About this project
East Oaks Studio in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a new and innovative art enterprise established by Louis Carr, Michael Klein and Joshua LaRock - contemporary realist painters whose central mission is to steward beauty and pursue masterful art. The purpose of our Kickstarter Project is to launch the video production component of the studio, delivering content from us and our contemporaries which establishes a new standard in the industry.
With our unique spectrum of skills, we will offer a diverse range of comprehensive techniques, from still life and plein air, to portraits and complex narratives. Later in the series, as an experienced entrepreneur, Carr will also provide business-oriented tutorials focused on challenging aspects of becoming a professional painter. In these lessons, he will help you develop a business strategy that increases your opportunity to paint more and manage less, how to build a strong client base and how to create a successful painting business.
After this Kickstarter campaign, all video content will be available to purchase or view from our East Oaks Studio website. Below you will find three previews of our first series and listed on the right side of this page are the rewards you can receive if you choose to invest in our mission. As a special note, these rewards include great discounts on the first three instructional videos, only available before our campaign ends - the best value is to purchase all three together!
The funds raised by this Kickstarter Project will contribute to the production of an additional series of instructional videos for purchase as well as a ton of great content which we will make available for free! The primary goal for these new resources will be to hire our film maker, Joe Hawkins, to bring the entire vision to life. In this second series, we will discuss many more aspects of art, not just the important technical side, but also valuable insights into ideas like poetry, philosophy, and art criticism.
As well as the option to invest in this Kickstarter Project by receiving our first three tutorials and their corresponding prints, we are also offering three day in-person workshops with each artist. All funds from these workshops will go toward the Kickstarter Project so please find more information below. Note: Places in these workshops are limited.
And even more, we are offering a unique opportunity for personal critiques as a package with the videos!
Our core desire is to provide exemplary skills and guidance to a global society of artists and invite you into our studio - join us on the journey to steward beauty and pursue masterful art! Every dollar donated to this Kickstarter Project will help make this a reality and allow East Oaks Studio to nourish a thriving community of artists worldwide.
Essentials of Plein Air Seascape Painting with Louis Carr
Every moment in nature is changing and can be quite difficult to capture. Join Louis as he shares the building blocks of seascape plein air painting techniques to capture essential information in a three hour study. He will go over decision making for composition, color, and mood as the variables of nature continue to progress through the day.
Many of the great landscape painters of the past would spend hours in nature acquiring information through quick studies as reference for larger studio projects. Louis will take you through similar steps, pushing time constraints and gathering as much information as possible to create a beautiful sketch.
The 88 minute video will include:
- Establishing the composition
- Working from background to foreground
- Using perspective to create distance in nature
- The anatomy of waves and clouds
- Saving details for the end and directing the eye
Flower Painting Insights with Michael Klein
Michael has established himself as a leading figure in contemporary floral painting. His paintings evoke a sensibility akin to the turn of the century in the early 1900’s where two worlds were colliding. Academic art meeting with the impressionists, this period of art was the most influential on Michael while developing his masterful technique. Klein demonstrates his insights during a video recorded over a three day period packed into a solid hour of insight. All of the essentials to his technique are revealed in this highly anticipated instructional video.
This instructional video demonstrates the building blocks of working optically at the outset of the painting to the conceiving of final brushstrokes, through feeling the form conceptually as opposed to attempting to copy value adjustments.
The 75 minute video will include:
- The block-in
- Building texture through understanding brushwork
- The glazing and finishing refinements to form and drawing
The Layers of Portrait Painting with Joshua LaRock
Look over Joshua’s shoulder as he guides you through the many levels of considerations and layers of paint in the making of this award winning portrait. Painting a likeness can often be a daunting task but Joshua holds nothing back as he presents his clear and logical approach, providing crucial ideas and problem-solving tools that all skill levels will find helpful.
This video will center around the elements of form and how to achieve the illusion of three-dimensions. By better understanding the importance of form you will gain new insight into value, color, drawing and expression.
Joshua demonstrates his indirect oil painting technique, which is distinct from the alla-prima, or wet-in-wet, method in that it is done in layers and can therefore achieve wonderful and subtle effects by the use of semi-transparent veils of paint.
