarded. If the Event is a Lingering Event, it is instead placed into play at the top of the board, and its effects remain in play until it is discarded.

3. FBI Phase: The player discards any Assets with five or more Heat. For each Asset that is discarded in this way, the FBI Track is advanced one space to the right.

Next, the player resolves the current space of the FBI Track. This typically adds Heat to one or more of the player's most expensive Assets, but if the player draws too much attention from the FBI, they have gathered enough evidence to arrest the player, ending the game in failure.

4. Action Phase: During the Action Phase, the player may choose one of their Unactivated Assets and resolve one of the Abilities printed on its card. Often this will result in the player rolling one or more Income Dice and gaining the indicated results, but some Assets might allow the player to manipulate the Event Deck, remove Heat, or gain Influence.

Influence is tracked by a marker on the game board and can be spent at any time for a variety of effects, such as rerolling Income Dice, generating Dirty Money, discarding Lingering Events, or even lowering the FBI Track.

The Income Dice are the most common way for the player to generate Clean Money in the game, though there are plenty of Assets that allow the player to earn money in other ways.

Once the player finished resolving the Asset's Ability, the Asset becomes Activated and is turned sideways to indicate that it cannot be Activated again this turn (unless, of course, the player has some way to refresh the Asset).

The player may then choose to either Activate another Asset.

Any Assets that are Unactivated at the end of the Action Phase benefit from a month of "business as usual" (or the appearance of such) and lose one of their accumulated Heat (if any).

5. Purchase Phase: The player may purchase one, both, or neither of the cards in the Asset Reserve by discarding a combination of Dirty and Clean Money equal to the Asset's Cost. Once purchased, the Asset is moved to the play area, ready to be used in the following Month.

At the end of the Month, the player checks their Clean Money Reserve. If they have accumulated a total of fifteen Clean Money (or twenty Clean Money in Hard Mode), they deliver their laundered money to their Boss and win the game.

If the player doesn't have the required funds, they begin a new Month.

We are partnering with Fulfillrite to ensure that everyone receives their copies of Launder as quickly and affordably as possible.

Risks and challenges

This is our second Kickstarter project. Our first project, Lockwood's Asylum, was successfully delivered only one month after our projected delivery date (due to an overly long wait on customs).

We have a few years of industry experience and know how to put a game together. With the exception of the "design your own boss" reward tiers, the game is finished and ready to be sent to manufacturing. We are using the same manufacturer as we used on our previous project, so we are not expecting any surprises.

As with our previous campaign, we've chosen to be somewhat conservative with our stretch goals. This should allow us to fulfill all of our goals in a timely manner without becoming overwhelmed with too many unrealistic promises or with sudden spikes in the cost of importing the game from China.

As with any sort of manufacturing, however, there are all sorts of unexpected obstacles that could crop up and cause delays. No matter what happens, however, we are committed to keeping the lines of communication open and ensuring that our backers are kept up to date on all steps of the manufacturing and shipping process.
