4 Player Game Example (Prototype components)
4 Player Game Example (Prototype components)

Tavarua is a competitive surfing board game for 1 to 6 players. You are a surfer, ready to ride the waves in a friendly competition to see who’s the best!

Choose a surfboard, paddle out and watch for the perfect wave to catch! Once you’re up and riding you’ll need to maintain your balance by performing tricks and watching the shifting water to keep from wiping out!

Each successful wave counts towards your score, but in the end, only one surfer will win the grand champion trophy!

Dynamic Wave Break

Dynamic Wave Break

Tavarua features a dynamic wave break, with waves advancing toward shore each round. You have to adapt to the advancing waves, competing against fellow players to catch them!

Keep Your Balance

Balance Mechanic
Balance Mechanic

When riding a wave, you play cards that represent tricks to score points - these tricks shift your balance on your surfboard. However, the cards in the wave deck will also shift your balance. You’ll need to look ahead at the upcoming wave section, then decide how risky or safe to play!

Simultaneous Play

Simultaneous Play

Tavarua is a simultaneous play game. All players choose actions at the same time, then resolve them - this greatly reduces down-time making the game move much more quickly than traditional turns!

The artwork and graphics on this page are not final. I've hired some incredibly talented artists to bring Tavarua's visuals to the next level.

John Ariosa: ("Mice and Mystics", "Summoner Wars", "Tail Feathers" etc.) Is providing card illustrations, as well as the cover art! You can see more of his incredible art here: www.johnariosa.com

PARTICIPATION! Work with me to finish the game! Your feedback will help shape the final product of Tavarua!

SPEED! You'll get your copy of Tavarua before any other distribution channels!

NEED! I have put everything I've got into Tavarua, invested my own money, I've paid for all the design, artwork and development, but I can't manufacture the game without your help!

COMMUNICATION! Guaranteed Weekly Updates!

RECOGNITION! Your name will be on the game box of every copy of Tavarua! (If you want).

We have distribution warehouses in: US, Canada, EU, Australia, and China.

We're shipping the games by using the Stonemaier Method - shipping games to fulfillment warehouses around the world to pay customs fees & VAT for you - and to make shipping prices as low as possible! We've already done this successfully with our first project Xia: Legends of a Drift System - shipping 3000+ games to backers around the world.

Two Types of Stretch Goals: Stretch goals are a fun idea, but I think they can be done better, so I’ve re-imagined how they work for this campaign! There are two types of goals - Stretch Goals and Activity Goals:

  • Stretch Goals: Instead of me picking where the extra money goes, I want to put the power in your hands: Any funds over our initial funding will be considered “Stretch Money” - as we earn Stretch Money you will be able to vote on which Stretch Goals you'd like to spend it on!
  • Activity Goals: Throughout the campaign I will reveal Activity Goals, something that doesn’t cost you any money, but if you participate you can unlock Activity Goals for the campaign!

I know this is a little different than most campaigns - so I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Summary

You are a surfer, ready to ride the waves in a friendly competition to see who’s the best surfer on the waves!

Rounds Overview

The game is played over a number of short rounds. Each round is comprised of three phases. Each phase is simultaneously carried out by all players; there are no individual turns. Once a phase has been completed by all players, the next phase begins. At the end of the last phase, a new round begins. Rounds continue until there are no more cards in the wave deck, at which point the game ends and one player claims victory. Here is an overview of each round:

1. Advance / Play

The waves move towards the shore, and players draw up to their maximum hand size. Players choose actions by playing cards face down next to their mat.

2. Resolve

Players reveal and resolve their chosen actions.

3. Wave / Score

The top card on the wave deck is placed face up on the discard pile and all players riding a wave shift their balance accordingly. Any players who completed a wave now score it. If any cards remain in the wave deck, the First Player token is passed to the left, and another round begins.

If no cards remain, the game ends and a winner is determined!

My name is Cody Miller.

I’m an IT major, husband to an incredible wife, father of three beautiful children, and an avid gamer! Far Off Games is me - there's no big company, no marketing manager, I do it all! :)

I've already put everything I've got into Tavarua - but manufacturing a board game is incredibly expensive! I need your backing to make Tavarua a reality!

Since my first game XIA’s release I've been thinking how awesome it would be to turn Far Off Games into something I could do full time for the foreseeable future.

To that end I've been working hard on a few new games, Tavarua is the first of these to be ready for publishing! Supporting me on Kickstarter is more than a "pre-order" for a game, it’s making my dream of becoming a full time game designer a reality.

If we’re successful, I’ll be putting everything I’ve got into not only making Tavarua the best game I possibly can, but also making Far Off Games a thriving company. Thank you for your support! :)

Cheers, -Cody

Risks and challenges

Tavarua is my second Kickstarter project. My first project Xia raised over $300,000 and I successfully shipped over 3000 games to backers all over the world. Tavarua is a much simpler game than Xia, and I am confident that everything I've learned from my first project will make Tavarua an even more streamlined process.

Since Tavarua is a physical tabletop board game, which means it has to be manufactured, then shipped to you! The primary risks involved are:

-Manufacturing Delays: I have worked with our manufacturing company PandaGM on my previous project. They are a well known and reputable manufacturer. I will work with PandaGM to minimize manufacturing delays, which are often caused by incorrect file preparation for printing, or coloration issues. Since this is my second project I am confident we will overcome any unforeseen manufacturing issues with minimal delays.

-Manufacturing Defects: Panda GM has a 99% guaranteed defect free rate for their products. However, they also account for the 1% of defects by sending me replacement parts. Should you have any issues with your copy, simply let me know and I'll get you replacement parts as soon as possible!

-Shipping Delays: There is always the possibility of shipping delays - I hope to minimize these by having a solid logistics plan in place. I am working with localized distribution centers to have games to you as quickly as possible.

-Shipping Losses: Should your game be damaged or lost in transit, I will replace it or any broken parts at no cost to you!