The 3 and a half hours of content will include:
- The preparatory drawing in graphite
- Transfer of the drawing to canvas
- Layer One: Initial underpainting considering color theory
- Layer Two: Building up the form in the second day of painting - lighter lights and darker darks.
- Layer Three: Finishing and polishing using glazes and scumbling.

WHO WE ARE
Louis Carr - Founder
Louis Carr is a highly successful portrait artist originally from the small town of Clarksdale, Mississippi. He decided art would become his life's pursuit in larger part due to the mentorship he received at a young age from Marshall Bouldin (a renowned southern portrait artist). This inspired Carr to start his portrait career at the age of 13 and by the time he was 20 he began painting full time as a professional. In his constant pursuit to develop his skill, Louis furthered his education with a Fine Arts degree from the University of Mississippi and then moved to New York to study at the Grand Central Atelier. Today, Louis is a sought after portraitist receiving commissions throughout the country.
Michael Klein - Founder
Michael Klein is an award winning artist whose accolades include the 2016 Draper Grand Prize at the Portrait Society of America, as well as First Place in the Grand Central Academy Still Life Competition. His core passion is to depict an accurate representation of our human experience. By poetically blending paints and canvas, he recreates the visible world around us and injects his personal spirit into each piece. From many years training in the classical tradition under well known artists, such as Jacob Collins and Michael Grimaldi, Klein has emphasized that working from life is an important part of the process, as is clearly seen in his delicate floral paintings.
Joshua LaRock - Founder
Joshua LaRock is internationally recognized as a preeminent figurative artists. After receiving a baccalaureate degree in Music Business, LaRock found himself compelled to explore a completely different vocation as an artist in the realm of painting. He attended the Grand Central Academy of Art in New York City and later formed an essential part of their teaching program, dedicating seven years as a core instructor. LaRock's exquisite paintings are an ode to the past while being filtered through a contemporary life - his point of reference. This makes his emotive figure compositions memorable and potent and gives his narrative pieces an eerily present feeling. Even when referencing Bouguereau or one of the great compositions of the past, LaRock imbues a shade of the timeless, drawing the viewer deeper into his personal interpretation of how the world ought to be.
Joe Hawkins - Producer
Joe Hawkins is a British filmmaker and camera operator who has recently relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife. Joe originally trained as a camera assistant with the BBC on several television productions. He later set up his own freelance film business, working with British companies such as the digital design company Bulb Studios, as well as Jaguar Land Rover and Waitrose. Before leaving Britain to travel across the pond, Joe filmed, edited and directed a documentary about the Battle of Britain for the RAF Fighters Association, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This film has been released in six museums across Britain and has been accepted by the British Film Institute.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING
“I have been aware of the work that the East Oaks Artists have done over the years now, and from the get-go I was completely taken by the beauty and quality of their work. I did not know them personally at the beginning but paid attention and saw that they were producing some of the best work that was being done by artists today. Fortunately for me, I was able to get to know all of them on a personal level and found that the quality of their workmanship and their artistry was equalled by the quality of their personalities and integrity as human beings.”
-Tim Newton Chairman of the Board, The Salmagundi Club
“You have very successfully communicated your emotion and feelings. In the case of the painting I bought of your wife (Laura In Black), she is beautiful and you have totally captured it in the painting.
Artwork is intended to communicate - the single most important aspect of realist painting is that it communicates in a way that is universal, that spoken and written language can not.”
-Fred Ross Chairman and Founder of the Art Renewal Center
Risks and challenges
Our largest challenge has been the editing and post-production of these videos. It is a labor intensive job where a high-quality product demands time and close attention to detail. We are happy to say that the addition of Joe Hawkins to our team to head up video production has greatly accelerated the process and at a much higher level. With Joe's help we are now ready to release our completed first three videos upon the end of our campaign. To guarantee easy and secure video delivery to you, we are excited to power our content with an excellent and innovative company, VimeoVHX.
With this experience and a strong team on-board, our next series is already in pre-production and we anticipate the entire process becoming much more streamlined.
Prints: We have an excellent Los Angeles based printer lined up and ready to go. Our commitment to the highest quality has caused us to choose this company despite its distance from our studio - the need to produce the prints, have them shipped to us to sign, and then sent back to Los Angeles for delivery may result in added time. However, the printing company will handle all order fulfillment (packaging and shipping of the prints) which will expedite the process and ensure safe delivery to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
