About this project
Please help us open this food store in Manitou Springs.
We will provide the much needed service of supplying essential food and non-food items. We will be an asset economically by making sure food dollars stay here by supporting and sourcing from local producers. We will improve the health and well-being of the community, encourage community interconnectedness, and restore the bond between farmer/food producer and consumer!
Manitou’s 2 main streets are made up of businesses that cater primarily to tourists
37 gift shops | 11 clothing stores | 10 restaurants | 8 galleries | 4 coffee shops | 4 bars | 2 hotels/B&Bs | A convenience store, wine shop, liquor store and a few others… Manitou needs a grocery store!
Please know that kickstarter is all or nothing!
If we do not reach our funding goal please know that your credit card will not be charged and you will not receive any rewards. This will also mean that we might possibly have to delay opening the doors while we try to secure more funding. So please help us spread the word about this Kickstarter Project and make a donation if possible. We have some great rewards for those able to contribute!

You are needed!
We (all of us) know that WE need a grocery store. One that is focused on increasing access and awareness of healthy fresh food for all! Thus we need your help in putting the Local First into Manitou Springs, Colorado.
We've been working hard trying to acquire the funding we need to meet the need of Manitou having a grocer. We are now asking you, our neighbors and future customers, to give us a hand in building a store we can all use and all need.
The money we raise on Kickstarter will be used for electrical work, start-up inventory, utilities, shelving, equipment, and wages for our employees.
How the co-op will work?
The Local First Grocer will be open to anyone! Members will have access to special co-op prices and have input on what we carry in the store! One thing that sets us apart from other co-ops nation wide is that we are a member-run cooperative, meaning that we offer working memberships that require members to volunteer in the store to help lower the operating costs. This is a way to connect members of the community which will help build a stronger community!
Imagine a 17 year old student from Manitou High School volunteering with a 60 year old long time Manitou resident. Imagine that same 17 year old student picking up lettuce and other fresh produce grown in Manitou and delivering it to an 80 year old resident that is homebound. WE can strengthen the bonds of the locals in our community with your help!!!
so....Why will you shop here? What makes the Local First Grocer Coop better?
We will be;
(1) Priced competitively thanks to memberships, investors and volunteers
(2) Local products will take precedence over profits
(3) Focused on education
(4) Help to develop food sovereignty
(5) Reducing Reusing Recycling
(6) Supportive of “cottage food” products
(7) Catalyst for an active community
(8) Providing a better product, meaning less confusion
We want to take the distress out of grocery shopping.
At the Local First Grocer, only products that are grown, produced or manufactured, sustainably, ethically and without chemicals or pesticides, will be offered in the store. If a product can be obtained locally, and it is sustainable, ethical and chemical and pesticide free, it will be in this store.

Interesting Fact about The Local First Grocer's Home @ 116 Canon Ave.
“The St. Andrew’s Mission was formally organized in 1877, and in that same year, William Bell donated a lot in the center of Manitou Springs for the erection of the Episcopal church. Fundraising for the building began immediately, though by 1880, the congregants had raised only enough money for the erection of a temporary wooden structure on the site donated by Bell.
To allow for the construction of a permanent stone church, in 1884 the original wooden church building was relocated across Canon Avenue, where it stands today.”<---that's the Local First Grocer's Building! (Taken from http://www.saintandrewsmanitousprings.org/st-andrews-church-history)
From Manitou’s Church to Manitou’s only Grocery Store. This building is the perfect fit for the Local First Grocer since we are rooted in the community and focused on the health and well being of our neighbors!

Risks and challenges
Manitou Springs doesn't have a grocery store, so bringing fresh food to our town will meet this need. But we know that our residents are in the habit of driving out of town to large chain supermarkets like Safeway & King Soopers. They have been made to believe that buying cheap food is healthy for the economy. This is not true. Our farmers and producers deserve a living wage and the value of good food should be reflected in the price. With this in mind, we have designed the business model to be patient, taking in only a small market share for the first 2 years. We will have to keep our prices low (at or below Safeway's prices) in order to gain initial customer loyalty. This is going to be very challenging but we have factored this into the model by obtaining equity to offset our low margins through these first 2 years. We hope with education and harnessing the power of community with this co-op model, we will succeed in breaking the corporate food chain addiction.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
